I'm for local government but seeing as our national identity was largely invented by Englishmen to appeal to Germans and perpetuated to keep Americans happy it's hard to take it too seriously.

I'm such an ignorant American about the British Isles. I know that Irish are on their own island, and that Scots are on the north of the main island, but where do the Welshes fit in?

Scotland is a stretch of land.
The legal system is different from the rest of the UK and that has a large knock on effect (education, healthcare provision etc) but the National identity is a largely a fiction written by and maintained for outsiders (rather than self penned and self serving).
However if you want to visit and view the place through a Victorian German fantasy lens we will welcome the money :-D

It's more complicated as there are really two Englands, the South East and the rest.
Most of the wealth is centred in the densely populated South East, the North Of England has probably a more legitimate National Identity than Scotland and Wales.
Scotland is mostly empty space thanks to the Highland clearances.
While the landmass looks rather sizable Glasgow, Inverness and Aberdeen aside it's pretty much small towns and gracing land for the sheeps.
Edinburgh may be the Capital City but it's pretty much a medium sized town with lots of nice buildings and a lot of influence.

I actually wasn't talking about all that stuff.
I've run into more than my fair share of Scots during my adventures, and one characteristic that was present in almost every one of them was a strong sense of pride in being Scottish (and a distinct sense of humor).

I'm proud of my lovely neighbours, the countryside looks beautiful, the legal system, education system and healthcare system are better than the rest of the UK and there is much for Scottish people to take pride in but we should have cut the umbilicus connecting us to the cesspool of Westminster politics by now.
We have our own corrupt politicians we'd like to personally have a polite chat with without having to carry around those goons.
I wish the Welsh, the Cornish, and the English every success in doing that too.
Sectarianism, our Westminster smashed industry and areas of dire relative poverty are nothing to be proud of.

Where did the name for the "no true Scotsman" fallacy come from? Was it just random, some anectode, or an sense of pride ascribed to or frequent among Scotsmen?

I can count the times a Scot has said something like that, close enough for me to hear, with the fingers of one hand.
I've probably heard other people say it more, indeed I've heard more people say variations of, "no true homosexual would..." etc
But it tends to pass largely IGNORED around here.
