Who should Direct the Star Wars VII, VIII, and IX ?

Quite a few names have been mentioned on the internet.

Not sure if this has already been asked in another thread.

Two names that are already obvious are J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon.

Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson, Matthew Vaughn were also mentioned.

How are they going to get around the DGA situation though is beyond me.

 

Most of the big name directors are already attached to films for quite a few years to come.  And the less known are probably who will be chosen.

I would like to see Steven Spielberg or Brad Bird. The others like Christopher Nolan don't have the sensibility IMO.

I wish that I could just wish my feelings away...but I can't.  Wishful wishing can only lead to wishes wished for in futile wishfulness, which is not what I wish to wish for.

IIRC, Tron Legacy didn't have a director credit until the end, nor POTC, so maybe the DGA isn't as anal retentive these days.

George was part of that DGA event last year, so maybe the hatchet has been buried?

NO Nolan, no Whedon, no Abrams.  I would also be fine with Brad Bird, David Yates, Joel Cohen & Ethan Coen, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Fincher, Darren Aronofsky, Cameron Crowe, Marc Foster, Andrew Niccol, Antoine Fuqua and Michael Mann, Guillermo del Toro, Joe Cornish, Gore Verbinski, Guy Ritchie, Edgar Wright, Shane Black or the Russo brothers. Star Wars doesn't need Nolan, Abrams, Singer, Raimi, or Ratner with all these other great directors available.

I agree with the whole Nolan saving Batman part, but I have trouble seeing him fit in with the Star Wars mythos. His strength appears to lie in telling stories that would be too gritty, realistic, and morally gray for Star Wars.

Christopher Nolan just doesn't make sense. First of all, I don't believe he would ever agree to it (just came off a blockbuster trilogy, would be working off someone else's script). Some people are saying that if he did it, it would be all gritty and such. I don't believe Nolan is dumb enough to Dark Knightify SW for a sequel. I think he would be able to make it like the others. But the thing is, I don't think he would want to. 

I'm staying with Brad Bird (though Spielberg is definitely my number one).

By the way, if the new trilogy was a reboot, I would say my number one is Nolan.

If they're going to be true to the spirit of the first two films, Zahn EU, or at least adult oriented new stories, my pick first & foremost would be Jon Favreau.

My preferred choice is Spielberg.  

However, if I had to put down money one who I actually thought it would be, I'd have to go with Gore Verbinski.  I base this on he fact that Disney already has a good track record with him having done 3 Pirates movies and the upcoming Lone Ranger, and unlike a lot of the other names being thrown around, according to IMDB, he seems as though he might actually have an open schedule that would allow for it what with Lone Ranger in post production and scheduled for release next years and no future projects announced.

My go to guys with this one would have to be Joe Johnston (Lucas, Spielberg, protege) for Episode VII, Thomas Alfredson (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) for Episode VIII and Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) for Episode IX.
For writers, I could see Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, Tintin, Coupling, Sherlock) as capturing the high adventure and high melodrama tone of the franchise well. Hell, it's a long shot but Lawrence Miles (Faction Paradox, Doctor Who) could turn out a cracking Star Wars screenplay.

No I haven't seen that one but I remember seeing Detective Dee And The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame (2011) recently and remarking that it succeeded at doing everything the PT tried to do.

They should try and poach someone from Pixar.  Pixar has been creating some of the best character driven films that have come out from a big company in the last 10 years.  I think it would be good to find a director who is younger and a fan of the original films.  People like Spielberg and Zemeckis are too old and out of touch.  They don't make films how the new Star Wars films need to be.  Some tv directors/writers should be considered too.  A lot of amazing television has been created in the last 5-10 years too. 

I like the UP writer and directors:

Pete Docte, Bob Peterson

Then There is Brad Bird and of course Joss Whedon should be considered for any big directorial gig.

seeing all these big names rattled off as potential future directors/writers reminds me of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder always throwing money around to buy the best free agents and coaches and it still hasnt worked for him!!  bwaaaaaahahahahahahahaaa

arent most directors like Bird and Nolan pretty much unavailable due to othe projects?  or do they have a "star wars clause" in their contracts like college coaches used to have a "notre dame" clause where they can leave just like that!??!

here is my dark-horse:

i remember watching the documentaries of the PT, I was always intrigued by Rob Coleman. 

He seemed to actually care about things like behavior, performance and quality.  does anyone know if he has considered film directing as a next step in his career path?

How about Nicholas Meyer? Wrote and directed two of the best Star Trek sequels, and lots of other great movies.

From what I have heard Steven Speilberg, Niel BloomKamp ( District 9 ),  Alfonso Cuaron ( Children of Men and Gravity ), Matthew Vaughn ( Kick Ass and First Class ), Darren Arnofsky ( The Fountain and Noah ) and Joss Whedon ( Avengers  and Serenity ) are some of the few names being panned around at Disney/ Lucasfilm. Also, sources I have read are pretty certain that this trilogy will center Around Luke Skywalker, and Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford  are on board to reprise their roles as older characters.

Also I have heard that there will be another trilogy after this next one and will center around the skywalker kids, but this immediate trilogy ( 7, 8, and 9 ) will follow the tone and method of the Original trilolgy.

Huh?  You wouldnt want Tsui Hark because of one bad movie? (i havent seen ABT III)  The guy has made some really good movies.  He wouldn't be my first choice, but a Tsui Hark Star Wars movie would be a blast, for sure. 

And as for Ridley Scott, his best movie was in 1979 and he's been pretty hit or miss since then.  Blade Runner was really good, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down were pretty good, Prometheus was worth watching I guess, and then he's got a bunch of mediocre to absolute crap movies. (Robin Hood, for example was atrocious). I'm not saying he wouldn't make a good SW movie, but just looking at his filmography he would be way down on my list.

 had it not been for Michael Fassbender, I would have marked prometheus as an F. 

that said, I dont know what your feelings are for Kingdom of heaven Director's Cut.  I think its one of the great movies of the last 10 years.  just spectacular.  I cannot believe it wasnt released like that in the theatres and Scott could have had a really good shot at winning a best director oscar.

absolute shame....20 years from now, he will look back at that movie as the one that got away.

i think the best way to do the next trilogy is to take the path of the O.T style, by the rhythm, the humor the action the adventure and the most important the acting direction by that to choose a very good actors (not essentially stars) George lucas was smart (blessed?) to have cast the magic trio Hamill, Ford and Fisher...Spielberg is on the top, but i don't think he'll do it...still Kathy Kennedy is a very good friend of him..and old time producer of his movies...Who knows.

One of the pixar directors, they are so talented and SW ultimate fans, maybe Brad Bird, Lee Unkrich, or others well known young directors..kevin smith, ben affleck, edgar wright, Duncan jones, Josh tran.

A story after the ROTJ with an older Luke (The one and only Mark hamill) will be a blast. 

None of those : J.J. Abrams, Joss Whedon. Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson, Matthew Vaughn, can really do a SW sequel, they are too big and at the end they gonna deliver a movie that has only the title STAR WARS in common with the Previous Episodes.

You think Matthew Vaughn is too big?  He has only directed 4 movies.

I think Stardust is the reason he should be a Top 3 contender for a Star Wars movie.
