of the six films, which do u believe had the best lightsaber battle? For me was the phantom menace. the music, the intensity, seeing the saber go through qui-gon and this maul getting cut in half. awsome! not to mention that darth maul was the greatest sith out of the entire saga.
To me it is tied between Vader and Luke in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, though ive always thought the empire duel the best, i still Love it in ROTJ when Luke just goes nuts on Vader.
Luke gets owned in Empire Strikes Back, and when they duel at the start in Jedi Luke and Vader are equalls, but because Vader is an old man and mostly machine Luke Bests him.
If it had been Luke Versus a Non cybernetic Vader the results would have probably been far different.
The Luke in the original trilogy could never best any of the old jedi from the fallen order during the old republic, But the Superhuman Luke from the EU who can seemingly cleave a stardestroyer in half with his lightsaber could take even prequel Anakin.

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan VS Darth Maul is one of the few memorable parts to come out of the prequel trilogy, if not the only. I liked it back in 99 and like it today. Sometimes I'll go back and watch just those scenes.
Forget AOTC.
Obi-Wan VS Vader in ROTS was all flash with no substance. Only the enviroment itself is what kept my attention from wandering in '05, and today I never watch it all the way through.
Obi-Wan VS Vader in ANH is cool, albeit pretty sluggish in parts.
Luke VS Vader in ESB is spectacular all around. Vader really comes undone and lays down the law on Luke, who manages to hold his own for quite a while.
Luke VS Vader in ROTJ is one of the few watchable parts of the film, but I still prefer the ESB duel.

I like Luke/Vader 2 in ROTJ. When Luke gets all pissed, and the choir kicks in, that gives me chills.
I'll say I think the Obi/Vader 1 in ROTS is great... up until they start swining on vines over lava and things just get ridiculous. I think the moves, and the speed, and the saber and force attacks up until then are awesome. All that CGI near the end felt like gilding a lilly.
ESB (Vader vs Luke)
The reason this is the best duel, IMO, is because this is the only duel that combines great intensity, great drama, great action, and great surroundings. All of the other duels have good areas (TPM has a great action but zero drama, ROTJ had good drama, but little action because it is such a short duel. ANH has great dialogue but lame action, ROTS starts off with a bang on Mustafar but loses steam once they start lava surfing as it becomes a video game at that point)
If you watch the ESB duel, it is the only one where you really understand what Luke is going through, as Kershner did a great job of showing the duel from LUKES POV. The Duel builds and builds as Vader is kicking Lukes as physically and mentally as Luke lie there late in the duel utterly a beaten man. And I didn't even need to mention the revelation to make my point either, but of course that is icing on the cake.
Trust me guys, watch the ESB Cloud City duel again between Vader and Luke, it is the only duel that has EVERYTHING!

i agree on the music. when i hear it, it just shoots emotions up in me. i don't think the duel was great though due to the fact that it wasn't really a duel 'cause luke was only trying to bring his father back.
The swinging i barely remember, but the gliding on the service droid platforms, that kinda bugged me.
