It certianly kicks off the new series of films....
Now I'm really curious to know what has happened in the last 30 years! Seems like they will have a lot of ground to cover...
It doesn't matter what the subtitle is. We're all going to continue to call it Episode VII anyway.
I actually don't think so. We don't call The Empire Strikes Back "Episode V," or Return of the Jedi "Episode VI."
In fact, the only reason I think people still call the prequels "Episode I" and so on is because the "Episode _" was so prominent in the advertising. Based on the title treatment released today, I don't think we'll see "Episode VII" much, if at all, on posters and trailers and the like.
I have always called the films by its title. In fact, I even call the original film Stars Wars instead of A New Hope. I think a title like "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" is far too much. The subtitle is sufficient enough.
Everyone I know calls the OT by their proper titles (including Star Wars - I only have one friend who calls that one A New Hope, but he still calls it A New Hope and not Episode IV), but the prequels "Episode I," "II," and "III." I try to use their proper titles, but generally end up saying "Episode _" instead just out of habit.
That's what happens when you make the episode number twice the size of the title on every poster and trailer.
Meh.
I mean the first film didn't care about subtitles at all; and the rest of the OT were just known as Empire Strikes Back and Return Of the Jedi. I don't think episodes really came into play until the prequels.
They didn't because the episode numbers weren't part of the titles. Even in the opening crawls the episode number and title are separate.
I love it, and will never refer to it as episode 7 again, Nothing makes me more sick than having it associated with the prequels ...
Yuck.
Probably, just like "Wars", "Empire", and Jedi" I'll end up calling it either "Force" or "Awakens".
It almost seems like "The Force Awakens" is taking a slight jab at the PT. ;-)

I agree. They can't actually call it, "The force re-awakens" because that would be too obvious. _But_... *wink wink, nudge nudge* icwutudidthar
Not sure this ought to be it's own thread.
Where were you in '77?
Undecided. Guess it will depend on how well it suits the mood and premises of the new flick.
At first I was dissapointed that the title had anything to do with the force, although this is still better than having Jedi or Sith in the title. It's just that we already had a much-hyped Star Wars event (granted, it wasn't a movie) where The Force was also the first two words of a three-word title.
...Then I realized how it works on a subconscious level, reminding us how the franchise is "awakening." Sure, it has a symmetry with the three-word titles of the first parts of the other trilogies (and Empire is the only one aside from TPM to start with "the," so there's that), but more than anything else they're appealing to our feelings of the franchise itself.

Exactly how I feel.
I'm not sure I like it. If Luke used the Force in "Star Wars" to blow up the Death Star, doesn't that mean The Force has been awake all along?

Heh, I feel another title nitpick coming on. This reminds me of when Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was announced and everyone was like "Doesn't the dawn come before the rise?"
Maybe it went to sleep sometime after ROTJ? At least it isn't, "The Ancient Fear" or "The Sith Rises" or "The Midichlorian Explored"
I can't wait to get going on TRA.
I like it a lot. It succinct, and gives a nice feeling to it. A feeling or mystery and hope and adventure. Basically what I like about Star Wars. Great title, excited to see how it plays into the film's narrative.
Also, thanks for making this it's own thread. I'm trying to avoid spoilers so I don't want to visit the spoiler thread but I'd like to talk about stuff like this (which is a big deal and obviously not a spoiler because how can anyone avoid a film's title).
Also oh my god guys they've finished filming Episode VII and they gave it a title it's actually finally going to come out. I seriously can't believe it.
I hate it. Sounds like something you'd see on a fan film.
A bit generic. Could be better.
Sounds ok to me. TFA
It just occurred to me that Hayden was in Awake.
I can't wait for the ridiculous alarm clock to go off :-D
