Idea: Wing Commander III & IV cut scene footage - plus other bits wanted.

I’m not entirely sure if this should go in here or other since this concerns video game footage.
Anyway, I’ve been browsing various Wing Commander sites and have been reading up on all the cut scene footage thay shot for both video games with actors such as Mark Hamill, John Rhys-Davies, Malcolm McDowell, Thomas F. Wilson and many others. I’m also interested in seeing the outtakes/behind-the-scenes footage from both games including Wing Commander V: Prophecy (forgot to include that one in the message title) via extracting them and putting them to a DVD-R if need be. Also the making-of CD-ROM from WC III would be the proverbial icing on the cake. Trust me, if I had access to the games and the CD-ROM I’d have already been done with this project and have been more than eager to share the duties.

Hi,

I HAVE Wing Commander III, and Prophecy. I'll see what I can do for you.

And now that I think about it, one of the DUNE Games I have (II or 2000) has cut scene footage with John Rhys-Davies in it.

Thank you kindly.
I do have Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II and curious as to how I should go about extracting the cut scenes from that. Should I go 'explore CD'? Any help will be most appreciated.

EDIT: I forgot to mention I have the 4-disc 1997 Blade Runner video game for PC and will see what I can do to extract stuff from it if it's possible...

The DFII scenes are one of the few that can be easily accessed from the cds. I already have these on dvd, and another forum user is putting together a proper dvd presentation

Try to get your hands on the DVD-version of WC4 (floats around eBay from time to time), it has every cutscene as a separate VOB-file on it (in DVD-quality). There's also another DVD-version of the game, which simply has the 6 CDs put together... don't get that one.

Oh, and a lot of other stuff (outtakes, deleted scenes, making ofs) can be found in the media section of http://www.wcnews.com/

A few months ago, I cut together all of the WC4 DVD version footage to get one almost 3-hour-movie. As they are numerous pathes the story can take and as many conversations, your character participates in, have two different endings (depending what you chose), I decided to make 4 different versions of a WC4 movie. In the end I had 4 DVDs, each with a different cut. Of course, someone who has never played the game will miss some of the important story developments which originally happened during the in-game flight sequences. Also the movie includes all of the mission briefings but none of the missions itself. So the scenes jump from mission briefings to scenes which happened after the missions.

I also started cutting together the WC3 movie files. I can tell you, this is a much more challenging work, because of the way the movies are stored on the CD. I already have all of the video ripped from the CD and cut together to single scenes. You seem after you have ripped the video with a special tool (available at wcnews.com), you get hundreds (if not thousands) of small video segments (every shot (camera angle change)) is one segment. I'm so far, that I cut those together to whole scenes. But I didn't finish planning how to cut those scenes together, because the motivation for me wasn't there anymore. You see, the WC3 footage is really low quality and wouldn't be enjoyable on a TV screen. I think it would only be watchable as a avi file in a small Media Player window box on the PC.
The same goes for Prophecy. Also for Prophecy an added problem is, that most of the story is told in the mission briefings, and those aren't filmed sequences anymore in that game. So you would get a totally incomprehensible collection of video clips cut together.

I'd like these cutscenes on DVD. The WC4 edit sounds good. PM me.

Too bad about WC3/Prophecy, as I'd rather like to see those scenes cut together as well.

I have this device that lets you record any game/computer program to DV codec. I should load them up again on my win-95 CPU and record all the missions so that they can be spliced in.

Cool. What is the format? I believe it's BinkVideo, no?

i'd also like to have all the making of footage, deleted scenes, movie scenes on dvd of wing commander III, IV and prophecy. I've been looking for the soundtracks and screenplays for years also, a huge fan of the wing commander series with mark hamill.

there is extra footage in one version of prophecy but i don't know which one, there are two versions of the game. Are there any aternate endings? the only one i've seen is the supposed death of commodore christopher blair but was pretty open ended. too bad no sequel to show what happened. the creator of the game was inspired by both star wars and star trek. The killrathi are like a hybrid of wookiee's and klingons although they are tigerlike. Of course blair "hamill" bombing and destruction of killrath homeword by hitting it's weak point at the planets core casing a chain reaction both had echos of the bombing of japan world war II and luke's destruction of the death star in star wars.

You know it might be possible to take the in-cockpit dialog and edit it into new cg dog fight/space battle cutscenes. Since its all space stuff it shouldn't be too hard...no character animation, etc. Not to mention if you wanted to have the cg consitent with the prexisting game cg cut scenes which are pretty primative campared to "modern" standards. You could actually make a full blown movie. I too was big WC back in the day It'd be an interesting project...

How do you tell the difference? Theres one on Ebay right now and I might pick it up if it has dvd quality footage

The one with DVD quality is a dual-sided single-layered DVD (DVD-10), whereas the lower quality version is DVD-9 (single-sided, dual-layered).

Although the item title says DVD, the description says that it's 6 CDs. Plus, the packaging looks like from the CD-version, because the DVD-video-version comes in a simple cardboard slipbag, without manuals or a box. (it was part of the Creative Labs' "Encore DX3" DVD-decoder card, although by now a patch has been created by fans, to play the DVD-version under XP without the hardware).

I'm still very interested in this. Just that I haven't been posting recently. So, if anyone is working on this and could send me the final results it'd be greatly appreciated.

I'm really big on the idea of doing something like this, but I don't have either game. Ordered the IV DVD, turned out to be bunk, never got the thing GRUARGH.

Can anyone send me cutscenes from either game? Both'd be spectacular but anyway. There's probably no way we could do this over the internet, what with the filesizes concerned.... hmmm. Unfortunately, not a big fan of postage, living in Australia and everything.
