from a story telling point of view, which is how I usually view these movies anyways, Empire takes the cake. Empire fleshed out the characters and made them seem very much like people we could come in contact with minus all the costumes and lightsabers and breathing masks. The personallities seemed as such that I could know someone like that. Irvan did an awesome job giving the story a real depth and graininess. The original follows very closely. Yes, it did introduce the characters, I'll give you that, but something about them was a little unrealistic personality-wise. Overall, I like the OT because the acting and the stories flow alot better than they did in the prequels. Also, something you don't see in the prequels are moments that I call "breathers" these are breif moments where the film rests a bit to allow the audience some peace and so they can digest everything thus far. ROTS was close on this count but not close enough.

you make a good point about the no breathers, the prequels are messed up for that reason alone

The very first one was the best one, because it relied more on good acting and surprising things than special effects, and the characters were fresh and brand new. The prequels down later had very cool special effects, but the acting was atrocious (Samuel Jackson just basically waltzed his way through his role as if he learned his lines on the fly.)

But the 3rd one (where Luke becomes a Jedi and frees Han and destroys Jaba the Hut's stronghold…that was awesome too, because we got to see how Darth at the end found his inner Annakin and helped Luke defeat the evil emperor. Luke was like Jesus in his faith that Darth was good.

ESB is my favorite from the original trilogy, but not by too much. I love ANH, and ROTJ too.

I liked ROTS the best of the prequels. The other two prequels I have mixed feelings.

My favourite Star Wars movie is a heavily degraded VHS copy of TESB (SE '97) played backwards at high speed.
