Your first reaction to Hayden is ROTJ — Page 7

What could I do but shrug and say - once again - "They messed up."

You could have been a little more explicit, such as: "They weren't very careful with continuity problems when they made the prequels."  And you could even explain what continuity is, how there's people whose job is to maintain continuity, and how there was actually no continuity problem with this scene until they made the prequels.

But yeah, they messed up a lot of things in the prequels, not just continuity.  Oh well, your kid's pretty astute to pick up on things like that.

I know this sound crazy, but since I was born in 1999, I grew up with the Special Edition of the Original Trilogy. I watched episodes 4, 5, and 6 thinking these were the original theatrical versions that have no changes whatsoever. You won't believe how mad I was when I found out I was growing up in a lie. I desperately want to see the original unaltered trilogy commercially released because I never got the chance. When I saw the end of ROTJ on the 2004 DVDs and saw Hayden Christensen, I already questioned it even though I was eight years old. I knew that Hayden Christensen was the one who played Anakin in Episodes 2 and 3. But I also knew that the Original Trilogy films were released years and years before the prequels. I wondered how they could get Christensen in there when he was probably was a sperm at the time. I then figured out Sebastion Shaw was the original man that was standing there. It pissed me off how easily I believed that the three movies I've been watching were full of unfair and cruel lies. Don't get me started on Greedo shooting first.

I never said they messed up with continuity in the prequels. And thanks for the tips on how to speak to my son and your condescension towards him, catbus. What's the phrase? "Thanks for giving me a piece of your mind, considering how little you had to begin with."

The fact that you didn't say it was kinda my point, because the very problem your son pointed out was in fact a continuity problem in the prequels, even though the scene revealing the continuity problem was in ROTJ.  I was fully aware you did not realize this fact yourself.

And thanks for the tips on how to speak to my son and your condescension towards him, catbus.

I called your son "astute", which is a compliment (feel free to verify this, I'll wait).  The condescension, on the other hand, was not aimed at him at all.

I know what astute means. I just don't like catbus's attitude or the way he puts himself across. His latest post does nothing to alter that impression and I doubt he'll be making any efforts in the future to change that.

Funny, though, how many big talkers one runs into on internet forums - they never seem so brave when someone squares up to them in a bar.

This post is almost as funny as the thread title.

I think 1997 ending was perfect.

I just can't describe the disappointment I felt when I first saw that Shaw was replaced by Hayden. It is hands down, by far the worst change Lucas ever made. Hell, I would go as far to say that it is the worst thing Lucas did in his entire career.

Worse than The Star Wars Holiday special?

Worse than Jar Jar Binks or Howard the Duck.  Worse than Indiana Jones riding through the air for 5 miles in a nuked fridge. Worse than Hayden Christensen's atrocious bad acting as Skywalker/Vader?

Yes. At least I don't care for those things.

Alderaan shooting first is the worst IMO.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I dunno, for me it's about even with Luke biting the Rancor first.

This is what exactly happen on the day when I bought the 2004 Special Editions (it was the day the SE's came out).

I get to the end of Jedi. I think to myself, "Well Shaw will on screen in a few minutes." A few minutes go by. "He's coming. Almost there." I see Anakin and I jump up and yelled "WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!! WHO'S THIS GUY!!!! DID SOMEONE SNEAK THEIR FACE ONTO THE FINAL SE PRINT AS A JOKE TO LUCAS?!?! ... WAIT IT'S THAT HAYDEN DUDE!" I still watch the SE, but it always looks like Hayden is grinning. Shaw was smiling. Was Hayden actually trying to say "Fuck you Shaw, this is my ending!"

It ruined one of the most powerful lessons of the series.  The ghost of Old Anakin symbolized that while he could not undo the many terrible things he had done, he could still make amends and seek forgiveness.  Old Anakin symbolized a wasted lifetime.  Hayden's ghost basically gives the character a free pass.  Plus, Old Anakin fits with what we had just seen in the movie - a tired old man trapped in an iron lung, desperately wanting to get out.  Now, in death, he has his release.  The notion that his ghost can just "go back" makes no sense, literally or metaphorically.

This is absolutely word for word perfect.

Hayden looks like he's eyeing Leia. His face tells a disturbing story of molestation and rape.

So, all in all, he's the icing on the cake. If the icing is made out of blood and bitter tears.

I thought... "this isn't the way I remember it".

Frankly, of all the alterations, ROTJ has come out the worst, by far! I mean, when the "Jedi Rock" bit came on I was like "MAKE IT STOP!!!!!! MY FACE HURTS!!!!!!!" And all the rest of those new things!

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

A good argument for keeping Sebastian Shaw entails the following 2 points.

a) The other ghosts are the characters as they appeared at the end of their life, otherwise why not have them be Ewan McGregor and CGI Yoda?

b) One can view the original trilogy and pretend that the prequels have yet to be made and are always about year away, reliving that pre-1999 anticipation forever and ever.

At that point I had seen the other changes to the original movies, so it was just another reminder that Lucas hated what made him so successful and changes things just for the sake of his new babies, the prequels.

I remember TESB Leia having her hair done up in buns the first time I watched the movie, and Luke having a blue lightsaber in ROTJ (I think the tint on the TV was skewed, though, so that accounts for that).

Having seen the prequels recently, I actually thought "Hey, they did a very good job castng that guy! He looks just like young Anakin!". Then one of my roommate told me about the SEs and since then, I had only one thought in mind: finding the theatrical versions.
