Info & Help Wanted: some movies on laserdiscs that might worth a restoration...

After I finished my latest project, I must admit I had some fun to do it! So, I thought to do some other restorations based on the following facts:

  1. The movie should have a DTS laserdisc edition
  2. The movie should have an italian laserdisc edition
  3. The movie should have problems on DVD or BD (e.g. cropping, color timing, missing frames etc.) so that a preservation could be an interesting option

This is because I LOVE DTS laserdisc soundtracks, and I’d like to do preservations including an italian soundtrack (my native language), but there must be some reasons to do it… if the DVD or BD version has no problems, it’s futile to do a restoration, don’t you think?

The first two points are quite easy, as there are only around 140 DTS titles on laserdisc, and only few of them have the italian laserdisc counterpart - here you are the list (ported directly from another thread of mine):

001) … 12 Monkeys (1995) 43208
 003) … Apollo 13 (1995) 43119
 006) … Babe (1995) 43209
 013) … Casino (1995) 43117 -> The BD is DTS 5.1 but likely a new mix.
 014) … Casper (1995) 43120
 018) … Dante’s Peak (1997) 43364
 020) … Daylight (1996) 43271
 025) … Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993) ID4426MC
 026) … Dragonheart (1996) 43207
 044) … Hard Target (1993) 43276
 050) … In the Name of the Father (1993) ID4484MC
 052) … Jackal, The (1997) ID4424MC
 <span style=“text-decoration: line-through;”>055) …</span> <span style=“text-decoration: line-through;”>****Jurassic Park (1993) 43115</span>
 059) … Liar Liar (1997) 43365
 062) … Lost World, The: Jurassic Park (1997) 43366
 073) … Nutty Professor, The (1996) 43272
 079) … River Wild, The (1994) 43275
 084) … Schindler’s List (1993) 43277
 094) … Stargate: Deluxe Edition (1994) LD 60231-DTS
 096) … Street Fighter (1994) 43368
 097) … Sudden Death (1995) 43210
 101) … Titanic (1997) LV334812-WSDTS
 109) … Waterworld (1995) 43118

TITLES IN BOLD - movies I own, both on DTS and italian laserdisc, so they could be used for a restoration project

<span style=“text-decoration: line-through;”>STRIKEDTHROUGH</span> - projects made

I’ve done Jurassic Park because there was some interest in it, as the laserdisc has less cropped picture, and colors are different from the 3D BD… and the next project will be Lost World: Jurassic Park - because I’d like to do “sagas” (^^,)

I started this thread to know if there are some of the previous titles that deserve a preservation project - for example, if the DVD or BD edition is more cropped than laserdisc, color timing is different, there are cut scenes, or there is an “improved” version (you know what I mean…) - if the DVD or BD is missing a DTS soundtrack but otherwise has no problems is not a sufficient reason to do a restoration project! (or not?)

Thanks in advance to all!

Off the top of my head, Dragonheart is supposedly DNR'd to death on Blu Ray, and the HD DVD is considered to have the better video. Apollo 13 is supposed to have DNR issues on Blu as well.

I have both Schindler's List and Stargate on DTS LaserDisc., along with many others.  If anyone can teach me how to rip them, I'd love to help.

First, you must have an audio capture card with digital input, and that must be bit-to-bit perfect.

I use VirtualDub to capture DTS laserdiscs, video and audio - audio set at 44.1KHz, uncompressed PCM.

Your help is highly appreciated!

Any recommendations on such an audio card?

I have a simple, old SigmaTel audio card with the CXD9872RD chipset, and, although it's not the best sound card around - at the contrary, it's quite mediocre! - it does its job...

Try to do a test: capture audio from a DTS laserdisc, let's say a minute, then play the file with your DTS sound system: if it plays correctly, your audio card is able to capture DTS sound stream.

Interesting! But it seems that the italian edition is the extended version, and not the theatrical one... (xx/)

Well then, all I have is 2 different U.S. Bluray releases, 1 theatrical, 1 extended.

...all I have is the PAL italian laserdisc (three copies, just to make median), NTSC US theatrical edition (two copies, just to be sure one is laser-rot free), and NTSC US extended edtion (one copy only... nobody is perfect...) (**,)
