When it was just a movie....

This is the back of a cereal box from 1977.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f20/stonetriple/Lucky_SWbox.jpg

The text reads;

“Collect great photos of Luke Skywalker, Ben (Obi Wan) Kenobi, Princess Leia, and Han Solo. Get other exciting Stick-ons of Star Wars Robots, Creatures, and Scenes like Chewbacca, R2-D2, and Fighting Space Ships”

Funny how there’s no mention of Darth Vader. He was just a bad guy with a black mask. Just one of the characters on the adventure that Luke Skywalker went on. The movie, the story - it really worked back then.

Most of us were kids back then too (if alive at all). I'll leave you with that thought.

As an adult 30 years later (I was 15 in 1977) - the single story, separate character film still works better.

That's my thought.

I was 3 in 1977. I was old enough to remember ROTJ in the theater. I'm 32 now. The single story still works so much better than the PT. Hell, the trilogy works fine on its own.

Just thought i'd point out that there could be SOME health implications if you attempt to eat that cereal now if its still in there.

Though, it gets me thinking about the sort of memorabilia that may have got thrown in the trash back then.

I remember trading those stickers on the bus. Also the trading cards from Wonder Bread that had a somewhat similar design.

I can't read the text, but what does it say about the TIE Fighter? I'd also guess that they were marketing the heroes, rather than the villains. A more civilized time . . .

PS: I agree that the trilogy was better on its own. But they had to realize even then that Vader was a fantastic villain.

It seems some people are misunderstanding Anchorhead's intentions - he's not saying that the Original Trilogy was better before the Prequel Trilogy was made. He's saying that he likes the "Star Wars" that existed before Empire was made, and while I'm not quite willing to go that far (I still loves me my ESB), I do understand where he's coming from.

Well I understand what he's saying, but I still am glad we have all 6 movies. When it was just Star Wars, it was great...but it got better as the years went on.

Yeah, I was pointing out that it was better when it was just a single film. However, that was just an aside to my post. I really posted the cereal box because I thought it was interesting how simple it all was back then - before it became the juggernaut it would later morph into.

Sunday actually sidetracked my fucking post before it ever got started because he sees battles where there are none. Man, I just thought the cereal box was interesting.

We do have all 6 movies? The last time I checked the only good quality DVD's were the SE & PT, so I would disagree with ya there that we should all be glad for 6 movies. If the PT were never made, the OOT would be the dominant version whenever released on DVD or HD-DVD because Lucas would have no reason to worry about connecting the trilogies and make them come as seamless as he hopes now. Plus if he never did the PT, I wouldn't have to watch doucebag Hayden staring at Luke at the end of ROTJ!

Sorry Anchorhead if this got off topic, but I take issue with anyone who loves the OOT and is glad the PT was made, cause the PT is reason we are all stuck with shit Laserdisk DVD's now!

No, even with no PT, Lucas would screw with the movies. He proved that by extensively altering THX-1138, an obscure, standalone film nobody cares much about. The original version of that isn't available either- he couldn't even resist doing that. There's no way he'd leave the SW trilogy alone.

Oh no - don't tell me LUH is actually THX's sister and that it also turns out that SRT actually built the superstructure, but somehow has no recollection of it.

Let me guess - the original script (that there isn't a copy of and no one ever saw) was actually titled "The Tragedy Of SEN".

Take issue all you want, but your opinion is your own. I happen to enjoy all 6...vhs..dvd..whatever. But you can crap over the PT all you want. You won't be the last.

Sorry about that. But most of the time on these forums, the perception is that after the ESTB the films went completely down hill from that point. But of course, it sounds like I didn't have to tell you that.

Yes, it is. How many times have you read where I took issue with someone else's opinion? How about when I told someone their opinion was wrong? Here, let me help you with the answer - that would be none.

I posted a cereal box and pointed out the stickers you could get in 1977. I didn't post a cereal box and say "look, here's a cereal box - it proves that the PT is shit".

My dislike of anything after Star Wars is not me insulting you or your opinion. In fact, it has absolutely nothing to do with you. You aren't Star Wars - you don't get to speak for Star Wars - you don't represent all that is Star Wars.

For some reason, every time I make a post and mention something positive about Star Wars 77 - here you come, blathering on about how I haven't given the PT the respect it deserves or considered all sides of the issue, etc.

Sunday, I don't care about anything that came after Star Wars. That really doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things.

But you can crap over the PT all you want.

I have definite views on the PT alright. However, if you'd bother reading anything I've written the last few years, you would see that it's really just the lies Lucas tells about writing the last five films and what little I know about the storyline of the PT. For me to be able to "crap over" the PT with any credibility, I would have had to have seen them all. I haven't. I've seen only Phantom. I can't criticize - or even participate in - PT discussions, because I don't know what anyone's talking about.

I happen to enjoy all 6...

Good for you. Your Star Wars marathons last a lot longer than mine.

I was 6 years old in 1977. I didn't see Star Wars until 1982. I still have all my empty boxes of "C-3POs" from the early 1980s! (LOL- they have cut-out character masks on them!)

In hindsight, my 2nd post last night was an apology to you. The first post last night, was supposed to be a reply to Davis. Somehow I obviously screwed that up. So now you think I've attacked you twice in the same thread. Once again, sorry. Everyone's' got their opinions. But what irks me the most is coming to these forums and hearing, not the complaining about not having the OOT preserved as they should be, but the negative dumping over the prequels and SE's when not everyone shares that opinion. I just wish people had a little more respect here for those of us who get tired of hearing the same ole lucasbashing over and over. It's one thing to state your opinion, and lobby for something but it's completely another to berate someone or something to the point many do here. I'm not saying you're one of those people, although in my initial post I falsly assumed you were trying to start something. So once again, I'll apologize for that.

[ ] So, Lucas lied to you (and us,perhaps) about the Star Wars saga the way Obi-Wan lied to Luke about his father. So, like Luke, we have a choice to continue "the hero's journey" or not. Oh, the irony.

There's always something missing....
