Who like The Force Awakens as a title? — Page 4

I have a feeling people will still refer to the films by its respective episode number rather than it's title.  The PT and OT have been promoted that way for 15 years so it has been ingrained in everyone's head.

but for 19 years before that, the OT was promoted as "Star Wars", "Empire", and "Jedi". If GL was able to change what people call them, Disney can just as easily change it back.

That's true, but it will take time if this is what Disney really wants to do.  I'm guessing the majority of fans that exist now going into the ST are from the SE/PT/revisionist era who have gotten used to calling the films by the numbers.  Won't be easy to change that.

I fail to understand how anyone could be complaining about the title already, as if they already know the plot of the movie and what title suits it best.

And as for the word "Awakens" in the title, of course it's a metaphore and not to be taken literally. The continual puns about the Force having been asleep aren't getting any funnier.

The Force could very easily refer to Luke himself.  He's gone into exile and will be awakened, so to speak.  He'll again be a force for change, just as he was in Star Wars77.

It could have been called An Old Hope, then. ;-)

Plinkett begs to differ, plus there's the bold in this article:

I'm making that assumption because the PT and SE are more "fresh" than the UOT and everything that went with that, which pretty pretty much ended in the late 90s.  I'm not sure if Disney eliminating "Episode VII" from advertising has anything to do with the fan base necessarily, but it seems they want to capture the spirit of the OT before the SE and PT came along.

Obama is more "fresh" than Reagan, but plenty of politicians copy Reagan and avoid anything Obama.

But there are plenty who still love everything Obama.

The original title was "hairy_hen's Mom Sleeps With Everyone."

Nah, that's way too derivative.  If it had been "The Force Sleeps With hairy_hen's Mom," that would have been much more dramatically compelling.

Two more, this time messing with the kerning between letters. First up is my favorite, everything slimmed down but not resized much:

Second is the same thing, but I didn't adjust the kerning on "The Force," just on "Awakens." Not so much a fan of this one, but it's not awful.

I'm starting to like the typeface a lot. I think it's familiar, Star Wars-y yet distinct. Fits nicely next to these:

Alright, this is the last one (er...four), I promise.

This time I used no actual elements from the officially-released logo, unlike my other attempts which used nothing but cut-out and moved-around elements of the official logo (yes, even the Star Wars and the bars were made from cutting-and-pasting).

Here, I actually used the Serif Gothic Heavy with custom kerning to create a new logo. It's the same font as the official one, but this is much higher-quality (and consistent quality since all resizing was done in the Photoshop type tool, not rasterized), and I had a bit more control over the type this way.

The Star Wars and the bars were just cut out from a vector Empire Strikes Back logo, which I straightened in Photoshop. While doing this, I decided I liked the bar along the bottom, so I did a version with it and a version without it. I also decided to do a version with a yellow Star Wars border like I'd done before, and one with a white logo like Empire always had.

So here you go! I think my favorite is the yellow border with the bar on the bottom, but I like all four (for once) - right-click and "view" or "save" image for the full 1920x1080 size:

Could be wrong in prejudging, but a metaphor as a title feels pretentious and a touch melodramatic. In the end, the title doesn't matter that much and I do want to stay positive. But by way of analogy, renaming "When Harry Met Sally" or "The Princess Bride" to "Love Awakens" would be groan worthy.

The blue elephant in the room.

Thanks! Both of the yellow-bordered ones are my favorites, but I keep waffling on whether I prefer the "underlined" version or the first one.

Definitely this one for me.  It has that OT feel, but its still kind of doing its own thing as well.

guess it works. could have been worse. more inspiring than ROTS (which a lot of people predicted) and AOTC.

and at least it doesnt have the "of the"

i recall a rumor for episode III was going to have a title "Mask of Doom"  and I thought it was a great idea.  still think it would have been a better title.

Its funny cuz the first thing I thought of when I heard "The Force Awakens" was actually the epilogue of 2061-Odyessy 3

as far as how its printed, I also prefer if they left the Episode VII out

click here if lack of OOT got you down

I'm okay with it. It's better than any from the PT. Wondering what its translation will be.

I really don't care about the title... all I care is about the actual film.

Once the film comes out, this, but since we don't know anything else about the film at the moment, I'm going to enjoy the title.

If I ever do a fan edit of Episode 7, which I sincerely hope there is zero need for, I may try to carry on my tradition of giving an alternate title from an EU novel. Perhaps "The Undying Force"? It might help to see what the story is about!

If the 'Stronger Vader Edit' is any indication, some people will feel the need to edit any Star Wars film, no matter how good.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
