So, is American interest in Soccer a sudden thing, or has this been building for a while? There have been jokes for decades about the U.S. not comprehending the game, a certain Simpsons episode being a good example.

There certainly are a good number of Soccer fans in 'Merica, but the nation itself doesn't care too much about it unless it's the World Cup. At least, that's how I've observed my people behaving over the last couple decades.

Congrats to Costa Rica and Uruguay for reaching the knockout stages - hope they do well.
England managing to lower expectations under the Hodge quite nicely. Roy thinks we 'should take encouragement that we dominated the Costa Rican midfield' (ignoring that they'd already qualified and didn't look too arsed). I'd rather have taken encouragement from qualifying from the group stage (and anything after that being a bonus under the Hodge).
The Italian manager Prandelli has resigned - respect to him. Some managers take responsibility for their campaigns - give the next bloke a chance etc.

well we lost the game, but it seems that we still advanced. I guess the 2 top finishers in each group advances or something like that. Would have been nice if we had atleast tied Germany. I'm enjoying the U.S. holding on longer in a game we're widely regarded as not caring about than certain other countries that care about it almost exclusively. It feels great. I hope we go all the way.
To answer Wook's question, I really do think the US is caring a lot more this year than others. Or at least I'm more exposed to news about it. Either way, I'm enjoying it.
