Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released) — Page 35

I grabbed it, and quite honestly, it's not a huge step up from the high def 16mm file that's available. The colors are purple-ish and it's in SD resolution.

It's a bit like looking at the GOUT and saying "well compared to what was available before it, I don't see how anyone can complain".  Yeah, it's better than what we had before, but it's not the best that it can and should be.

Wow, that's your attitude towards somebody that has preserved this for you for free? It's not as if Disney sold you this release. It's not your print that you had scanned either.

:)

I'm thinking Darth Lucas was saying that this was no excuse for Disney - they should do the film justice and do a proper preservation. I don't think the bile was directed at anyone on this site... At least, I think...

Disney has preserved it.  I'm aware that they did a digital transfer to keep the film from being lost.  They just have no plans to release it to home video.

Of course that sounds like the sort of thing ripe to be leaked.

Yeah, I know they did a 4k transfer, but I wonder if they're doing any restoration work or if it was just a safety scan...

I meant no disrespect, or to compare said preservation to the GOUT (what an insult that would be), only to make the point that we shouldn't look at any preservation and think 'eh.  good enough.  no need to continue'.  We should always be pushing to improve said projects as a community simply because Disney HASN'T offered to sell us the film in as good quality as it deserves to be.  Again, this isn't to say the 16mm preservation is bad.  Far from it, my friend.  It is absolutely phenomenal and far better than I thought I would see this film in my life.

Are there any plans on taking the 16mm fan release and doing any restoration work (ie color timing, etc)?

If anyone can help me find the '35mm IB' DVD please PM me. Cheers and thank you!

I must say, while beggars can't be choosers and it's true within reason anyone can say anything at anytime, I think it should also be said that those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

To say anything else would be unfair to those involved.

Ok, but there's still plenty of other films to worry about. SOTS now has a very acceptable release, there's no rush to do it in 35mm, at least not ahead of all the other Disney movies that really need the treatment.

I absolutely agree.  No rush at all.  Was just posing an opinion as to the grand scheme of things is all. =P

And if I were to wager my two cents I would say that just about every single Disney film "really needs the treatment".  The "restorations" done by Disney are absolutely atrocious and really get on the nerves of a guy like me who is a huge Disney fan and wants to be able to see all the films the way they were created, not the overly restored, reanimated, DNR'd messes that are being released.  It would be interesting if a team like TN1 was put together but specializing in restoring and preserving Disney films.  Prioritizing which films need it most and going to work to make it so these incredibly important films are not lost in time forever. :P  Not that I would do it, simply because I do not have the time, hardware or patience, personally.  But it's a nice "what if" situation to think about.

FWIW: We have a few Disney 35mm scan projects going on over at AMPS.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Does anyone know if the 35mm IB print mentioned earlier is still available.  I might be interested in trying to work something out to get the print and get it scanned.

Think I've found 8 repeat frames in 1080p.wmv

First clue was 180 frames between cue marks, instead of 172.
Became curious, so I took a closer look.
Next clue was seeing twice the same bubble on bull's neck (49595 & 49603).

Here's AviSynth code to illustrate:

c16mm = ffVideoSource("Song of the South 16mm 1080p.wmv")\
.crop(240,0,-240,0).spline16Resize(720,540)\
.showFrameNumber(scroll=true)

return merge(trim(c16mm,49585,49600), invert(trim(c16mm,49593,49608)))

Maybe my decoder is buggy?

------ edit -------

More info for anybody who might like to try this at home:
If the first frame is called "00000",
cue marks appear at 49422-49425 then again 49606-609.
Do the math, that's 180 clear frames between the two cues.
Frames 49597-49604 look to be repeats of 49589-596 respectively.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

My 2 cents?  You didn't miss anything with the 35mm disc, which was not 1080p, only SD.  I was lucky enough to snag it.  Overall, I liked the picture quality, but there were too many splices where frames were missing.  One in particular lasted a good few seconds (when Br'er Rabbit is being held over the briar patch).  The 16mm 1080p WMV, which is still out there, does not suffer these splices and is much preferable.

Yeah but the thing is where and how to get that 16mm version :(

651 frames, more than 27sec!

There is AviSynth script which return 16/35mm side-by-side, sync'ed.
In case anybody wonder why I insert those 9 blank frames at the start of 3rd reel,
just stay tuned until I post IVTC script for the Japanese LDs which are on 'spleen ...
