kill bill the whole bloody affair ibleedspeed edit (Released) — Page 2

got the dvd fully authored today. a lot of work went into it. main menu went through vegas for animation. the dvd is loaded with extras and i learned how to manage the size quite well the entire dvd without the main title is down to 1 gb. so this leaves room for the main title to be about 6.9 gb. should be very good video quality.i have gotten very friendly with vegas, dvd architect, and after affects. all that is left to do now is edit the video and create soft subs. i think it may be easier to compose the soft subs then to manually add all the subs in vegas i will have to resync all the subs after the final video renders. again this will lead to the best video quality i can get. my final vol 2 uncut source will be here tomorrow and it is looking like the finished product will be done much earlier then i thought. i had no idea this project would turn out this well i expected a lot less of my first effort but this is going fantastic. not to toot my own horn but damn!

Since QtheGaijin's epic edit is my default version of the KILL BILL movies, I'm certainly looking forward to seeing how yours turns out.

I see there's been a few comments saying QtheGaijin's picture quality is poor, but that's certainly not the case with the dual-layer that I have.  It looks very, very good indeed, so I just wonder about the ones that others have gotten hold of.

Anyway, I'm really pleased to hear that you've included the 'proverb' at the start of your edit, as I really missed that in QtheGaijin's version.  I reckon it really helped to set a certain 'tone' for the over-the-top, violent antics that followed -

I'll be interested to see how much I miss the 'Bill kicks ass' scene though, as seeing more of David Carridine in action was one of the highlights of QtheGaijin's edit for me.  I do like the sound of your transition from Vol.1 to Vol.2 a little better however, although I'm fine with QtheGaijin's too.

Just a little thing, but I reckon I preferred your initial 'the whole bloody affair' font better in your earlier version, that you previewed on 'QtheGaijin's' edit thread  (shown at the bottom here)

I personally like it's look and spacing in relation to the KILL BILL lettering a bit more than your latest example, but no worries -

However - if you include an 'intermission' on this, then this is dead to me!  I hate 'em, lol.

Good luck with this, whatever you do.

thanks for the interest imperialfighter. hmm you have me wondering about the qthegaijin edit. most comments i have seen on it siad that the video quality was poor. in my copy it was badly interlaced. scan lines real bad and fuzzy. wonder if the copy i got was manipulated after the release by people who did not know how to do it.  the new font is the same font used in the original title i found it on chance its a windows standard font called "bookman old style" i kind of decided on it to keep it original. i continued with the bookman font in all the menu,s on my dvd. butt if you prefer the keetano kill bill font then maybe others do too. i would like opinions on that if your checking out this thread let me know what you think. keep in mind that my twba title fades in and out exactly with the kill bill above it.  impfighter i would like to use the demoe bill scene but for me it was a little too campy for the rest of the movie the only scene that seems this campy in the movie is when she is driving in the open of vol 2 and that scene is getting cut also. and the missing graphic of the sword scabbard killed it for me. i would not know how to add the graphic in after effects and it would be too much work to learn to do it. i would like to release this before Q.T releases the real thing.lol    the intermission was just a thought Q.T. spoke of adding kung fu sounds and various elements to make the intermission fun but i  am with impfighter on this it wont be done. let me know what you guys think about the 2 fonts. thanks impfighter for posting the comparison and all the input.

I think the new font is better, but the words shouldn't be nearly as thin and tall, and the font size should be small enough to fit under "Bill."

Just my $0.02.

I found mine through fanedit.org (RS links) and burned with ImgBurn and it looks terrible...might I ask where you found yours?

i agree the font is too thin but i dont think what your saying is possible. if i make the words fit under bill it shrinks the whole font. how could i make the font wider yet shrink the total size? does that not require making a custom font? i am sure that is what Q.T. did but i dont have a clue how to make a font. if i made the font as big as the "kill bill" it was still thinner then "kill bill". maybe i will work on the size but i dont think i can make it any thicker.

No, you can change the height without changing the width (or vice versa).  For instance, I whipped this up in Photoshop real quick-like:

Author

yeah you are right about having the words be smaller to fit under "bill" that does look better. but i still dont see that the font is any thicker. what i did was i created a huge text in photoshop 1920x1080 layer. in bold. then drug that over to my composition in after effects and free transformed it to shrink it down without ending up with jagged edges. is this the right way ash? or how should i do it? thanks for the help.

The font itself isn't thicker.

Here's what I did to make that image:

I took yours, used the rectangle selection tool to select "THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR," cut it out of that layer, pasted it onto a new one, then used Edit>Transform>Scale to change the size.  You can stretch it to be taller or shorter, wider or slimmer that way.

What I'd do is take a screencap of the "KILL BILL" from the DVD (without the "Vol. 1") at full 720x480 size (saved as a TIFF or PNG, and not as a JPG), bring it into Photoshop, add the new text (the process I described above can be done to a text layer as well, not just an image layer), put it where you want it, flatten the image, save it, then import it back into your video editing program and match it up to the real logo, adding fade-in/fade-out as necessary to get it to match.

It's always better to use a lower point size for the typeface and then kern it to fit than distorting the text as a field (if possible) as it preserves the dimensions of the typeface.

sounds like a good plan ash. i will do just that. thanks for clarifying guys.

But the point is we don't want to preserve the dimensions of the typeface.

Annoyingly, I can't for the life of me remember.

Darth Solo was good enough to pass on a 'compressed' copy to me initially (in May 2008 it turns out), but then a friend of mine searched around and found the dual-layer somewhere or other (possibly Demonoid or Linktalk)...but I just can't remember properly.  I'll ask him, but as it was that long ago, I'll be surprised if he remembers either.  All I know for sure, was that it wasn't from Fanedit.org, not that that's much help.

But I'm curious to know how bad the version over there is, so may check it out at some point soon.

By the way ibleedspeed, the more I look at your original 'the whole bloody affair' wording, the more I'd like to see that done in RED for contrast next to the white 'Kill Bill'.  Same for whatever font you end up going with for this, but that's just me, lol.

Okay, I just came across this interesting article about KILL BILL:THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR over at Aintitcoolnews today, which was posted just a couple of days ago, it seems.  If any of you are curious enough to bear it, it's worth clicking on the '+ Expand All' option beside the 'READERS TALKBACK' underneath the article, to find some interesting comments and thoughts on it amongst the usual nonsense -  http://www.aintitcoolnews.com/node/49042

Something that I hadn't reckoned on though, till it was mentioned by someone there...is the possibility that the eventual Blu-ray release might end up being spread over 2 discs...just like the damned upcoming 'Extended' versions of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy is going to be!  Never mind an 'intermission', it might as well be an old 'flipper' disc, if that's the case, as far as I'm concerned.  (and yes, I really can't stand the unnecessary one that continues to split 2001:A SPACE ODYSSEY either...but at least I can skip that)

And just for some additional info. for those that have never seen the Japanese version, here's a couple of comparison links below -

More info. and screenshot comparisons - Note: those of a sensitive nature should stay clear of this next one... :)

cool! nice links imperial fighter. btw i did mess around with some red in the title trying to get a blood spattered affect. but in the end it just felt too homemade, ish for what i am trying to accomplish. good news guy,s i am here taking a brake from doing the subtitles manually in vegas. it,s hard to tell what they really look like on my 15" screen but i would say its looking awesome!! i am almost halfway through the 1st volume on the subs. its a major job doing it like this but chainsawash was so right about doing it this way. i can sync it all to perfection and keep the subs down in the letterbox and out of the picture. the subs are yellow with arial font. cant post a pic just yet until i render it out then you guys can get a glimpse. but hey! who needs a pic when i will be releasing it in just a few days. the editing is done and its glorious. tough first project for me but worth it all to learn everything i have. i owe a lot to the members at ot.com for sharing their wisdom. KILL BILL THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR is coming soon. and i think you all will be pleased.

I really do not know why they made our version black & white during that scene, what a joke! but all is good now, when I found that out, and found out Japan's version was uncut and in color, I ordered them babies pronto.

Does anyone know if the Blu-ray release is also in black & white?

The black & white was to keep an R rating, as cartoony blood in color is clearly more psychologically damaging than cartoony blood in black-and-white.

Also, and this is purely a personal preference, but I hate subtitles in the black letterbox bars.  I prefer them to be at the bottom of the image itself, with a little bit of a drop shadow behind.

Out of curiosity, what font are you using for the subtitles?

the bluray releases are the us cut. it is sad that the uncut edition has yet to be released on bluray because i have the blurays and they look stunning. considering the number of years it took to release bluray editions the fact that they still went with the us cut of the film is just a smudge on the otherwise flawless record of Q.T.   but i blame mirawacks not the great director. it seems he has been left to his own device to release the whole bloody affair. to the point of he had to buy a theater to get the fim shown on the bigscreen. i have hope for a bluray edition but if it is spread across 2 discs then its pointless.      chaisawash  i went with the standard arial font. i looked at using the bookman font but arial just looked cleaner.  and me personally i love the subs in the letterbox. i have always felt that subs in the picture takes away from the cinematic quality of a film that relies mostly on visual elements. i would rather see heads chopped off without words stamped across them.lol.   i will never forget the day i was in blockbuster buying some movies and was approached by a suburbanite couple in there 40,s, a real soccermom and conservative lawyer type. the lady was clutching kill bill vol 1 and 2 in her hand.   she looks at me with that  donna reed haircut and says are these movies any good?  the husband was like  in shock his wife was gonna let him rent them.  and all i could do was smile wide and say um well your holding 2 of my favorite movies ever made. so are they good? i would have to say no they are amazing! but do i think you should watch them? i would say if you do not mind a little bit of blood then i would send the kids to bed grab a cocktail and get ready to have a one of kind viewing experience!   i left that rental smiling just knowing that they would get maybe half way through the first volume before the wife suddenly gets "really sleepy" and goes to bed with a shocked disgusted feeling and the husband stays up late and watches both films while pounding back beers and loving every minute of it. it just goes to show film violence in the usa is both loved and hated. and the exec,s in hollywood are subdivided by young people who know what america wants to see and conservative tightwads who still think we want to see martin lawrence dressed up as a fat women.  as a result of this segregation we ended up with kill bill split and chopped.  all i can say is the only way Q.t. is gonna make his fans happy is by adding the 7 extra minutes to the oren anime he talked about and releasing the entire film on 1 glorious bluray disc. i have hope! but the truth is he will have to work out his own distribution to give us what we want. sorry for the run on rant guys my grammar is lacking!

i rendered this clip out to mpg for those wondering about the subs. however after resizing it to fit here i think the text color faded a little. its brighter yellow.

The font looks good ibleedspeed. :)  Personally, I'm not usually keen on subtitles that aren't plain white, but yellow ones seem to suit this particular movie okay anyway.  And gotta say that I'm with you on keeping the subs in the letterbox itself, as I reckon it's a shame to obscure any footage, which can be distracting behind them if not.

I may not have chosen Arial myself (I'd have gone with Franklin Gothic or Helvetica), but I've gotta admit that those subs look pretty damn good.

Don't forget that when the picture is stretched back out to make it 16:9, the subtitle text is going to get shorter/wider, as well.  Just something to keep in mind.
