Glad your gig went well. Sorry, my computer's been dead all week, otherwise I would have said so sooner.

Good show, Yoda. Good luck on future shows.

Thanks guys. Hopefully there will be more - I just need to get over my self doubt and chase my dream (this gig landed on my lap and I almost turned it down).

Maybe someday you guys can come - I'll get you on the list

Well, if I ever finish college, I'll probably be heading out that way, so get the list ready.

I never opened this thread before today as I thought it had something to do with a card game my grandparents played.

YIYF, maybe retitling it to "Completely random ongoing conversation thread" would make it clearer to yanks such as meself.

Nah, come on. It's been around far too long to change now. It's become a staple of the boards (even though I thought the same thing when I first saw it).

The name goes back to a completely random discussion Chaltab, Ric and myself were having about the world's longest bridge in a thread completely unrelated to bridges. Great ideas are born from neccesity and we decided we needed a thread to use when we went off topic and didn't want to derail an existing thread or start a new one.

I admit the name has the potential to cause confusion, but hopefully by communicating with our fellow forum members and spreading the word we can get around the problem.

I remember the largest bridges discussion. But it seems to me that the biggest off-off topic... uh... topic, would be the pizza stone issue.

I agree that the name is not really self-describing, but I like it this way, I wouldn't like it to be changed.

Ah! See, I always thought it was a reference to the card game and how people can have fun random conversations while playing cards. Now I feel enlightened.

Just mentioning something at random here, since this IS the YIYF's long bridge club... There was this terrible air accident this friday, a plane coming from Manaus, a city at the north of the country, in the middle of the amazon, going to Brasilia (the capital, at the center of the country) had a mid-air colision with a Legacy air jet, severily damaging the 737-800 (which was delivered by Boeing a couple of weeks ago) and crashed almost horizonatally into the middle of the forest, killing 155 people among passengers and crew. The Legacy jet, with about 7 people aboard, was able to safely land in a nearby airport. The Legacy, which had 6 americans (including a New York Times reporter and the two pilots) and 1 brazillian was going back to the United States. They were flying on an unauthorized path and turned off some of the equipaments which showed their radar position and planes nearby so they could fly above their approved altitute.

What makes me angry is that this accident was absolutely avoidable, caused by the ignorance of the pilots (which were doing a demonstration to possible buyers and to the reporter who was doing a story on the airplane) and it happened for an air company I always fly with in and support, which had a 100% safety record until now. My praiers go to the families and to the 155 who perished

Yeah, me too. I had never had any desire to look in here before, I even absent mindedly wondered why it was always at the top of the thread list too, thinking how odd it was so many people here had interest in a stupid card game.

I just read the above post after I posted mine. That is sad to hear.

They were doing a selling demonstration to some people on the plane, plus there was a reporter doing a story on that particular plane, the brazillian on board was from the air company that manufacturers that jet, so I supposed he wanted to show how high it could go or something and ordered the pilots to do so.

Is that for real? You apply it directly on your head? Why not take some aspirins or tylenol?

I've done some research, and I've found out that this headon thing is merely a placebo.

Now, back to the airplane crash situation. After some brief investigations, it is known that the american pilots piloting the Legacy jet were on a unspecified altitute (37 feet, when the tower clearly specified an even numbered altitute for the Legacy, either 36 or 38 thousand feet). At a certain point, the pilots ignored this, and turned off some instruments so the ground personal and the towers wouldn't be able to see what they were doing. Unfortunally, this also caused for the jet not be properly located by the Boeing instruments. The 737-800 pilot was able to see the Legacy jet for a fraction of a second before impact, and rapidly climbed, saving the lifes of the 7 people aboard the jet, but he was not able to save his own, and the other 154 people aboard the 737-800. The Gol Boeing airplane was hit badly, started to fall vertically and got into supersonic speeds, the fuselage desintegrated in the air and people were thrown out into the air out of distances of 20 km. Some hit the ground alive. Some fell into the air in small pieces.

The "The New York Times" reporter aboard the airplane wrote an article about the crash, saying how sorry everyone felt about it, and CLEARLY showing that he knew the altitute, as he claimed to be able to see the altimeter some minutes before the two planes colided. SADLY, giving an interview to NBC, he changed his mind. He said he had no idea what was the altitue of the airplane, but he said he was pretty sure the Legacy jet was right and the Boeing was wrong, and he claimed the fault to be of the tower control. He, in no moment during the interview, showed any remorse or regret, and never mentioned the people who died. He claimed, more than once, that our country's air controllers are incompetent, that it was their fault, that Brazil is a dangerous place to fly, and that he was afraid about the fate of the american pilots.

It is absolutely unfortunate that he decided to blame the ground control, seeing that it was OBVIOUSLY not the case. We have radar control over ALL the country's airspace, mostly due to territorial protection (long story). The average of accidents per million take offs are 0.8, zero point eight at Brazil, way below the world average of 1.25. I hate a lot of things about this country, but when someone decides to badmouth us and LIE in a national television network, that makes me pissed. He obviously dosen't care about the 155 people killed.

Genuine concern from the New York Times? You over-estimate them Ric.

This whole affair is just one of those things that makes you feel so disgusted to be part of the same species. I know nobody intended for this to happen, but to allow it based on nothing but greed and arrogance so ridiculous you'd think Moff Tarkin was the captain of the plane... and then the journalist blames Brazil's towers for it.

Screw them.
