I think he meant they were not radio ads but TV ads that he just recorded the audio for, not the video. But with the audio, we could compare that to the TV spots we already know about and see if they were different.

And Sluggo, your new signature quote is hilarious!

Widescreen video trailer, converted to NTSC, in XviD format for downloading:
http://s10.quicksharing.com/v/7629246/trailer.avi.html

Sorry about the quality; not only was the tape it came from in quite bad shape, but the source was dark, interlaced and noisy (sample frame). Perhaps someone has this on a tape that has not deteriorated so much?

Thanks, Moth3r... I have definitely never seen that one. I won't complain too much about the quality.

I think that trailer made the point for widescreen over pan & scan pretty well. Do you know the date for that? I didn't spot a date in the trailer itself.

Dotto on the thanks! I've been designing menus for the disc this month. The disc should be done by mid to late July.

Sluggo, do you have a list of your sources for each trailer you can e-mail me? I'm working on that myself on my end. I'd like to make sure that you're covered if I've got a better source for a particular trailer than you have.

The trailer is for the 1991 Special Widescreen Edition.

Reading the observation Russ made about the time stretching, that would explain why this trailer was interlaced. It looks like an NTSC video source was converted to PAL in such a way so that the audio remained unchanged. (This is why the file I uploaded sounds slightly low-pitched, I slowed it down to convert to NTSC).

As mentioned previously I had audio recordings of some Star Wars TV ads that ran on a Thursday ("Starts tomorrow") and Friday ("Now playing"), that I now believe date from 1978. (There's no date on the tape but it comes at the end of a record I dubbed late '77 / early '78). If they're later please let me know.

These were on a TDK SA cassette. I made a quick copy and posted an MP3 on this page:
http://www.4shared.com/dir/492929/6929802/sharing.html

Let me know if these are not already covered by the ads that have been catalogued, and I can get a CD of WAVs to whomever is in charge of the project.

They are funny to listen to, because the hokey narration was written by someone who didn't know the film (they think it's set in the future), and obviously didn't know what Mr. Lucas had in mind for his characters. ("From the moment he saw her face, he had to find her ... in danger, in love, in STAR WARS!").

Those are really cool. It is too bad that there isn't any video on those. David, I'd like to use those if you could send them my way. I'm at sluggo at wookiee dot com.

Well, the WAVs aren't so big (12-13MBs each) so I just uploaded them onto the same page.

Okay, I gave the audio a good listening and figured out what was what. These TV spots appear to be for the July 21, 1978 re-release of Star Wars. There are at least 7 of them, of which 4 are included (audio and video) on the official Bonus Materials DVD. However, the others we only have the audio for (thanks again, David!). Maybe someday the video will turn up as well. In the meantime, here's some details on the 7 spots:

Star Wars 1978 TV spots

Spot 1 "Farmboy" - 30 seconds:
Luke Skywalker was just a farmboy, until he received a mysterious message.
To rescue a beautiful princess.
And defend the forces of freedom against the Death Star.
The winner of 7 Academy Awards.
The legendary Star Wars.
Rated PG. Starts Friday at a theater near you.
(on Bonus Material DVD)
(also on Hyperspace, QuickTime format)

Spot 2 - 30 seconds:
This was how it all began.
Rated PG. Now playing/Starts tomorrow at a theater near you.
(audio only - David Morgands)

Spot 3 - "What If?" 30 seconds:
What if this were all happening right now?
What if Luke Skywalker were fighting against the Death Star?
And trying to rescue a princess?
What if you could go with them?
Well... you can.
Now/Tomorrow, at a theater near you: Star Wars, rated PG.
(on Bonus Material DVD)

Spot 4 - "Adventure" 30 seconds:
No legendary adventure of the past could be as exciting as Star Wars.
The more you see it, the better it gets.
Star Wars, rated PG. Now playing/Starts tomorrow at a theater near you.
(on Bonus Material DVD)

Spot 5 - 30 seconds:
Thrilling.
Beautiful.
Dangerous.
Adventurous.
And the more you see it, the better it gets.
Star Wars, rated PG. Now playing at a theater near you.
(audio only - David Morgands)

Spot 6 - "Forbidden Love" 30 seconds:
From the moment he saw her image, he had to find her.
Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.
In danger. In love. In Star Wars.
No legendary adventure of the past could be as exciting as this romance of the future.
Star Wars, rated PG. Now playing/Starts tomorrow at a theater near you.
(on Bonus Material DVD)

Spot 7 - 30 seconds:
Every great story has excitement and danger.
Romance and adventure.
Villains and heroes.
No matter where it happens, no matter when.
But there's never been a story like Star Wars.
And you can see it all tomorrow at a theater near you.
Star Wars, rated PG.
(audio only - David Morgands)

By the way, this is shaping up to be a great project. Considering how much deleted material is in some of these trailers, it will be nice to look at them all in one place.

Thanks! I'm liking the cut of its jib. Maybe I could talk someone on the site here to put together a small featurette of the cut scenes from the trailers. Kinda like what GG did for Deleted Magic, but with all six movies.

Sluggo, I've also pretty much finished up my listing of my trailer sources, which I'll e-mail you a copy of. Most of the trailers come from just 3 sources which you should have as well, with a handful of odds and ends out there. You may have some other sources that I don't, and I may have some hiding somewhere I'm unaware of (although I'm pretty sure I combed through everything worth checking). I think we can get at least decent quality on nearly all of them, luckily. I was afraid there might be a couple only found in horrible quality tiny-sized QuickTime files, but even those I think can now be found elsewhere on a DVD.

What about the Episode II Choices trailer that was an exclusive on the EP I DVD-Rom?

Was that the one with just a few still photos that faded in and out? I don't remember that being anything more than a flash movie. I'll put it on the disc if someone can get me a decent copy. Or even a re-creation.

The same. I guess it doesn't technically count as a trailer, per se. But it's a neat bit of movie marketing history.

Check the newsgroup alt.binaries.starwars

I made a request for it

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!
