While we're waxing nostalgic: Scouting

Anyone here a former Cub Scout/Boy Scout?

I can remember I went as high as Boy Scouts (back before they were under siege by the thought police), but then I called it quits. I can remember getting those merit bages for doing almost nothing.

I remember the one time I went on a scout camping trip that I had the WORST ear-ache of my life (can still remember it, that's how bad it was). What a shame...could have been a good memory.

I was a cub scout every year, when I got up to boy scouts I just lost interest.

I tried to get into being a boy scout, but I just couldn't.

I think I just went on one camping trip as well before I called it quits.

Eagle Scout here. Got it back in '89 and promptly quit. I had just started high school and Boy Scouts wasn't exactly the ideal social group to be in at the time.

Q: When does a cub scout become a boy scout?

A: When he eats his first brownie.

BTW, I got kicked out of boy scouts over peanut butter (actually, that was the last straw. )

I'm a Cub Leader for a group of 4 boys. It'd be more fun if I had more time on my hands.

Facist!! Just kidding. I can't believe how the scouts are under siege these days. One of the few good things we can get our kids involved in. I plan to as soon as my son's old enough (few years to go)

My wife and I decided that, when we have kids, we will get them started in some kind of extracurricular activity. If they want to quit after a while and join another, that's fine. But they have to be involved in something. Scouts, sports, student government, whatever. So long as they're involved in something.

In retrospect I wish I had been involved more. I played Little League for a season, but was so bad I hated. I played youth basketball for my church, but got kicked off the team for being a trouble maker (Hard to believe, huh?) Scouting worked for me for quite a while, then I REALLY got into basketball late in high school, followed subsequently by reconstructive double-knee surgery, eg: My b-ball career was over.

Scouting has been there since I could remember (until high school started, that is). Sports were a passing fancy until that time as well. One year of baseball, two years of soccer, one year of basketball. I was terrible at all of them. Hell, I'm not even a particularly good spectator even now. Heh heh.

I still find it ironic that I wound up a Cub Leader, since I had nothing but negative opinions of the Scouting programme as a teen. Mind you, I really liked Cubs as a kid; the Kub Kar Rallies were a blast, and I just took my Cubs to their first in February. They loved it.

Kub Kar Rallies? Similar to the Soapbox Derby?

Is spelling Cub Car with K's instead of C's the new 'hip' way they are doing it now?

Bossk (and anyone else that doesnt know) the Cub Car Rallies are races of little wooden cars that the scouts make. they have a kit you buy thats a block of wood shaped basically like a car that you can carve and paint how you want it.

then the cars are lined up, in a track (think ours had 4 or 5 lanes) that is basically just a straight path with a drop at the begging to give the cars momentum. cars are all released at the same time and first one to the end wins. there was a bracket type thing and an ultimate 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner.

obviously depending on the pack would determine how big/crazy of an event it was, some people end up getting all serious in designing the fastest/coolest car and others just do it for fun (though most anything is like that). but it generally tended to be either the whole event was a big thing for the pack as a whole or just a fun event.

ive taken 2nd and/or 3rd before...cant remember if my car ever got first

there is also the rain gutter regata (not as big) that was same type of thing but with boats (couldnt really modify the boats as much though) and basically you would float them in rain gutters and the boats owner would blow on the sail to power the boat and get it to the other side.

Oh wait, not Soapbox Derby... I meant Pinewood Derby. Yep, based on your description, same thing. Little kit cars you whittle and paint. Fun times. I've considered buying a kit and making one just for old times sake.

You should see some of the kits they have now. There's a company called Pinecar, and here's an example:

that 'kit' looks already designed...where's the fun in that?

I did scouts for 2 or 3 years, but lost interest. Honestly, the episode of South Park kind of reminded me of it.

Just kidding. But seriously, there was just a lack of leadership. We just ended up goofing around the whole time while getting nothing accomplished.

It's just like RC car racing these days. You have to struggle to find a build-it-yourself RC car kit. All of them are prebuilt and ready to go out of the box. What is the fun in that? I want to build it. That's where all the learning comes from so you can upgrade it later on. If you don't know how to put it together, you will never be able to take it apart to replace parts and still be able to reassemble it.

I agree; in fact, the local Rally organisers won't allow Pinecars to compete in the design category. I say good on 'em.

Considering they're 100% prefab save for paint job, they'd better not be allowed in the design category.
