Jurassic Park. That’s the one that marked the start of my love for movies.
Now or in the age of childhood?
Because if i want to be honest my childhood self would pick Temple of Doom. While as an adult i prefer Raiders of the Lost Ark. I’m glad its favorite because i’m not a film historian or professional reviewer to go and say how objectively the films Spielberg has made since Schindler’s are all better more adult faire.
I like the movies he made like Close Encounters, ET, and the Indiana Jones movies and Jaws. The popcorn flicks critics poo pooh and say aren’t worth their time. In the modern era my favorite films of his are Catch me if you can, and Minority Report.
I honestly don’t hate any of his movies except for the remake of War of the Worlds. Though there are some that were so boring i never finished. Most of those were topically political or historical in nature.
One i eventually finished which was a hard watch but was brilliant nontheless , Munich. I never did finish the Terminal or Bridge of Spies, or The Post. Did watch Lincoln more than once. War Horse was great.
Never watched the BFG. That was the kids one he made for Disney.
Schindler’s list.
This one’s easy for me - I adore “Hook”. I know Spielberg hasn’t favored it much in recent years, describing the Neverland scenes as being too confined or staged, but to me that’s appropriate, since the story was originally a stage play. He also had a very difficult time with Julia Roberts, going so far as to nickname her “Tinkerhell” and swearing never to hire her again. But I still love the film; the very notion of the personification of imagination losing his own, growing up in our world, and having to re-embrace his innocence to save his children from his sworn enemy? That’s pretty heavy drama, but it still works because of the writing and the actors. Robin Williams, Bob Hoskins, and Maggie Smith (all RIP) were great, but Dustin Hoffman stole the show. I’ve seen a few other Peter Pan movies since, but none have matched this one. I even bought the 3-disc expanded score on CD, earlier this year.
I also believe that there is some merit to Hook and the score by John Williams, it is very good.
Then again I’m a Spielberg apologist who finds some good in Tintin, and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And can defend the film AI. But I still hate the War of the Worlds remake.
I mean I even liked the special editions of ET and Close Encounters as long as they didn’t replace the originals.
What I don’t like is Ready Player One. Passionless directing like he was asleep, and its workmanlike and semi competent.
It is a video game movie not based on a game, that is one long cgi videogame. and a bunch of references.

The one scene I enjoyed from War of the Worlds was the peanut butter sandwich scene. The rest of the movie was a chore to sit through.

I am a UFO nut, so my favorite Spielberg movies are Close Encounters of the Third Kind and ET the Extraterrestrial.
