ZigZig's THE PHANTOM MENACE Theatrical reconstruction 1080p – (V1.0 a WIP) — Page 3

Hi CarterStarkiller,

Thank you for your interest in this project. I’m still actively working on it (I found and scanned 35mm cells for each subtitle, so that I can now rotoscope those “original” subtitles instead of trying to make new ones).
The despecialization is almost done, I still have to regrade the colors.

Oh man, that’s awesome! Super excited for the final product.

Sounds great! Were you able to make use of the 35mm strip I got to you?

Awesome, I can’t wait! What will your regrade colors be based from?

I am honestly so excited about this. Probably more than Episode 9. Really been wanting to see this movie the way it was originally released. Don’t think I have since the VHS I had as a kid.

Good news may be coming soon!

Any hopes on a version being released possibly before celebration

How’s the project going? Will it be done for the 20th anniversary of TPM?

Hi CarterStarkiller,

The project is going well. It will take longer than expected, because I have the chance to use a forthcoming 4K format scan of the original 35mm, so I think it’s worth waiting a little more than expected.
So no, it will not be done for the 20th anniversary of the TPM. But in the end, there will be a 4K scan of the entire movie…

More news coming soon.

How have we gained access to the original negative?? If we do, then can someone for the love of Jaba get the OUT negs away from Lucasfilm.

It is obviously not the original negative, but a Kodak 2382 lowfade in very good condition.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Perhaps it is too early to answer this, but will there be a grindhouse release–with skip-frames, random dirt-spots, and reel-change cue marks?

Author

I honestly don’t know, I even don’t know if there are skip frames.

Yes, and it is probably the good date to officialy announce that a scan in 4K, based on a 35mm in very good condition, is currently in progress.
And it will be done twice 😃

  • a first scan (in 4K) will be processed as soon as possibly by a Parisian lab, so that I can use it to finish my ongoing despecialized edition
  • then the reels will be shared with some people from OT (I don’t know if I can name them), and a second scan will be processed with the best available scanner.

I received a few days ago from the lab in Paris a first test scan of reel 4 (made with a simple 720p scan), just to analyze the average condition of the reel before scanning it with a brand new 4K scanner. The lab scanned the entire reel… in 25 fps (the French standard) so it is not currently usable (there are ghosting artefacts and interpolated frames). Damn French people, always thinking that the world needs their own standards!

But It looks just gorgeous, even in 25 fps: the reel is in PERFECT condition, it looks like it was never projected before, the colors are perfectly preserved. The lab made NO correction at all (white balance, DNR or something else) and the rough result is astonishingly good.

The 4K scan will be obviously done in 24 fps, can’t wait to get it 😊

Happy birthday to TPM!

(JEDIT: I’ll make a new post to discuss about the scan, and keep this post about the forthcoming despecialized edition)

Well, this is certainly intriguing. Definitely great news. Thanks for spending so much time and effort on preserving this movie!
