Why are threads deleted if there is no activity?

I was looking for the thread that discussed the Emperors new dialogue from ESB and I saw that it no longer existed. I wanted to do this instead of starting a new thread. Is there a reason why older threads are deleted, or am I doing something wrong?

The Jedi are all but extinct.......

You can adjust the number of threads that appear by default by clicking the "customize" link on the upper-right.

But they still only go back as far as April.

Couldn't tell you why. I didn't develop the software.

Definitely. I'm hoping to salvage some of my, "why I loath the SE" threads, so I don't have to type anew anymore. I still need to check my PC to see if I've saved any.
