Yep. The movie is going back into print, and they're celebrating with theatrical screenings all across the US! You know I'll be there for sure tomorrow, haha.

A casual warning to the purists (you know who you are), I would imagine that they are digital projections.

I saw this in the theater during it's 1990's re-release. Lot's of fun seeing it with a bunch of fellow fans, and the surround mix of "Only A Northern Song" blew my mind. Enjoy!

Not in REAL3DIMAX (actually that might be one film where it might work).

^I think a 3D Yellow Submarine conversion if handled with care would be crazy as the ball scale. I'd see it.

The Robert Zemeckis remake is apparently dead in the water, so that may be one reason the original is finally coming out on Blu.

Will be interested to see if the footage replaced by "Hey Bulldog" shows up, if only as an extra. No sign of it in the announced disc specs though.

The disc has nice casing but there's only one of them. That worries me. If it's only bare bones I'll be upset... though, given the price, I guess I can't complain.

From what I've read over at the HTF, it looks like all the DVD extras are being ported over. With the possible exception of the music only track.

^ :(! Isolated sountracks are always a plus... oh well I suppose. I own the album, I guess that's more important.

I'll only watch it if it uses DTS for the audio. DTS > Dolby

Yellow Submarine is one of only two movies I've ever rated a perfect 10/10, but I haven't watched it since 2007 or so; I really should see it again to see how I'd feel about it now.

Kev, you are my hero.  I would never known about this if not for you.

I saw a little bit of this on the big screen once, as they were showing it before Star Wars at The Senator screening in Baltimore, just until it was time to get on with the real show. Needless to say, the biggest the image, the trippier.

Why was the Hey Bulldog bit cut out of the US print?? Some kind of lame MPAA thing??

^We... don't know. We just don't know. I think it probably was for time, something about us kids having no attention span on our side of the world. I personally find it a bit superflous myself actually; I'm hoping that, at the least, the alternate scene will be available in the extras.

Sat in the front. 5.1 mixes really need to be optimized for the theater and not the home. I was in the front row, and "All Together Now" sounded just atrocious. The background singers were to the right, and then the Beatles came in on the center - it was an awkward cut. I could still here the background singers (I think just a different track of the Beatles) when they switched it to center. The real nail in the coffin was that I couldn't hear Nowhere Man's lyrics! Literally, they were in an echo, and the instrumental was coming out right center. Needless to say I'll be sticking to the 2.0 and mono tracks on the DVD!

I also think that it was a bit out of focus for a digital projection. There was... ghosting, I think. Unless that's normal in animation and I don't normally notice it. And the shadows often looked like blurs on screen.

Do I regret going? No. I just wish the presentation was more ... pleasing.

Why did you sit in the front? Any listening space has a "sweet spot". In a theater, it's where your eyes are level with the middle of the screen. That's where the room reflections are minimal and speaker balance is best. Too close to the front, you're getting reflections bouncing off the big screen.

I just thought it would be fun to sit that close to the screen with Yellow Submarine because I am an immature 18 year old who likes occasional cheap thrills. Still, I don't think I should have been barely able to hear the lyrics - even in a situation like that.

^Let us know how it goes! I'm curious to see if I just went to the wrong theater, what with the whole "Nowhere Man" issue haha. I don't think there's any way another theater could fix "All Together Now" though, that was a mess... which is weird because it was fine when they played it at the end! Just not the first time around.

Well, the problem is, and I hate to admit this, but it's been so long since I've seen Yellow Submarine that I would have no idea what sounded right or not.  In fact, I probably haven't seen it since I was 3 or 4 years old, long before I officially became a Beatles fan.  But I will try to let you know.

Alright, I'm back.  "Nowhere Man" sounded perfectly fine to me, Kev, so I guess it was just you.  And, actually, so did "All Together Now."  Well, at least the first one did, but I'll get to that in a moment...

Mine did have a slew of problems, though.  At first I thought it wasn't going to play at all.  The opening narration started, but the screen was black.  Then, about a sentence it, it stopped entirely.  This sequence repeated a few times before we got a single image of a Pepperland inhabitant.  And then finally it started up properly.

I did eventually become aware that the audio for the entire film was a bit out of sync.  I honestly didn't notice it until near the end, due to the animation style and the sparsity of dialogue anyway.  I only really noticed when Glove started pounding things at the end, and the sound for it was about half a second late.  But I still wondered if maybe it was just supposed to be like that until The Beatles made their cameo at the end, and their lip flaps didn't match up at all.  So that was a bit disappointing, but nowhere near as disappointing as when the second "All Together Now" started playing... and the theatre cut the audio halfway through in an attempt to get us out faster so they could set up one of a million other showings of The Avengers.  Needless to say, everyone booed.  Not that that was terribly impressive as there was less than two dozen people there sadly.

You're making me glad I didn't go today. These sorts of special screenings seem to have so many technical screwups, it's not worth the cost to go if it's two towns over for me.

The local revival house showed a print a few years back, maybe they'll get it again someday.
