Info Wanted: are preservation projects valid anymore?

I’ve been a reader on this board for quite a while (and used to post under an old forgotten id). I followed all the fan preservation threads with fascination.

But now that the non-anamorphic official DVD’s of the original trilogy have been released I have to ask, are these preservation projects valid anymore? Is anybody going to be able to improve on the official DVD’s?

I would say they're valid for a reason that you touched upon in your post: the fact that the released versions are non-anamorphic. This reason alone makes them worth while until the OOT is released digitally remastered, in anamorphic widescreen.

I think there a enough fan preservation projects that give us plenty of stuff Lucas didn't. Belbucus gave us the 35mm dolby stereo mix and the mono mix. The editdroid team gave us a beautiful 4 disc extras set with lots of stuff not normally available. Jambe davdar gave us building emipre and returning to jedi. And ofcourse everybody is waiting for the X0 project because the picture quality will be better than the GOUT. So, yes, I think the projects are valid.

I'd say preservation efforts are as important as the films that inspire the work. Since we're not any closer to getting one massive movie with everything in it, it comes down to the fan editors to bring their visions to life and show us different views on the movies. Fan preservations can introduce new ideas or enhance old ones without destroying the underlying foundations, or they can completely change the flow of the story and bring a different path. Without them, as has been said, there wouldn't be Deleted Magic, Building Empire or Returning to Jedi. We wouldn't have the X0 project or Adywan's hugely anticipated 2004 revisitation or a whole host of other edits out there. The movies have inspired a great deal of creativity - surely that's the underlying reason for producing fan edits or preservations?

The official DVDs can always be improved on...as many projects have shown already, there is a massive colour problem with the recent releases - even Episode III shows that the Tantive was supposed to be a pristine white, not a washed over blue!

Are there any efforts at the moment to simply change the GOUT to an anamorphic disk? This would be great!

Can I ask how the XO will beat the GOUT? Or even moreso, how it will beat an anamorphic "fixup" of the GOUT?

There are many reasons why laserdisc captures are still valid Preservation projects, even when the film has been released on DVD. Two examples: the pre-THX Star Wars laserdiscs don't exhibit DVNR side effects, the Thunderball laserdisc has more image and a different colour scheme.

There have been several discussions about creating Custom DVDs from the GOUT discs - improving the picture, converting to anamorphic, or adding alternative audio tracks.

It's the X0, not XO. If you are interested in the X0 project , you might want to check out the X0 thread.....
