Making A SWVC YouTube Video on Han v Greedo

Hey gang, I think I’m going to try my hand at making a Star Wars Visual Comparisons YouTube video covering the changes to Han v Greedo in editing and re-editing, with the goal to prove that Greedo shooting is plain and simple revisionism with no basis in the original edit or filming.

Now that I have most of my sources, I’m going to use this thread for updates. I’m going all out for this video, I’ll let you know if I need anything else!

The lost cut version of the cantina is available in much higher quality on the 2011 Blu-Ray set (and many subsequent releases).

Those outtakes come from the digital version of the ‘Making Of’ Star Wars books by Rinzler. They’re probably only marginally better than that YouTube video of you grab them straight from the source, unfortunately.

And as for the Jabba scene, I believe OT.com user Bobson Dugnutt was attempting a better recreation of it. I don’t believe he has finished it yet. And it will probably never be completely seamless as a portion of the scene only exists with scrolling credits over it.

Let me know if you need help finding anything else!

The shot of greedo looking over at the deal was moved… It should be placed directly before “I’m Han solo” and be dubbed with “nice moves old man nice moves”

There is also the informant that leaves after Ben says “A ship that might suit us” removing the wipe.

No time to type at the mo but that should help some more.

Edit:

I will send you a edit to show you what I can…

Perhaps talking about the fate of Ponda Baba (Walrus man) and his numerous death variations and then focusing on Greedo and there being a few various things that could be different leading up to his death but not that at any point was there a point at which he shoots.

It might be a good way to frame the argument that Greedo shooting at storm troopers if the actors tale is true is accepted but not that he got one off against han.

the still of the dummy is probably the placement of the Special edition angle and it should only last that many frames with Hans laser resized to fit the rest of the times he fires. If greedo did fire then a squib would have been placed in the wall.

I was planning on explaining the filming and the reshoots, comparing how little changed between the Lost Cut and the final cut, showing that GWL had plenty of time to think about and change his mind about the scene. I maybe should mention how he DID change Ponda Baba’s death, that might be a good idea…

Yeah it is just a few trims and a few things moved about Han Kissing the hot chick goes where the shot of greedo is and greedo moves to before “I’m Han Solo” but because they moved it we lost the dubbed lines over the greedo looking shot.

There is only small trims here and there nothing at all such as major difference as you say between lost cut and final edit.

Here was the edit I did and and it shows a slightly different scene order…

Just thinking to include the informant would it make more sense on the line “found a ship that might suit us” it cut’s to Han kissing the Girl then back to the informant that leaves the bar and then as he walks we wipe on him to outside?

but that is pretty much all the whole thing I have to be honest I only realised the dubbed line over the Greedo shot the other day and it’s not in the edit I did because I did not realise it at the time…

the only other thing I notice is Lukes muffled line at the bar ordering a drink could be mild censorship too.

Thats all and hope it helps you can use the Walrus decap shot if it helps your video project too and good luck with it 😃

Don’t listen to Ronster, 005. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about, he just makes completely unfounded assumptions and then assumes that he’s right.

I never said I was right but if your about to do a business deal and your prospective client is in the middle of a bit of slap and tickle not only is it funny but it also would create an awkward enough moment to leave the interior space and follow the informant out side while Han deals with having to tell her he’s got other stuff on.

It would then be good story telling funny and you don’t feel like you would be missing any of the action… To be honest you won’t ever know how it should or could be but you can guess and that’s all perhaps the wipe is in the wrong place and too early.

The point is as Ben Kenobi said “you can’t win, but there are alternatives” and although there are quite a few different alternatives, Greedo Shooting his gun at all in the cantina was not one of them.

What are you on about? I did not understand anything you just said.

Either way, you admitted that you have no way to prove your claims, so it has nothing to do with a video focused on objective history. Can we please stop now?

If you search this forum you will find a post by Lorne Peterson talking about the various different versions of Walrus mans demise…

Basically Lorne Peterson declares the head decapiticion was never intended to be used, which I can buy into as the sound mix with the squeling suggests the arm was chosen and no variation to that, but then we must hear a lightsaber strike when Luke looks and watches whatever limb or body part get’s lopped off which is in the video I posted.

But they were unhappy with the original flipper arm shot so they were asked to reshoot the arm… all they had to hand was wolfman hands and not the flipper hand of walrus man so that is why it is the way it is in the film.

There is no such story for Greedo and Han’s scene in the cantina no squibs in the wall, no sort of oh that might of went this way or that way no crew members rushing forward to spill the beans on how Greedo shot first and missed because it’s not something that was ever planned or even earmarked for change. Thats all really. Even if they decided to swap scottish Jabba for Greedo at docking bay 94 to collect Han’s debts the fact they did the pick ups in cantina is basically case closed that it was cited as 'needs to change" and identified as such.
