CSA, I don't have a link I am afraid. But I remember reading a Raimi interview a few years back where he talks about wanting to produce a straight up horror remake of The Evil Dead. His reasoning was something along the lines of he really liked the idea of the original film, the remote cabin, cursed book, and the deadites and thought it would be great to go back and remake it as a mainstream horror film.
I actually agree. Yes, the cult classic The Evil Dead is its own film, so I can see it being hard for some to imagine a remake without the camp and without Ash. But I think if you set all that aside, there is the basis of a pretty cool little horror movie there. No, nothing spectacular or completely original, but a fun little scare fest.
I am surprised how much flak this idea gets from fans. Seems like every message board I have every seen concerning this has been a bunch of eye rolling and complaining. If you put yourself in Raimi's shoes, you have this early work of yours that you really put a lot into, it was a really low budget, low tech thing. Now you've become a pretty big, well known, main stream director. Is it not unreasonable to want to revisit this early project of yours and redo it big budget and mainstream, the way you only dreamed to have been able to do it in the first place? I think it is pretty lame how so few fans seem to be getting behind him and supporting him.
George Lucas can make three worthless, superfluous films, continuing his classic series, and the fans only love him more for it. He can go back and alter and change the old films and suppress the originals and his legions of fans come to his defense over it and back up every silly decision he makes. But a guy like Raimi comes along and simply wants to reuse the idea from his original low budget film he made when he was a nothing no-name director, remade big budget for a modern audience, and his fans all cry foul. Wish a few of his fans could be a bit more like Lucas' TFN crowd...
