Will we ever see the original trilogy released — Page 3

It’d be surreal to even own copies of the Original Trilogy (in their original versions) at this point.

It’s been 21 years since we’ve gotten a decent transfer of the OUT. It would definitely be surreal.

But a lot of “surreal” Blu-Rays have been coming out recently.

The directors cut of Exorcist III is coming to Blu Ray
The Iron Giant is coming to Blu Ray (with a new extended cut)
Stephen Kings IT is getting a German Blu-Ray release
Godzilla 1984 is getting a US Blu-Ray release
Bill and Teds Bogus Journey is coming to Blu Ray

Hopefully the OUT will make the list of titles that’ll finally get a new transfer/Blu Ray this year

We’ll see. I don’t see how an Episode IV-VII set could work otherwise. Who knows, though? Those steelbooks were a pointless release.

Well, that was a 20th Century Fox release. Perhaps they are milking the OT for all it’s worth while they still have rights. Make as much money off the old Blu Ray discs before Disney drops the OUT set and takes the sales away from 'em.

As I understand it, Fox will still get the distributor’s cut for I–VI for any release before 2020 (or thereabouts, whenever their deal ends). It’s just that the SE is the only cut they have access to to release unilaterally, and in the absence of new material from Lucasfilm, that’s what they have to release to make money from SW.

If anything, a IV-VII set would symbolize more than anything the idea that the prequels are a thing of the past for the most part.

And Disney owns Lucasfilm. Makes sense for them to not give FOX a new material they may have.
Oh man, what if we get the theatrical cuts with the truncated new Lucasfilm opening. Oh god.

Well Disney is making $ either way. Lucasfilm still gets most of the moneys from sales of existing I–VI editions, and they did even before the Disney acquisition. And as long as Fox still has the distribution rights, they’ll certainly still insist on having their logo at the beginning.

This is the perfect time to release the unaltered films because the Fox logo and fanfare will remain if it’s a physical copy of the film.

John Landis said it would happen, maybe this is it. We’ll see. Won’t have high hopes though.
I’ve been let down by Lucasfilm for too long to put my hopes up.

I don’t get the point of leaving out the prequels unless it’s going to be the OUT. Why include Special Edition changes done only to tie into the prequels? I mean, Abrams himself said he showed the theatrical cuts to his kids because it was “very important,” which likely means TFA was meant to follow the original cuts more than the special editions.

Am I reaching here, or could this be a great sign?

Oh and also, keep in mind that the GOUT is widely believed to have been released in response to the prevalence of laserdisc transfer bootlegs in circulation. Now with fan preservations like Despecialized and SSE making the news, more pressure is on now than it was even then to do something about it.

I don’t think you’re reaching at all, because whenever I watch The Force Awakens, nothing about the whole movie reminds me of the prequels at all, except for when Maz Kanata says and I paraphrase “I’ve seen evil take many forms. The Sith, The Empire, today, it is The First Order.”

It’s quite clear which version of the OT JJ prefers, especially since he showed his kids the unaltered versions.

If sub par Laser Disc transfers got Lucas to budge, there’s no way HD fan restorations won’t persuade Disney to release an OUT set. The demand for them is very obvious. Over a million and a half views on Harmys YouTube video.

Really, really hope tomorrow morning I see the news article “Disney releases theatrical star wars films”

I don’t think the Sith line was directly prequel-related. I get what you’re saying though. The only part that made me think of the prequels was the “clone army” mention.

Even clone armies are alluded to in the OT though.

Watching the stream of the Celebration closing ceremonies now, last chance for an announcement.

EDIT: they just revealed a very retro looking logo for next year’s convention and alluded to the 40th anniversary.

EDIT2: nothin’.

EDIT3: here’s that logo:

To quote Oppo Ranciscis “And that is what concerns me.” To have Disney release any post-ANH films on DVD/Blu-ray post-2020 with no Fox logo and fanfare is an insult. They’re still Fox films to me and always will be.

But just because it happening on the streaming versions can’t possibly mean it will happen on home video, right? One of two things could happen; Fox can renew distribution (or even buy permanent distribution) or Disney can work something out to keep the Fox logo and fanfare intact for all post-2020 distribution and Fox will get an incentive.

It won’t happen on the home video versions because Fox would have to licence the films to Disney. That’s kind of why it’s the perfect time for a blu ray of the OUT, unless Disney bought out Fox without us hearing about it. If they wait until after 2020 then I’m not sure if they’d bother to keep Fox’s fanfare.

That may be to you but it’s not like they’d even have a choice about it, even if they wanted to do, and of course they wouldn’t.

It honestly makes no difference to me if they remove the fox logo from the SE. It will sync up better with VII, VIII and IX anyway. That said, the way they did it in TFA (the lucasfilm logo with no sound) is the way it should be in such a scenario, not the cobbled-together music que they came up with for the digital release of the five non-ANH movies.
