kk650's Regraded Titanic (1997) IMAX (blanket yellow tint removed from 3D blu-ray) (Released)

This is a regraded IMAX version of Titanic to mark the 20th Anniversary of this great film. I removed a strong blanket yellow tint that has been added to the whole film on the Titanic 3D blu-ray. The release is 22.8 GB and includes the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track from the blu-ray. I’ve put it up of Myspleen for those that are interested in checking it out. If there is interest, I can also put up the 46GB version of this release that I created to have as good image quality as possible.

Here are some screencap comparisons:

That definitely looks a lot better.

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

What an amazing improvement you made ! Congratulations ! The movie is very close to the 2nd DVD ! I personnally prefer the LD master that came out in letter box with the first DVD in which colors were even more natural I think. But the work is already outstanding ! I hope it shall be accessible elsewhere than Myspleen which is, alas, hard to join without any invitation… 😉

May you get some screenshot comparison? I noted sometimes differences between LD and DVD color grading, but usually the DVD version was released several years after LD.

And yes, this grading is a lot better than 3D BD, which is overly teal.

If someone can tell me the way to post screenshots, it would be fine. I must be dumb I do not see how to. 😦

I think I have found !

Here a couple of screenshots close to yours. You will see that colors are much more filmlike. The second DVD was filtered with this yellow tint, not as much as the bluray, but it’s really different from the LD master. That’s why I’ve never watched my 2nd DVD or my bluray. I prefer my low resolution DVD print. I was hoping someone could find a 35mm copy, but if you can correct the IMAX version it will be great too because this version is truly immersive, but colors are so bad… I used handbrake to obtain a widescreen version from the letter box DVD. Then, with Nvidia Shield TV and MPV android player (oversample scaler) plus a Matchbox HQV Vida (between the shield and the TV) the result is ok with 4 meters of distance for a 55" . Of course, the IMAX version is better in terms of resolution, depth and sharpness. 😃

I thank you Beetking. 😉 My post has advanced yours. Unfortunately the images appear only in links.

Just quote a post with image to “learn” how to insert images - that’s what I did! 😉

Thanks for all the feedback!

You all refering to warmer grading of the DVD and Laserdisc releases got me thinking, so I checked out the 3D blu-ray again and I think you’re right, Titanic is meant to be warmer and have more of that sunset feel to it in daylight shots. I have adjusted the grading settings accordingly and will be releasing a Version 2 of the Titanic IMAX release very soon.

EDIT: V2 Screencaps removed because settings have been updated.

Thank you very much for the tip! It’s now easier to see differences. 😉

Any plans on doing the same with the 2.35:1 2D Blu-ray?

If there is enough interest, sure. I’ll personally be watching the IMAX version of Titanic from now on though, I prefer the whole TV screen to be filled up with no black bars on the top or bottom, increases immersion for me.

That’s better KK650. But I wonder if it’s not a little too cold, too blue maybe ? If you compare the sky and the sea, they tend to be respectively white and grey in the LD master, while in V2 they are almost of the same color and indistinct. I can’t wait to see the final result !

SkellingtonJack, I don’t want you to end up being disappointed unnecessarily, remember that the aim of this project is not to recreate the colour grading of previous home releases like the Laserdisc that has a very distinctive blanket reddish look but to the detriment of the blues, but to actually bring back the blues by removing all the blanket yellow tint on the blu-ray.

V1 was probably missing some warmth though, just removing all the blanket yellow tint wasn’t enough, so with V2 i’ve adjusted the settings to add that warmth back. The previous V2 screencaps were a little too saturated, I got carried away and when I came back after a 2 hour break and had a look at my settings I could see that i’d gone overboard. That’s why its important to take breaks when regrading and reaccess so you don’t go too far down the rabbit hole. Here are screencap comparisons using the final V2 settings:

You are right KK650, your (hard) work is a good compromise between red and blue. In fact, the IMAX version (V2 finale) seems to have a softer look now with less agressive colours, and I like that. I wish I could see the result in movement, but…

I’m glad you like my latest settings, I got a little carried away with the first V2 screencaps I put up, they looked fine in certain scenes but in others, I could see that it was way too much saturation.

If you’re hinting at needing a Myspleen invite, I wish I could help but I don’t have any more invites to give. Hopefully a kind soul will step in and help you out.

I have few invites left, but maybe I can trust SkellingtonJack…

What do you think, KK? 😉
