ronwlim's custom bluray cases/box set

Author

 (Edited)

A few months ago I created a custom box set, cases and goodies for Harmy’s Despecialized Editions. I even made a set for Harmy.

Since I’ve also created other versions of the Bluray cases, I decided to make a new thread for just my designs. I’ll add more here as I design them. Future cases include Despecialized prequels and of course cases for the new trilogy.

NOTE: While I’m happy to provide download links for all my designs, please do not repost elsewhere without attribution. Also, these are meant to be FREE. Please do not create sets for sale using my designs.

Thank you!
Ron

EDIT: LINKS REMOVED! Sorry, but the pirates and bandits have ruined it for everyone. Due to unscrupulous individuals bootlegging and SELLING my design, I have decided to remove the links. I thought long and hard about this and it wasn’t an easy decision. Apologies for those who weren’t able to get the links before I removed them. I may someday do another run at a premium price. IF I do, I’ll post in this thread.

DO NOT PM ME. I WON’T PROVIDE YOU WITH THE FILES. YOUR PMs WILL GO UNANSWERED.

Here’s the original despecialized boxset…

Again, here’s a recipe for materials…
-The bluray cases can be found in Criterion’s online store in packs of 5.
-The bluray inserts are printed on matte 60-lb inkjet stock and printed 2-sided.

  • I printed directly onto the blank bluray discs with my Canon Pixma printer
-The mini-posters are printed on high-quality semi-glossy inkjet paper.
-The mini lobby cards are on a matte 60-lb card stock.
-The custom envelops for the posters and lobby cards are semi-gloss inkjet paper.
  • The laserdisc-style card and fake Topps card are both on 60-lb matte card stock, printed both sides.
-The slip cases are on a heavy matte card stock (not sure of weight). I reinforced the spine of the outer case with some white cardboard. I had to have a buddy print these as they were printed on 11x17 card stock.

I recommend getting a bone scorer to help get clean folds. They’re on Amazon for about $6. Everything is glued together with rubber cement using the dry mount method (you apply rubber cement to both surfaces, let it dry and then stick it together). It makes the glue very strong. A caveat that dry mounting cannot be reposititioned, so its important to get it right the first time.

Anyone know why images won’t appear within the post? I tried imgur’s message boards links.

Okay, my next set of OT covers. I’ll call this the Mondo series. I used the art by the guys at Mondo to create this set. Included at the link are disc labels using the Olly Moss art. THIS SERIES IS FOR STANDARD BLURAY CASES.

EDIT: LINKS REMOVED! Just grab the covers below.

Here’s bluray cases for Star Wars Specialized, or rather, REspecialized. So far, Harmy’s only completed ANH, but hopefully the other two will come down the pike. These are designed for Criterion style bluray cases. The link includes label art as well.

And my final cases for a while, retro cases for the OT. Using Drew Struzan’s circus poster as the inspiration, I made retro cases for all three films. This series uses Criterion style cases and the link includes artwork for the inside of the case as well (though no disc art this time).

You’re doing some damn fine work. I especially like the Mondo ones. Keep it up!

These look absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for your work.
Question for you or anyone else who may know: Has anyone tried to make somewhat of a guide on how to print the outer boxes for the set? Where to go, what to buy, etc. I assume I won’t be able to print these at home on my regular inkjet with regular paper, so what do I need?

I’d use the thickest stock that will fit through your printer for the covers. Nice stock really brings out the colors. The box set is tougher. You’ll need an 11x17 printer for that one. And you’ll also want to reinforce the spine with a piece of white cardboard glued inside.

It’ll take a lot of trial and error, but its worth it.

best,
Ron

Oh goodness, the work you’ve done on that top box set that Harmy did the video on is stellar! other than the disc labels for Star Wars and Empire, I’ve been dying to have this set made for me, but I’ve always been confused on where i can go to get these done for, or exact instructions on how to print out the inserts. If there was any way I could get someone to do it for me, or get very detailed instructions, this would be perfect for me! keep up the great work, Ron😃

Now that’s some seriously awesome stuff.

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

Thanks for the kind words. I’ve started the prequel trilogy cases but only TPM has been despecialized (Adywan).

Here’s another cover. This time for Team Negative1’s new silver screen release of the original Star Wars. I used the re-release poster as my inspiration. This is the cover, inside cover and disc art. Designed for standard Bluray style cases.

Added another option for the Silver Screen Edition. Also included a black label for the bluray. It will be included in the link in my previous post.

It just occurred to me I never uploaded my Criterion style cover for the Holiday Special. A lot of folks like the colored cover, but I wanted to keep it true to the original TV Guide ad. Includes inside sleeve art & label.

I just printed off your first set, and I realized there’s a typo in the Empire insert. In the first paragraph of the crawl on the back, you wrote “persued across the galaxy” instead of “pursued across the galaxy.” I downloaded the set many months ago so I don’t know if it’s been brought to your attention before, but I thought I’d let you know in case it hasn’t.

Good catch. At least its only on the sleeve and not the box! That would have sucked.
Thanks!!! Will fix it this weekend and re-upload.

Another thing if you’re going to re-upload the set:
Would it be possible to put the inner and outer parts of the inserts on the same pdf? As it is right now, the only way I know of printing both images is to print the first side, flip the sheet over and put it back into the printer, and then print the second side. Could there just be a simpler way to do that which I haven’t discovered yet?

Putting the documents in the same pdf doesn’t solve the problem. The insert is two-sided so you’ll have to wait for the first side to print (and preferably dry thoroughly) before printing the other side.

If I might ask, how did you get that curved E in the Serif Gothic font? I had to fashion mine from a C and a dash.

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

Author

Same technique: the “C” with the middle finger of the “E”.

Corrected on all covers which use the crawl. Thanks again for catching it!
