Hi, Fullframe!

I'm AntcuFaalb (Anthony). I currently live in Columbia, MD (USA).

The member with the 4K 35mm scanner, poita, lives in Australia.

I assume you meant New Jersey by Jersey? I grew up in Howell and Freehold, NJ.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Hi Fullframe!

I sent you an email, but I'll post here, too. :)

I'm ww12345 (William) and I'm in So. Cal.

I understand your hesitation with loaning out any prints - I'm the same way! That said, I would trust Poita to work with prints that even I am nervous handling! He's transferring a fair amount of high value prints for me right now, and I trust him completely - a truly stand-up guy. Maybe we could work something out behind the scenes for you to let us borrow the print with some kind of deposit or something. Heck, if you wanted, you could give me a ring (or vice versa) and we could hash out details over the phone.

Anyway, I'm sure all here are glad to have you here. I'll be sending you some links of what we have so far, so we'll be in touch.

Hello Mr. Frame,

I guess you already know me a bit from the emails and Davespeanuts (on Ebay).  My Earth name is Christopher Seay, and I am located in Louisville, KY.  I believe I've been on OT.com for @ 4 to 5 years, ever since learning of Adyway's A NEW HOPE:: REVISITED, which led me here.

You can check out my Ebay profile under "norman.bates", as I've been a member there since April 1999 (with a 100% feedback score).  I go by Monroville on quite a few other forums, such as blu-ray.com, tehparadox.com, x264-bb.com, asiatorrents and myspleen.  I go by Monstro over on Cinemageddon.

Once again I would like to thank you for taking the time to register and visit the thread.  Any help would be appreciated, as the frame captures on Davespeanuts' ad for the 35mm looked fantastic!

Also per my email, feel free to peruse the site, especially Dark Jedi and Team Blu's output.

Also, if you need any invites to Cinemageddon or MySpleen (where a lot of Dark Jedi's custom blus are located for download from a private and protected server), feel free to PM me, as I have some to spare.

WOW!!! I'm fairly new on these forums and have been looking at all the projects and this one caught my eye because I have been a huge fan of this movie since the first time a saw it when it was a PAL VHS to NTSC conversion that a friend of mine duped and gave me. This was back in the 90s and I think it's awful that Disney won't give this a proper release. All of you on here that have put in so much work into this project are awesome for taking this preservation upon yourselves. Amazing how people from all over the planet can unite to get something done. Kudos! Patiently waiting to see what results you end up with in the final stage. Looks very promising from what I've seen in these 32 pages (took me almost 4 hours to read it all LOL)

Was wondering something about the coloring and am wondering if any of you have an answer ( I do some editing but what you guys are doing here is a little above my expertise ) So I downloaded the Br'er Preservation Edition and noticed that in certain live action scenes the color switched tint from too green to too blue between certain frames in the same scene. Now the question that I have is whether this is cause by fault encoding, fault editing (as in plugin settings) faulty source (BBC aired) or is the original source (as in the 16mm or 35mm transfers) faulty in this way too?

If necessary, I can do some screen caps to illustrate what I mean.

Anyway, thanx for all the hard work and look forward to seeing all the development on this project (on side note, if anyone needs help with any sound restoration, I do a lot of sound re-mastering as a hobby for 12 years now)

Peace,

Jerry Shadoe

Ok so when watching this br'er edition, it appeared as if the tint was "flickering" from warm to cold to warm to cold etc...
I demuxed the video track from the dvd and opened it in avidemux. The source video on this edition is at 23.976fps and that's what I will be basing the frame numbers by. I realized that the "flickering" effect is a trick that the eyes play when watching a video, in the fact that the differences are usually not from one frame to the next, but gradual and take about 8-10 frames to notice, so when I started skipping a few frames ahead at a time, the differences became extremely noticeable. Here is a breakdown of 20 different frames and differences. Trust me - when you look at like this, they become very apparent.

frame 5119: colors appear to be "balanced"

frame 5134: just a few frames later it looks to have a blue tint (especially noticeable in the mans face) wondering if that has to do with the way the background was processed in during filter stage

frame 5162: colors, as well as blacks/white appear "ok"

frame 5174: now the image is a little more vibrant but appears to be slightly too bright

frame 5189: appears to go back to the way frame 5162 was

frame 5416: overall the whole image looks like there is too much magenta

frame 5431: image appears to be more vibrant, look at how rich the yellow is in the head piece compare to frame 5416

frame 5662: frame looks "warm" and his face looks "ok"

frame 5671: frame looks "cool" where you can see his face has a hint of blue to it

frame 7254: the whole frame appears "warm" pay close attention to the pink tones in the little black boys shirt and white boys warm color face

frame 7267: the whole frame appears "cool" look at how much of the rose is gone in little black boys shirt and white boys face appears cool now, as if the whole image has a blue tint to it and the blue outfit in middle sticks out more

frame 7281: now it appears even cooler, with even more blue tint to whole image

frame 7295: going back towards what frame 7267 was

frame 7309: appears to go back to the "warm" look it had in frame 7254

frame 7848: look at the "white" door and frame which appears to be a purple/blue tint

frame 7863: now the door actually appears to be a "white" (not true but much closer)

the next four frames pay close attention to how the "purple" hat changes from warm reddish purple, to plain purple, to bluish purple, back to warm purple

frame 8557: initial "warm"

frame 8572: kinda plain purple now

frame 8585: her hat now appears a blueish purple and it noticeable in his face too, also the door in background appears a blueish white

frame 8599: back to a warm color, similar to 8557, where the door in background is darker and appears more orange/brown

there are so many more examples of this throughout the whole movie that these 20 from first 6 minutes of movie should be enough to demonstrate my point. I have to mention that I noticed this ONLY in live action sequences, NONE of the animated or animated/live action (mixed) sequences suffer from this issue. Hope I didn't go overboard LOL - Peace, Jerry Shadoe

Keep in mind that Mr. (Full) Frame has both a 35mm print and a 16mm print to work with.  Granted, maybe we all need to chip in on a Kickstarter to raise the money to at least ship and insure the film negatives to Poita in Australia (since he/she has the "film to digital HD" transfer equipment).

Yeah, I wouldn't be averse to a kick starter. Anyone heard from the contact, though? I sent him a message a few weeks ago or so and haven't heard back...

really excited by this prospect. i actually saw the film as a kid almost 20 years ago projected at a summer resort here in Canada. Never understood why the movie was so taboo...

Any word about the 35mm film from Full Frame?  The last time he posted was late October.

Maybe you could get in contact with him? He seems to trust you... lol

Looks genuine, or at least a very good hoax.

Don't know about a colour reference, but if it's IVTC-able, it would be a good frame reference (compared to the field-blended PAL versions).

I'm just wondering if $400 is worth it, that is a pretty penny and am wondering if I should hold off until the 35mm or 16mm is scanned. that's assuming that project is still alive. and it is only a vhs tape so I don't know

are there any versions out there (aside from possibly this vhs tape) that do not have the field-blended pal conversion problems? because it's my understanding that the japanese ld had some kind of problems and so did the pal vhs tape and the hong kong ld (think that was an unofficial release)

thanx for baring with me on my questions, appreciate it ;)

Those projects are still alive and well, don't worry. :)

I wouldn't think a PAL VHS would be worthwhile.  There are better alternatives and there is no telling if it has blended fields or PAL speedup.

It also appears to have burned in Japanese subtitles.

Is this a hoax: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SUPER-RARE-Walt-Disneys-Song-of-the-South-JAPANESE-VHS-NTSC-Free-Shipping-/120988966852?

if not, would it be a good color reference? considering buying this but still unsure

It is indeed a legitimate release. I worked in a local video store back in the day that actually rented it as well as the Japanese laserdisc.

The labels and cover in the photos do not look like copies and it has the custom clamshell case used with many Disney Japanese VHS releases.

Does anyone know about this one?

Claims to be a rare NTSC VHS screening copy. The quality looks fairly good (considering it's VHS).
