What you're reading now: EU style

As the title suggests, this thread was inspired from the "What you're reading now" thread in the "other" section of the forums. So... what (if any) EU book are you reading at the moment?

I actually detest EU a great deal, and yet I have ventured into the realm of sin.

I picked up the book "Splinter of the minds eye" at my library yesterday and I'm going to read it this weekend.

The only reason I'm reading it is because I'm curious what it will say considering that it was writen in 1978 and takes a totally different turn than what happens during ESB. I just don't know how kinky things get between Luke and Leia on whatever planet that they are on.

I'm hoping that it turns out to be good read, even though the story is bunk now and it fell through the EU cracks.

I stopped reading the EU after the Jedi Academy sereies. Started reading the HAn Solo trilogy, but got bored shitless!!

Anyway, is the new Darth Vader book any good? Coz I might give that a go. When I get some spare time, which is proving rather difficult with a one year old taking up most of my spare time, that and being on the computer!!

I remember reading Splinters Of A Minds Eye when I was a kid. I don't recall much from it though.

I would love to get my hands on and read the Timothy Zahn books again...

OK, BTW, a public service announcement to everyone first: This thread is NOT for EU bashing. It is only for discussing what you may be reading in the EU and how you feel about that particular book.

OK... now... back to our regularly scheduled programming.

The thing is, the story, as far as Lucasfilm is concerned, is still in continuity. And from what I can remember, Splinter of the Mind's Eye doesn't really contradict anything that occurs later on. Yeah, there was some sexual tension between Luke and Leia, but hey, it keeps in continuity with the films that way, doesn't it?

One interesting bit of trivia about the book was that it was actually intended to be made into a low-budget sequel to ANH if it bombed at the box office as Lucas originally thought. And, as you'll see, Han isn't involved in the story, since at the time, Harrison Ford had not signed on for a sequel to ANH.

I'm actually reading "Planet of Twilight" (by Barbara Hambly).
I have some difficulties to read it, just cause I find it pretty boring... There are some good ideas, but the whole story is pretty confused and written pretty badly IMO.

Anyway, the next one for me will be one novel of the Rogue Squadron series, which I love. Good characters, good stories (for the most) and very well described space battles.

Has anyone here read Traitor, which is Matthew Stover's excellent entry to the New Jedi Order?

Not yet. I'm trying to read the novel in chronological order and haven't read any NJO novels for now.

I hated the Jedi Acadmy series, and stopped reading the Han Trilogy at the beginning, when the wookie who raised Han died. //roll eyes.

I started Tatooine Ghost awhile back, but I don't know where I left it.

Have you read his Clone Wars-era novel Shatterpoint then?

No, just cause the Clone Wars era is not yet edited in pocket books (I don't know how you call that in english) in France. Some of them have been edited in bigger format but are too expansive for me. But I'd like to read the novels from that era.

I've started reading "Cloak of Deception". The story is taking place right before TPM and is a pretty good read so far.

Here's a short snippet from the bookcover: "Mired in greed and corruption, tangled in bureaucracy, the Galactic Republic is crumbling. In the outlying systems, where the Trade Federation maintains a stranglehold on shipping routes, tensions are boiling over - and now even the comfort of Coruscant is being invaded, as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi foil an assassination attempt on Supreme Chancellor Valorum..."

Hmm...sound interesting.
Considering that the movie was BEYOND confusing (even for a 16 year old girl) that I had to buy the novelization of the TPM just so that I could understand what the hell was going on in that movie, I might want to pick this up for an afternoon read. Does this book help clear up somethings that lead in the the start of TPM?

Well I'm not through the entire book yet, but so far I'd say you get a better picture of how the tensions with the trade federation (that lead to the beginning of TPM) were building up.

Actually, I've decided to re-read the OT novels and Shadows of the Empire over the next month or so (lots of school work too). I read them when I was younger and thought it made the OT way more interesting.....before it all changed in 1999. Anyways...yeah. And Shadows of the EMpire because I loved the game, then read the book back in 1997-98 but have now have almost completely forgotten the story.

Hey look, a bear!

What is "Traitor" about? Wait, isn't Stover the same guy that did the novelization for ROTS? Personally, I felt that his writing was weaker compared to the other two authors who wrote the TPM and AOTC novelizations. His work seemed to "prose-y" instead of reading like a gripping novel.

I just saw a blerb on-line - is this a radio drama? It talked about narration and sound FX and music by John Williams. If that is true, I would totally snatch up that CD rather than the book.

He was lying to Luke in ANH. No need for the EU to explain that.

Well, he would have appeared as an even bigger ashole to Luke if he would have told Luke the truth.

im just uncomfortable with the idea of obi wan having to lie about everything

My take on this whole ordeal is that Obi-Wan was ashamed of his failure of saving Anakin from Sidious. He also may have been reluctant to admit that he couldn't bring it over his heart to perform a coup-de-gras on Vader. Bottom line: Even Jedi are human (even the alien raced ones).
