Will Disney eventually release every version of all Star Wars movies?

Will Disney eventually release all versions of all 11 main Star Wars movies including the Holiday Special on Disney Plus? I would like to see the 1997 Star Wars movies on Disney Plus too. I am glad I have Star Wars 1997 Respecialized Edition. The original unaltered versions along with the theatrical version of episode 1 should be released too as well as the 1997 special editions. Puppet Yoda episode 1 should be preserved. The sequels probably do not need additional versions. Attack of the Clones has different versions. Revenge of the Sith does too. Empire Strikes Back 1997 depicts Luke screaming when he falls into the pit. I think it would be cool for Disney to release the 1997 versions again. I saw these versions when I was very young at the movie theater. It would be really cool if the unaltered versions of episodes 4 through 6 were released. I wish I could have seen the original theatrical versions of episodes 4 through 6 at the movies. I would rather have seen the original unaltered versions on the big screen than the 1997 versions.

I doubt this will be done anytime soon.

I think any replies to this will be like the posts in this other similar thread?:

Disney Plus should release all of the theatrical versions of the Star Wars movies on their service

And yes, I hope so too!

Some of us think it is an obvious solution to the Disney CEO’s recent quotes about cutting back on the number of future Star Wars (and Marvel) projects to cut costs.

As Emre said in one of the other threads: “Less Star Wars = less Disney+ subscriptions”.

If they want people to still subscribe to their Disney+ platform, but state they are doing less new shows in the future, why not give them “new content” in what is already sitting in the Disney or Lucasfilm archives?

It won’t cost them much to screen them on Disney+, and may even get new subscribers signing up as well. Especially if the unaltered theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy are made available. The 1997 Special Edition too. Maybe even the various cuts of the other Star Wars films, and that Holiday Special too!

“Don’t tell anyone… but when ‘Star Wars’ first came out, I didn’t know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you’ve planned the whole thing out in advance. Throw in some father issues and references to other stories - let’s call them homages - and you’ve got a series.” - George Lucas

They have the content. They have the platform. They choose not to make that content available. Nor do they explain why.

They treat fans, customers, and consumers with contempt.

And then wonder why they get a bad reputation, or why subscriptions are down, merchandise sales are down, general interest is down.

It is not difficult to treat the fans, customers or consumers with respect. Treat them with some intelligence, answer their queries, instead of ignoring them. This is the 21st century, the digital age of communications, with many different platforms to inform and converse on.

Show all the Star Wars content they have, all the different versions and cuts. Or simply explain why they choose not to.

Too much “common sense” in there, Caston.

You would never make it as a studio executive! 😉

Seriously, it is sad to not see so much Star Wars content. That is 100% on those in charge of Lucasfilm and Disney.

The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

Seriously, a 4k UHD set, three discs per film, with the unaltereds and the “rare 1997 special edition” versions, seems like a no brainer to me.

Yep. Or even on Disney+ as well.

Include the theatrical CPY of TPM, Imax cut of AOTC, and whatever changes they made to ROTS before the blu ray too.

The Prequels are meant to be more popular now, so why not bank on that popularity. Offer the fans all the versions.

If the writers and actors strikes continue, and there is some talk of VFX workers also going on strike?, then Disney may have little option but to finally start showing the film and tv content already lying around in their archives for their Disney+ streaming service?

I hope so.

Although I do want the strikes get sorted quickly so the writers and actors get what they are asking for.

Disney releasing Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2 on 4k UHD & blu ray is a welcome start.

They are also releasing Wandavision and Loki too.

They also are releasing Prey on 4k. From 20th Century Studios. I never thought Disney would put out so much all at once.

That ended up being made exclusively for Hulu. By skipping theaters altogether they exploited a loophole that would’ve otherwise required that the movie have a window on HBO afterwards. Avatar 2 was apparently the very last new movie in their deal with HBO.

I hope that they do! That would be great if Disney would do that, considering that a lot of the Star Wars prints, (such as the lost 70mm print of The Empire Strikes Back, the IMAX print of Attack of the Clones, and the 1997 version of the Special Edition) have not been publicly released on any home media. But we all know that George Lucas will not let Disney release the original versions, so my guess it that it is unlikely that they will.

Just another fan who wants to preserve the theatrical versions of the OT.

If all else fails, they can release it quietly so George doesn’t notice.

I’m not really that much of a movie purist. I really should’ve thought my name out a bit more.

Doing discs of movies/shows already on streaming is not at all the same as them putting out the unaltered OT. I would sing the praises of Droids & Ewoks on Blu-ray however.

Personally I’d love the highest quality version of the holiday special possible [is the cartoon scanned from film on d+? Haven’t watched it there] but there is a hq tape copy that’s available, and the master might not be much better.

I believe they are referring to this cut never being officially released

https://www.starwars.com/news/empire-at-40-star-wars-the-empire-strikes-back-ending-changes

as well as some alternate takes (e.g. Vader’s “oof” when Luke kicks him during the duel, and “You were lucky to get out of there” (70mm) vs. “You’re lucky you don’t taste very good” (35mm), inexplicably changed to the take from the 70mm for one of the Special Editions, but some alternate takes of various lines have never resurfaced other than via cassette recordings (if I recall correctly).

It isn’t really lost 70mm Empire, Lucas considered it a rough cut, ironic he views the entire theatrical OT as rough drafts.
