Mega Drive and Genesis are one and the same, apart from the name change, which I never understood the reason. Perhaps South America, Europe, Asia and Australia did not aprove a console named after a book from the Bible.

Well, America (like in so many other instances) was the *only* country to use the name. I don't know why they need to have so many products pitched at them differently from everyone else.
