Have any of you actually seen the movie?

If not, then STFU and go see it. Then, and only then, can you pass judgement.

Don't judge a book by its cover or an actor by his looks.

That comment was mostly directed toward Warb.

I just saw it last night.

It had a lot of promise and there were parts that were good and a lot that made you roll your eyes. It wasn't a terrible, terrible movie, but it's not a classic either. I feel like in 20 years, we'll remember this movie like people remember the King Kong remake.

For me, it wasn't a straight adaptation of the book. It was Tim Burton's view of the book. I can't accept the argument that this one is closer to the book because apart from a few minute differences, it basically tells the same story. The Gene Wilder version is not so alien from the book: it's not like how Stanley Kubrick went 180 when making his adaptation of The Shining.

The one thing that killed the movie was that idiotic backstory (which WASN'T in the book for all you adaptation fanatics). It killed the pacing of the film, it weakened the mysticism that is the character Willy Wonka, and it just ruined the ending.

But I did like the Oompa Loompa songs if only because I like the Oinga Boinga feel to them...

I really liked it. Not anything amazing, but it was still a good movie. Depp was actually a really good Wonka. And it was really hilarious in some places... The subtle stuff they put in that not everyon caught on to... Yeah, it was a pretty decent film. I liked it better than the original, but I've always thought the original was boring.

Also, I've never read the book...

Well, I'm planning on going to see it today. I would like if it was a closer adaptation to the book, because just naming the original movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, it was just a wink and a nod that it was a vehicle for Gene Wilder. So I was thrilled when I learned that this version was retaining the original title. It seemed like a good sign to me. Of course, then I saw all the teaser trailers and didn't find Charlie in there once and realized that it was probably a vehicle for Johnny Depp, which disappointed me. It doesn't bother my girlfriend and her friends who are big enough Johnny Depp fans that that just makes it better. Well, it's been so long since I've read the book or seen the movie that I'll just have to take it for what it is.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I hope i can see it tomorrow after I find out what my boss wants me to do for the next few months. Honestly, i wonder about taking this job. These people are not professionals and that was what i was wantin' to work with.

I got the book out. It doesn't go into much detail about what Wonka looked like. But if they were going for accuracy shouldn't Depp have had a goatee? The book described Wonka as having a goatee. Also I didn't any description that would make Depp look closer to Wonka than Wilder. Yes, I know Wilder didn't have a goatee either.

Yeah, Depp and WIlder should both have had the goatee. Stupid movie producers.

I didn't mean that. I mean that I didn't see anything in the discrption that would make Depp look more like Wonka than Wilder.

I believe the book described Wonka as excessively pale from being locked in the factory for so long.

I'll see if I can track down one of the older copies of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, the new version they have out is dreadful and I don't like the new "reimagined" illustrations.

They have a new version? What is different about it? Was any of the wording changed?

The oompa-loompa "Black pygmies" was changed to be a little less racist(they are now a "fanciful white" or something). There are other changes in wording, but my biggest beef is with the illustrations being changed.

How is saying they were black pygmies racist? If it had said their being black pygmies had made them inferior, I'd understand but...

Funny how it isn't racist to talk about fanciful white people.
