A Terminator Directers Cut.
Author

Doesn't one of the 4 or 5 different copies of The Terminator currently out there constitute a director's cut?

Yeah; the theatrical version. Cameron insists that the final cut is his intended version, and I agree. All that other stuff is great for exposition, but not really necessary.

Theres only been two versions of the original Terminator but only the theatrical version. If its vastly inferior sequal can get an extended cut why shouldn't it. Plus I love the scene with Sarah talking about blowing up Cyberdine and the finding the chip and the police cheifs death. The movie is still great without these but lets face it those scenes need to be cut back in.

My bad. When people talk Terminator and director's cut I automatically assume they're talking about T2. Judging from the condition of the deleted scenes on the SE, I wonder if a recut would be technically feasible. The 80s were a really bad period for film preservation.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

The scenes were on the DVD and were at quality the same as the movie except for the lack of anamorphic encoding. An extended cut is definutly possible. Why assume Terminator 2. Its very inferior to the original movie.

I HAVE THE TERMINATOR RELEASE THAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. THE DELETED SCENES DO LOOK AS THOUGH THEY COULD BE REINCORPORATED BACK INTO THE MOVIE.

I was shocked these scenes were taken out. For example the scene in the forest with Kyle crying really allows you to sympasize with his character more then anything. I set up Sarahs war on Cyberdine better also. The finding of the chip and showing that it happened in Cyberdine labs was genious I thought. I was shocked Cameron thought of that then. I would love an extended cut.

Simple. Until the Terminator SE was released on DVD, there was pretty much no talk whatsoever of deleted scenes or reincorporation. Also, given that the scenes are not anamorphic on the disc leads me to believe that film elements may no longer exist, since Van Ling is usually insistent that all material be anamorphic when he's authoring. He would have been one of the ones pushing for reincorporation. Of course, it could also be that MGM wasn't willing to pay for anamorphic transferring of the material, which wouldn't be unusual.

Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I AGREE WITH YOU, JIMBO. THOSE SCENES WOULD HAVE REALLY ADDED TO THE MOVIE. HOWEVER, THEY WOULD HAVE SLOWED DOWN THE PACE OF THE MOVIE ALSO. I THINK ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS ABOUT DVDs AND IS HAVING THE DELETED SCENES. IT WOULD BE NICE IF EVERY MOVIE ON DVD HAD A REINCORPORATE FEATURE. GIVE THE VIEWER THE CHOICE OF STORY PACING.

I'm with you, DAYV. Wasn't one of the major selling points of DVD supposed to be interactivity?

Every movie having seemless branching is impossible but the thing about the Terminator is not only are those scenes better left in but it is directed by James Cameron who seems to be a fan of extended cuts. Aliens, Terminator 2, and The Abyss. The Terminator is in my opinon James Camerons best work and deserves an extended cut the most.

actually that was me who was hyping Donnie Darko... hehe
i thought it was a great movie... but i tend to like movies that are a little out of the ordinary...

such as Punch Drunk Love

I respectfully beg to differ. Cameron is not really a fan of extended cuts. The only films Cameron really wanted to do extended cuts of were The Abyss and Aliens. This is because he made both of these as a studio "hired gun" and really didn't have final cut. While Terminator came earlier, it was also an independent, which meant that his film was in its final cut as submitted to Orion for distribution. The T2 extended cut came about as a result of the recut of Aliens for LaserDisc; Cameron was happy with the theatrical cut and only did the SE as a favour to fans who wanted to see the cut scenes in the context of the film. Note that there is no extended cut of True Lies, and while there have been boundless rumours of a 4-hour (heaven forbid!) cut of Titanic, that also has yet to surface. My guess as to why we likely will not see an extended cut of Terminator is the same reason Cameron refused to be involved with T3: he does not own the rights to the property.

He didn't do Terminator 3 because he thought that Terminator 2 was the end of the series. He filmed an ending where the war was stoped. I saw this scene my opinion it was horrendous. I like the idea of the Terminator series as a neverending loop where Kyle was always his father and the future is set. But go figure he didn't want to do it. He still appears to have intrest in the first two films why he keeps creating more and more versions.

NOW I REALLY LIKE PUNCH DRUNK LOVE. ADAM SANDLER DID A GREAT JOB IN THAT MOVIE. THE PROBLEM WITH THE MOVIE ACTUALLY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FILM BUT RATHER THE PUBLIC NOT GIVING IT A CHANCE BECAUSE OF ADAM SANDLER STARRING IN THE MOVIE IN A SERIOUS/DRAMATIC ROLE.

Where are you getting this from? It's not Cameron that keeps releasing new versions of T1 and T2; it's the video companies that own the rights to them.

Cameron still makes more interviews for them and is involved in the process.

Not as involved as you would like to believe.

There are a few I have yet to see on DVD too.

1.Foul Play ... A Drama/Comedy with Goldie Hawn
2.Under the Rainbow .... Comedy starring Carrie Fisher
3.Modern Problems .... Comedy/Sci-fi starring Chevy Chase as a guy that gets super powers.
4.Hanger 18 .... Sci-Fi about A-51 and a UFO Coverup

That's to name a Few.

With a DVD burner it might be possible to create my own extended cut by cuttting those scenes in myself. I don't own a DVD burner yet but I believe this is possible.

I'm still waiting for Anchor Bay's Special Edition of The Final Countdown to finally be released.

It's not Anchor Bay; it's Blue Underground, a label that usually specialises in horror movies and cult movies. There is a connection to AB though, in that William Lustig, the director of the controversial Maniac, used to work very closely with AB but decided to start his own label. BU has released such cult films as Q: The Winged Serpent, The Toolbox Murders and God Told Me To; they've gained a reputation as a quality outfit in the DVD community. Here's a link to their site: Blue Underground
