Now, rather than having a glaring hole in my ST collection -- 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8.... I can fit GENERATIONS (KIRKLESS GENERATIONS) in to that slot without hesitation.

I see that 5 is not in your collection. Have you seen the Star Trek Phase II edit of 5?

I watched the Phase II Edit too, but for me it doesn't work. ST5 does not gain anything from cutting something out of it. I would propably make it longer. Okay, I would cut the crappy vision stuff out when Sybok makes the trio see their past.

And, to make a long story short; it works. There are still some logic gaps that come straight from the script but the removal of Kirk makes the movie move a lot faster and keeps it far more interesting.

Initially, Kirk was never part of the next generation part of the movie. He really would have died in the Enterprise B incident. They filmed additional scenes after the first screening, fans didn't like Kirk to die so early in the movie. And then, after a second screening, they reshot some of the Veridian stuff, because fans didn't like Kirk getting shot in the back.
So as you can see, the film definetly works without Kirk in the next generation part, because it was scripted this way. But my favorite cut would leave the Enterprise B stuff still in. Just remove him from the end.

But his death then would be rather fast and without proper burial or last words... i don't think James T. deserves to be just wiped out. Heroes die differently.

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

I don't think Kirk was ever intended to die on the Enterprise-B and that's that. The whole incident was merely a vehicle to get Kirk into the Nexus so he could meet up with Picard later in the film.

The idea and execution of the Nexus never made sense to me (no, please don't explain the physics of it), so this edit is making a bad thing good, IMHO.

This is correct, the point of the film was to have Picard and Kirk team up.
