Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray? — Page 5

If this 4K thing catches on, the Blu Ray masters aren't going to cut the mustard. They'd have to to go back to a film master, and that leaves the '97 versions and the OOT.

I doubt the Mouse nor Fox are going to let the 40th anniversary in 2017 go unexploited.

If Disney doesn't release the OOT, they deserve to be hated just as much as Lucas.

Just look how they re-shaped Episode 7 from Lucas/Arndt's first draft, as they are making Han, Luke and Leia more prominent in the movie.

That seems like a change for the worse.

How?

Fixed.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

^Especially since, unlike Lucas, they don't have an inane excuse to withhold the OOT.

She seemed to believe that as of now, disney receives no income from the current home releases.

That doesn't sound right. Fox never got close to 100% of the money from the current releases, only a distribution cut. Why would they get so much more now?

Then again, they thought LD masters on DVD was an acceptable release in 2006...

Lucas may have thought that, but that's a very low standard.

And let's not forget those brand new, cutting edge VHS TAPES from the year 2000.

I honestly think they will never be seen again (restored), the only option is the old vhs versions/laser disc version and the 2006 'limited edition'  Bonus disc or Gout as you guys call it. I would really love to see HD versions of the OT and see all the SE and prequels destroyed (I cringe every time I see these films/characters). My only fear is what is yet to come (in terms of even worse films) and the fact that 'Princess Leia' will ultimately become a 'Disney princess'.  However ,I am interested in seeing fan HD versions but cannot for love nor money find the despecialised version anywhere???

Nooooooo

How wrong is the photo above? ;)

The argument can be successfully made both ways, with the main problem being exactly who owns what rights and for how long. But that being said I think an OOT release of some type can and will happen...at some unforeseen point. Remember, the entire 1966 Batman series is being released, so anything is possible.

Disney has been doing restorations and work on their properties virtually nonstop since first getting the bug in the early 90's. Of course their revisionism with their classic animated titles is beyond reprehensible but as far as the live action materials go, the Mouse is on the forefront of properly maintaining and preserving films.

So really they're in about the best hands they could be in provided that someone actually takes the initiative to do so. Knightmessenger's posts on the necessity of a new scan for newer hi-res versions are actually spot-on, it would be something that would have to be done in order to have a better source than the horribly outdated 2K SE source scan and the pointless 1080p downrezzed and crayon scribbled video master.

(BTW Blade Runner has never looked as good as the Final Cut 35mm print. The BD is pitiful in comparison.)

Let it be a Vault release. A licensed title for a boutique label (Criterion could practically do it with good results in house), even a MOD release...just let it out there with no frills...and websites would crash because of demand. Just don't expect things like multiple audio tracks unless we do it. (Despite LFLs claims of having all this material digitally archived within fingertips!!!!! ARGH!)

You don't think they'd take input from a coalition of mad researchers would you? It's not like we don't have the most vast and detailed amount of SW version research ever assembled.

Tell me about it. Mulan isn't even royalty, let alone a princess.

The Lowry master doesn't even cut the mustard right now in terms of a theatrical re-release. All of the digital projectors installed in theaters right now are at least full 2K res (2048 by 1080). Lowry only did the 2004 job with hdtv in mind. The projectors in theaters at the time were 1280 by 1024, I believe, with an anamorphic lens to unsqueeze the image to its full ratio (someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not so sure about that).

So, whether 4K tv catches on or not, the current digital master shouldn't be used with anything but a blu-ray reissue in mind.

Doctor M posted this earlier:

I think it would be interesting if true. Although to be quite frank, I find it really hard to believe, but one can dream right?

Not only that, but for me, there would be serious questions over how this would even be accomplished, and more importantly to the satisfaction of those who want to see it released.

I like the sound of that bit about erasing the SEs and the Prequels from the canon, that would be pretty awesome :-D

The whole thing's probably a farce though.

I'm pretty sure that "if" the "unaltered" versions will be released we will find out that it's either the 1993 versions. Or the 1997 versions. Or the 2004 versions.

They won't do it.

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

When it is eventually released(OOT)i hope it isn't via a branching option to view the SE also.

Author
Time

I can't imagine it would be with branching.

If they wanted to release an ultimate collection, some day, with 1997, 2004, and 2011 on bluray, branching would make sense. There is probably virtually no market for such a thing, though.

Author

With the number of changes made across the different versions, it would be very impractical to use branching - you could have two branched discs, one with the 1977 and 1981 versions and the other with the 1997, 2004 and 2011 versions but not all on one disc.

Author

I guess everyone will just have to wait 'til Rainbo-Ray discs are invented before they'll be able to get seamless branching of that calibre all on one disc. ;-P

It's pretty ridiculous that George Lucas stated that the special editions are the way he always wanted the films to be. That's total BS. If that were true, then there wouldn't be several versions of the special editions. If they are how he always wanted them, he would've included the infamous "Noooo!" that Darth Vader says in ROTJ in 2004, not several years later. If he really wanted a rock covering R2D2 in Star Wars, he would've done that when he filmed it. The fact that he constantly makes changes to his films proves he never intended anything really. He's never satisfied with what he has so nothing he ever does will ever be what he "always intended."

A random thought I had the other day:

Lucasfilm always made sure to time their dvd releases of the movies with a video game. The '04 OT set hit the same day as Battlefront. RotS dvd hit the same day as Battlefront II. The GOUT's release was the same day as one of the Lego Star Wars games.

Anyway, we know the new Battlefront game is releasing by the end of this year. It would make sense for them to schedule some kind of blu-ray release for the same day.

On the blu-ray.com forum, someone posted that the UOT will be released on blu-ray on 9/21/15.  Seems legit, right?
