When was "A New Hope" mentioned?

when was the first time GL mentioned "episode 4" or "a new hope"? Since he claims he had the whole episodes drafted out back in the early 70s, he should have known it was called episode 4 - a new hope before... I bet he never mentioned it until 1980.

You mean aside from the beginning crawls of the films, right? I know that "Episode 4: A New Hope" was only tacked on to prints of SW distributed, I think, from 1979 on. Any prints that were original theatrical releases or rereleases from 1977 and 1978 simple said "Star Wars" in the opening crawl. From that point on, all films had the Episode # in the crawls. They never appeared in advertising or theatrical posters or trailers that I know of, though.

You mean in interviews or something? Mentioning "A New Hope" as opposed to what?

Fast-forward to 1989. Star Wars publishing is largely dormant, with West End Games being the sole publisher regularly expanding the universe through roleplaying games and guides. Galaxy Guide I: A New Hope added more information about the cantina aliens -- including names and backgrounds for many of them, though author Grant Boucher invented much of the material since there was nothing to go on. Also that year, author Troy Denning shed light on more history with Galaxy Guide 4: Alien Races. In 1995, Bantam Books' Tales From The Mos Eisley Cantina not only added more names, but added personality and histories to a number of cantina aliens. That same year, Decipher Inc. fleshed out more cantina aliens in their Star Wars Customizable Card Game.

Allow me to re-frase that question and make this a more interesting and useful thread: when was the first time GL mentioned "episode 4" or "a new hope"? Since he claims he had the whole episodes drafted out back in the early 70s, he should have known it was called episode 4 - a new hope before... I bet he never mentioned it until 1980.

I don't know when he actually mentioned it, but I'm sure I've read that the movie was always called "Episode IV: A New Hope." GL decided to take it out of the opening crawl at the last minute because he thought it might be unneccesarily confusing to the viewer. Of course later, after the film was a hit and sequels could be made, the full title was added back on to later prints.

How convenient.
"Drink the Kool-Aid. Wear blinders. Cover your ears. Because that's the only way you can totally enjoy Revenge of the Sith -- the final and most futile attempt from skilled producer, clumsy director and tin-eared writer George Lucas to create a prequel trilogy to match the myth-making spirit of the original Star Wars saga he unleashed twenty-eight years ago. Fan boys, of course, have convinced themselves otherwise. So have several critics, if you go by early reviews."

Well, from what I know GL didn't have the whole thing planned, and did not know about any episodes before ESB. He basically made up as he went along and later lied, saying he had all planned out.

Well actually that's not quite true

Being a sad twat I am, I just listed to Lucas' interview thing he done at Celebration 3 over at Hyperspace.
Someone there asked him something like "when did you all have the story's planned?" and GL's reply was that he really only had 4-6 planned. Well it was one big story at first.
He never really wanted to make the PT, and that it started at 4 to make it look like the Saturday matinee serial. Although we know that Episode 4 was never mentioned at fist....
Only until Jurassic park was made, he then realised the effects were up to standard to make his story...the rest you know.

Well something like that.

But yeah, he does tend to change the story with every interview …
