I like the larger font, and option #4 on the style (I'm not a fan of using color or other unusual font styles).

the subs on the dvd are yellow. personally i think yellow suits kill bill beautifully. i would,nt use colored subs on most movies but in this case i think yellow is the way to go but we will see what others think. thanks for the input frink.

Don't get me wrong, I know the subs are yellow on the dvd.  I don't like those either :p

lol frink. also here are 2 more font choices. the one used in all the previous pics was ariel. the first one here is franklin gothic suggested by chainsawash. and the second is bookman old style. the font used in kill bill and throughout my dvd menus.

I'd go with size 16, yellow, no outline, black drop shadow (drop shadow shouldn't be "soft," and it should go down and to the right), and probably a Franklin Gothic or Helvetica-style font.  Also, a wee bit higher.

And I'd also preserve the color changes as present on the Region 1 DVDs (as in, in that one scene they're green, and then red, instead of yellow), but also keep the same size/font and black drop shadow.

I think Inglourious Basterds is a good reference for Kill Bill subtitles.  They kept the theatrical (burned-in) subtitles on the DVD/Blu-Ray (I think), and they look pretty much exactly how I remember the Kill Bill subtitles looking in theaters:

(totally didn't realize that was a GIF until I pasted it in here, haha)

helvetica is a pay font. and franklin i did not like any of them. as for the drop shadow yeah down to the right would be good. size 16 font takes up way to much screen real estate. i think unless i am voted down i really like the bookman font i know its not the original style but hey this is a fanedit. the only other font i will use is ariel. and the outline adds definition bigtime. in certain scenes with no outline the subs are very much not defined against the picture after playing with it for hours i decided the outline is a must. any red is out for sure as it just looks blury. so its yellow text with black effects. if anyone wants to post some mockups like from photoshop of what they like feel free i am still open but one way or another this edit is going to be finalized tonight. thanks for input as always ash you have a good eye for detail.

Serif fonts are rarely good for subtitles.  I'd strongly advise against Bookman for this reason.  It's much harder to read.

Also, you have a PM.

--edit--

By the way, you say that red looks too blurry.  Try making it less red than true red.  True red tends to bleed very badly in NTSC video, which is probably where you're getting the blurriness.

Also keep in mind that your color values should never go all the way to 255, or you'll have an illegal video signal - 235 is the limit for NTSC video.

Just caught up with this again ibleedspeed.  And just to muddy the waters, I gotta say, like Frink, I really liked the 'white' example you showed on the previous page...but also really like the look of the 'yellow' IB examples that Ash has shown above, too.  What I'm not keen on is the 'Bookman' font example though.  Personally, I prefer a simpler-looking font like 'Ariel' for this kind of thing.

Looks like you'll just have to do what suits you best personally, as there doesn't seem to be much concensus on this, lol.

ok well i am about to begin on the subs! i did a lot of work on the dvd main menu today. the dvd is fully authored and i made a test copy mounted and looked at everything in the menus and tested all the media. i had a problem with audio sync in 2 of the special features. but figured it out i believe. i had set the framerate for those to videos in dvd architect to 23.976 fps and they are 29.970 videos. so fixed that and everything is looking golden. as for the subs. since only a few had an opinion it looks like a draw straws deal. so for me i think i will go with yellow ariel black outline black dropshadow its simple and means less work since they are already ariel. thanks for all the input guys. it wont be long now.

Perfect!  Maybe even a little too small still, but that might just be my own personal preference.

Glad to see you didn't go with the 'Bookman' then.

But didn't you suggest size 16 yourself Ash?  I agree it somehow seems to look a tad on the small side in that latest example though, strangely enough.

I did, but I was just assuming how it would look compared to the 14 that he'd used before.  I tend to resize manually in FCP or Avid when I do subtitles instead of fiddling around with font point sizes, so I don't really know what sizes are too small/too big.

But leaving them at the size they're at now would be fine, they're perfectly legible as it is.
