Is anyone interested in making a Snyder LUT for the theatrical version?

I don’t know how to make a LUT to be honest but I do have a “Batman v Superman” LUT that was made from this company called Triune Digital.

I wonder if that could possibly do the trick (I’m assuming there would have to be some tweaking to it as well).

I think the Snyder cut is a whole new colour grade than previously used? I can’t say I’m a big fan of DC movies so I’ve only seen them once.

I’m just watching the original and thinking an overlay could be used in some 16:9 scenes. It’s weird how some scenes have extra bits in 16:9 while others are cropped and vice versa with 4:3. This cut may be more interesting than I first thought.

I wish this movie wasn’t a team up movie and an origin story mashed into one movie, but because that can’t be changed i would let all the backstory stuff untouched.

  • Cut EVERYTHING with Amber Heard.

  • Tweak some of the slo-mo shots and remove some.

  • Cut Martian Manhunter out, keep the Lois scene, just not the transformation scene.

  • i dont think there are any scenes from the theatrical cut that i would use, they look like something from the CW channel.

What, no Turkey?!

Iirc, the theatrical cut does do a better job of setting up that Superman might attack them after he gets resurrected.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

I think I’d cut a lot of the introduction and most of the epilogue. Just off the top of my head:

-Cut out the terrorist attack where Wonder Woman comes and saves the kids, unless you’re going to return that sequence as the intro. Otherwise, it basically has nothing to do with the rest of the plot in this version, and we get another introduction with her in both the revised intro and the museum.

-Focus more on the Amazons throughout the introduction, minimizing the cutaways away from them until after the Steppenwolf attack & arrow launch. This likely means cutting the sailor rescue and moving around the placement of Batman’s attempted recruiting of Aquaman to where his scene with the Atlanteans takes place.

-From there, follow Diana & later Bruce until we meet Cyborg. If possible, move the flashbacks forward for Cyborg until the grave scene when he’s looking at the photo of his mother, only revealing before that his strained relationship with his father and that he owns a Mother Box. From there, continue on with Cyborg’s story, until he buries the Mother Box.

-Remove all the chapter stops, and replace with an intermission around the 1hr30 mark. After the intermission, we get the scene with Flash and the girl, introducing Flash. We follow him through the prison scene and Batman meets him in the warehouse.

-Split the conversation between Martha and Lois into two, one in which they talk about her losing the farm and how much they miss Clark and a second where Martha exclusively talks about the Daily Planet and Lois needing to get back to her life. (Use the Snyder Cut footage for both of these.) Use the door and the transformation sequence of Martian Manhunter on the second conversation to imply he was specifically trying to manipulate her into doing this.

-Move the Knightmare and Martian Manhunter reveal sequences to credit stingers, possibly leaving it with three if you also want to add the Lex Luthor/Deathstroke reveal in there as well.

As someone who dislikes most Snyder films with a passion (Watchmen completetly butchered the source material and Batman v Superman was a joyless mess, Legend of the Guardians was passable, though) this was an alright watching experience. It is far superior to the theatrical release for sure: No digital mustache-removal makes it 90% better alone and while I’m not against a brighter look in general, the color-grading felt really tacked on in the 2017 version. I even like the new 4:3 aspect ratio. A more zoomed in 16:9 version might be too close for some, if not most, action-heavy scenes. But also some of the quieter stuff does benefit from more visual breathing space, imo. It’s a trade-off (I don’t have an IMAX theater in my living room, so black borders left and right), but not necessarily a bad one.

That said, even if I grant Snyder his general excentricities (it wouldn’t be a Snyder-cut without them), this movie still feels unnecessarily bloated. That ending, or rather the third and the fourth ending, are both pointless and Batman’s Joker dream is just terrible and ugly on top of that.

So that’s an easy improvement right there: Either cut the whole epilogue (if you want to have an even shorter, more streamlined cut) or cut everything after Cyborg’s daddy stops monologuing and Superman gets “ready”. No Luthor, no Joker means less cringe! This saves at least 13 minutes.

I also agree that the whole Wonder Woman terrorists-scene should go, as it barely serves a purpose. There is already a lot of Amazon-action in the first third. These scenes would stand out even more with this distraction removed.

Auqaman saving the fisherman is an okay sequence on its own (though the slo-mo music clip with him drinking his booze is a bit jarring), but it is pretty superfluous and should therefore be cut as well.

Having Martha Kent transforming into Martian Manhunter undermines the whole dialogue that came before it. Just leave him out of this movie. The dialogue itself could stay.

Cut all the visions/nightmares.

There are also some smaller moments and details that feel like overkill, even for Snyder. Like when Gordon looks at Batman at around 1:51, there are at least two or three cuts to different angles of Batman posing (right before he poses again with the whole gang) that feel redundant.

There’s probably more, but for now that’ll do.

edit: Fuck product placement! The “I’m rich!” line is okay, but certainly not good enough to justify leaving that car commercial in the film. Just awful. And other close-ups of car-logos or razorblades should be cut or toned down, too.

The first thing I would do is cut everything that is only there to tease a future film that is never going to happen: Martian Manhunter, Lex Luthor and Deathstroke, the Knightmare sequence etc.

Then I would focus on making small cuts here and there for pacing, and reintegrating some small bits from the Whedon version that work. I think there’s a great 3ish hour cut of this film.

I’ve never watched any DC movies, but I’ve got a passing interest in this. Has any thought been given to the idea of breaking this down into TV-length chunks? That way it’s a bit more natural if it’s both an origin story and a team-up story. Perhaps it could work as a few 45-60 minute episodes?

You’re really missing out: Superman, Superman II, Batman, Batman Returns, Mask of the Phantasm - you can’t go wrong with DC!.. Wait, what year is it again?

(Shazam! is actually pretty good. But don’t tell anyone!)

I will also go to bat (hehe) for Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Birds of Prey as well.

I’ll grant you Aquaman: It’s stupid, but the good kind of stupid!

I agree that Aquaman is watchable but any DC after dark knight was pretty gash. I couldn’t even get through the theatrical justice league or BvS, same with birds of prey and Wonder woman. Someone saved BvS with a no lex cut but the others cant even be saved in edit, imo.

The Lego Batman Movie is pretty good. Sadly, it’s probably one of the best of DC’s last eight years of movies.

I also think a lot of the slo mo scenes can be trimmed as a lot of them go on way too long and get kind of annoying after a while. Definitely cut the Aquaman choir and the Wonder Woman arrow plot. Cutting the first Manhunter appearance might be good too. I don’t know if I would want any Whedon content in the movie on principle but some scenes might work. Cropping to fit the entire screen would be a good middle ground for aspect ratios too.

I agree on The Lego Batman Movie - most recent animated DC movies are pretty bland, so it is a breath of fresh air for sure. (Even though I just complained about product placement earlier, I’m somehow fine with a 100 min LEGO-commercial. Go figure.).

I’m on the fence about the Aquaman-worshipping. It is certainly cringy (that woman sniffing his wool pullover…). But in a weird way it also adds personality to the movie. It’s one of those Snyder-isms I’m willing to tolerate.

ed: The arrow-scenes didn’t bother me. I think they’re fine.

I am thoroughly happy with the Snyder cut and I don’t really need any edit to “fix” it. That being said, this movie just gives us everything to play with and I can see some fun edits coming out of it. I definitely am all for a “theatrical cut” of this movie with a more traditional aspect ratio and a trimmed runtime.

That being said, the idea in my mind has been to try and make a Justice League origins trilogy out of BVS and this. It would go something like this:

Superman: Darkest Knight

This would essentially be a trimmed down BVS. Remove all the dream sequences, including the Knightmare which has always seemed too jarring when placed with this movie. I would also cut Africa entirely, and make the Superman controversy surround the carnage from Man of Steel. I would also want Superman to more closely resemble the symbol of hope that Justice League treats him as, which probably just means cutting the hell out of his scenes in this movie. No “consider this mercy”, “the bat is dead”, speeches about the earth and how he doesn’t want to defend it. Essentially keep Clark being sad about how the world is reacting to him, and keep his plot about researching Batman. Cut down Batman straight up murdering guys, and have him be 100% devoid of dialogue in the Superman fight. He is trying to kill Superman out of necessity to save the earth, and the smack talk just humanized Superman, which is something Batman is trying to do the opposite of. No Martha moment, but Lois showing up makes Bruce feel like Joe Chill, and puts him back in perspective. Remove Justice League bait to credits scene. Also, generally trim Lex’s many plans to streamline it a bit.

Dawn of Justice

This is the first 4 parts of the Justice League Snyder Cut. I like everything here, but it could probably bare to be restructured a bit to keep the excitement going. This climaxes with the decision to resurrect Superman with the great musical swell at the end of episode 4. The post credits can be a Darkseid tease. Cut the awful Martian Manhunter reveal at the apartment and just let it be Martha. I would reinstate some small bits of Josstice that I liked, such as the “wind up Penguins” bit with Bruce and Alfred, Flash checking out the Batcave (which looks amazing in the DCEU but never really gets lingered on), and the fallout of the Gotham Harbor fight where we get a little extra Gordon that wasn’t in the Snyder Cut.

The Justice League

This is the latter half of Justice League, with some additions. You can cold open the movie with the Knightmare sequence from BVS, up to the point that Batman gets KO’d by a parademon. Then you can utilize the scene of Bruce waking up from his nightmare in bed from BVS. After that, use the “everybody knows” montage from Josstice League, as it was a solid open and fits well as we are starting this movie with the focus on resurrecting Superman. Afterwards, we cut back to the continued conversation that ended our Dawn of Justice. Yet again, we use some Josstice League to reinstate Wonder Woman questioning Superman’s resurrection, and the big argument that ensues. We can also throw Diana and Bruce’s one on one from Josstice League back in, as that was one of the few genuinely good added moments from that cut. The rest of the Knightmare from BVS with Batman getting killed by Superman can be added into the flash forward that happens with Cyborg later. I would also reinstate the pre final battle conversation from Josstice League with the lasso bit for Aquaman, as that was some fun banter that further added some character to everyone. I would also have Superman’s suit be Blue for the final reveal shot at the end of the film. Move the Joker Knightmare/Manhunter reveal to mid credits and the Deathstroke scene to post credits.

Author

Damn, Dexter… That’s a great idea!

The only thing I would add is maybe find a way to combine MOS and BVS for that first movie. I know there’s been fan edits out there that have done that.

Then we can have a concise trilogy for Snyder’s movies. 😃

For me keep the aspect ratio, and just trim down the epilogue and remove mentions of Bruce’s dreams.

Ah, finally a fellow 4:3 defender! These changes would definitely be my top priorities and for a conservative fanedit (that would please even hardcore fans) those would probably suffice.

Here’s a potential timeline for the opening act to a three hour cut

Reveal message
-Open the movie with Lois in mourning, fetching her coffe, visiting Clark’s memorial, segues into Diana’s mission to thwart the bombing.

-Steppenwolf seizes the first Motherbox, Amazons discussing sending the arrow to Diana, but we don’t need to see it shot and land or Diana discovering the all too convenient shrine to Darksied. She relays all necessary information to Bruce later.

-Bruce dreams of Knightmare Superman only, wakes up, and is visited by Martian Manhunter, who offers to help, this provides better motivation for why he helps Lois out as ‘Martha’ later, doing his own small part, and it also enables Bruce to become more aware that an invasion is immanent rather than the gut feeling he has.

-End the prologue with Diana and Bruce discussing Darksied and Diana asking where the others are

-Begin Chapter One: “Don’t Count on It Batman”

Throw me into this camp, too. In most cases I’d prefer my bars on the top, but it worked for JL and BVS. It feels as though the films were meant to be shown that way, and the picture looks more exciting and fixes Snyders problem of shooting so close in many cases. I thought the JL we got in full-screen looked awful, and the aspect ratio was part of the visual improvement
