premier vs vegas?

i would like to start editing my project tonight. i was wondering if anybody has an opinion on which is a better video editing program? i just tried out premier and first impression was that premier would be a rough learning curve but on the positive it accepts vob and vegas does not. i rendered 1 clip in mainconcept and it was pretty quick. just hoping someone has used both and knows the ins and outs. thanks for reading and or posting.

I wouldn't edit from the raw VOBs no matter what editing platform you choose.  I'd strongly recommend converting the DVD files to lossless AVI (lagarith or huffyuv codec), and load that into Vegas or Premiere.  When you've finished editing, render it out as another lossless AVI, then use that one to convert back to DVD or whatever other format you decide to distribute with.  The downside is that you'll need a LOT more hard drive space for this (I'd go with at least 500GB just to be safe, though I doubt you'll need that much).

To answer your question, I've never used Vegas, but Premiere really isn't that hard to learn how to use.  It's what I learned how to edit on back in high school.

ok i have heard that before. but what program should i use to convert to lossless avi? i have about 350 gigs free on my laptop. and an external with about 650 gigs free. so i must use the external to import to. sadly it is usb 2.0 sorry for all the questions. but could you give me a breakdown of the steps you would use prior to editing. the two sources are untouched and both have time code errors. do i need to fix that via adm,s tutorial or can i go from the sources to the lossless avi? thanks chainsaw. and thanks again for ignoring my stupidity. lol your alright in my book ash.

i have found out that avidemux will output to huffyuv. so i am testing that now. also i downloaded the huffyuv codec but do not know what to do with it. i am in doubt that avidemux is what i should use but its a start. i simply demuxed the video and 1 ac3 track using rejig. then fed the m2v to avidemux. am i on the right track or completely lost?

That sounds right to me, but I don't know much about Windows programs, so I can't help you much beyond that.

I use Vdub to convert to lossless AVI.  Open the Avisynth script pointing to your d2v in Vdub.

Video--> Compression --> Whatever (I recommend Lagarith lossless codec)

File--> Save as AVI

Before you load the Avisynth script in, you can add a line to the script converting your video to whatever colorspace you want to use in your editor (which is what I would do) and select fast recompress.  Alternatively, using full processing mode (which is the default setting) will allow you to use vdub's filters; this will trigger a conversion to RGB.

ok chewy i will give that a shot. i ended up trying to do it through tmpgenc and it would have all worked but after it was done converting to huffyuv. the picture shrunk. it ended up with black boarders on the sides. i tried it over and over checking avs script for reasons why it did it. but cant figure it out. i had 720X480 on both size settings. does anyone know what i missed? or how to make sure i end up with a 16x9 720x480 picture?

The program SUPER is great for converting as well.

Also, Vegas can accept most VOBs, but it's not perfect. Some VOBs can cause problems, such as multiple angles (i.e. the multi-language crawl in Star Wars.) It is best to convert the VOB to huffy first, both for stability and speed.
