What you're reading now: EU style — Page 3

I'm currently reading the Gundam novels. When I'm done there, I'll probably try that new Vader novel unless Outbound Flight is out. Then I'll read that.

Vector Prime. Yeah, there was a lot of controversy over the decision to kill Chewbacca. Some guys were going to the point of even sending death threats to R.A. Salvatore over that. But Lucas himself was asked permission to kill Chewbacca in the novel, and he approved of it, so...

Ive have been tempted by the EU once or twice, but never bothered, the only Star Wars novel i have ever read is Splinter of the Minds Eye all those years ago, and the only Star Wars book i own is The Star Wars Poster Book.

What do you mean by tempted? What's there to be afraid of?

Outbound Flight comes out January 30, in case you didn't know.

I remember reading, back when I was about five or six, a six-book series by Paul and Hollace Davids, the first of which was The Glove of Darth Vader, and the last was Prophets of the Dark Side. I don't remember a damn thing about them, but I remember enjoying them when I was little.

Glad you enjoyed it, because The Glove of Darth Vader is considered by a lot of people to be one of those bad apples of the EU.

I have seen books that look interesting, but not bothered buying them, because i would probably buy them and start reading them for a while, but not finish them for various reasons. so it would be a waste of money.

Well, I read them when I was about five, so I probably would dislike them now. They weren't meant to tie in with the rest of the EU, but just to give the little 'uns a taste of SW life after the movies.

Yet, I believe now, Lucasfilm has attempted to fit it into continuity with everything else, like they have done to the majority of pre-EU concept works.

HA! No, unfortunately, I haven't read all of the EU. It's massive! Surprisingly, I don't really care too much for a lot of the PT-era stories. (Though some of the Clone Wars books were pretty good.) Most of what I like in the EU are the OT/post-ROTJ era stories. Most of those early SW novels (like the ones you mentioned) really seem to carry the SW feeling better than any that have come since.

I also like the "post-ROTJ" era. It's very interesting to see how the Rebellion build the New Republic, and to see the evolution of the Empire's rests. I particulary love all those "ego-selfish-pretending-they're-gods" imperial warlords. The struggle for the power inside the Empire is really cool.

As I've already said, my favourite novel series is the "Rogue Squadron" adventures.
With so many good stories, good recurrent characters, I really think it could made an excellent TV series (animated or live). And some famous characters (as Luke) appear from time to time in the novel series. It could be a good point for a series, Mark Hamill coming in some episodes as a "guest star"...
I know I'm dreaming but, hey, I love to dream!

I like how corny things are getting in the "Splinter of the mind's eye" when it comes to technical stuff. Like the lightsaber blade stuff. Apparently in this book Luke can adjust it to the point where the blade looks like an icepick and stab locks with it, and that he has to hook up his blaster to the saber to "charge it up."

Riiiiiight....

It's good for a giggle.

Well, those blades in ANH did look pretty thin at times. Maybe Obi-Wan did the same with his saber.

Yeah, I know. I' close to starting book three. I have Dark Lord out from the library, and Outbound Flight on hold. I'll get it when it comes out. I really need to focus on Gundam though. I've left too many books unfinished, and it's not very long.

I was about halfway through Shatterpoint and had to put it down, I'm sick of Mace being in that damn jungle and I started Dark Lord last night. If it is anything like the ROTS novel it should be awesome.
If only I'd been born in the Republic.

Shatterpoint does give an odd character description of Mace - i.e. flipping the bird, among many other things (I can see Samuel Jackson as Jules doing this, but not as Mace) - and the jungle does get old after awhile.

I've never read it, but to be honest, that sounds like a pretty cool idea.

There is no lingerie in space…

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Yeah, I agree, a lot of it is so un-Mace like but I guess that is what you get in a book that really details his lif. The thing I dislike the most is how unsure of himself he is in his private notes/journal, that caught me off guard several times. Anyway, as soon as I get through with dark Lord I will go back to Shatterpoint.

Anybody else reading the Dark Nest Trilogy? I'm about two thirds of the way through the final book, and while I really liked the first two, this one has some places where it felt like Denning was going too far. Otherwise, pretty good.

Well, that's how it is in real life with a lot of people who appear to have it all together and appear to be confident.

i finished it chalts, i dont know if you will like the end or not, there are just so manything that are left hanging. love jacens evolution as a character. i have to say that since i read traitor he is not my all time favorite sw character. he is just so rich, with moral delemia, and of all the starwars characters he is the one i relate to the most.

spoilers

its crasy how luek has actually taking jacens council, throughout this trilogy, its almost as though jacen is a master, and if you think about it he pretty much is. you look at him and he is already wiser and more powerful then many of the other masters. he is wiser then corran, and probably just as powerful as kyp, and the crasy thing is he can control his own power, thats what scary. i have heard of talk about him falling completely to darkness in the up coming books, it seems he is having the same kind of character evolution as vader/ anakin. it will be interesting to see how he falls if he does, anakin fell because of his ambition and cause of his fear of losing padme. jacen doesnt have any of that same ambition, and he doesnt fear to lose the love of his life either so what makes him fall, it could be his kid but i jsut dont see it right now. it wont be the child alone.

If it happens, it will probably be a combination of trying to protect Allana and paying too much heed to Vergere's teachings and seeking that status in the Force he reached fighting Omini Jomaine.

see thats the thing about jacen, he lusts for knowledge and wisdom, not power. and thats what is so strange about it. he is like talker less green 600years youger yoda

to those refering to continuity glitches in splinter remember that in 1978 Vader was not luke skywalker's father and neither was leia his sister.

Also remember that Lucas didn't specify anything to Allan Dean Foster, other than the fact that he wanted a novel he could possibly use for a sequel, and the plot couldn't involve Han. Foster simply assumed Luke and Leia would fall in love eventually.
