What were your original expectations for the PT? — Page 2

I just meant that I like ROTS and I also understand why people dislike it.Matter of taste and opinion.I am just tired of the whining and the bitching and the endless nitpicking.Like you say there must be something more productive to do!
I certainly see aspects of this particular forum such as the fan edits and the preservations as being a wholly more heartening thing than the incessant bashing of the PT and the moaning about George doing this or that.I wish I had the talent and ability to do the work that a lot of the guys around here do.I very much admire the dedication of a lot of you guys.

Yeah, I was specifically trying to avoid another conversation about the PT that was released, but I guess they all end up in the same place.

I heartily enjoyed reading about each of your visions of Star Wars before the the picture got filled in.

I dont know. Iguess I thought it was just another project for George Lucas, but then when I saw the phantom menace I thought it looked cool, but six years later the only installment of the PT I enjoyed(for a while) was the phantom menace.

Having watched the OT numerous times between 1996 and 1999, I went into Episode 1 with a bit of optimism. What can I say, I was impressionable. I bought into the pre-release hype, the silly fast food promotions at places like Pizza Hut (in fact, there's a really old picture of me posing with a Jar-Jar Binks cutout at a Pizza Hut), and I went into the film expecting a lot of long lines. When I saw it, I couldn't understand what was going on in the film. I liked the end fight, but I practically groaned out loud when widdle Anakin Skywalker goes "Yippee!" and blows up a ship by himself. That was really weak. I went to see II and III more out of loyalty to the brand then anything else.

I worked at Pizza Hut during the Phantom Menace madness. We all got to dress like prequel characters for work. It was pretty fun. And, before the movie came out.

Personally, I wanted to see the friendship between Anakin and Obi-Wan... I also wanted the movies to be darker, much likeThe Empire Strikes Back. I also wished to see the gradual turn of Anakin into hating himself, to the point of being almost suicidal and psychotic. LEt's be honest, the main reason why people become corrupted in hatred is because they have no love for themselves and blame themselves for things in their life...

I hope not!

...To get back onto the subject, I would have liked to see Anakin be more of a Hamlet/MacBeth-like character... Someone who is complicated, and in the end, finds that they are their own pending doom...

Also, I wish that Darth Maul was a charater that was more explored. By this I mean that I wish he spoke more, and had more depth (much like Vader).

Yeah I also think Maul should have played the main bad guy throughout the PT, at least well into the second or to the first of the third.

Yes, and Anakin should have become Vader earlier than Episode 3 and General Grevious SHOULD NOT EXIST! Plus, did anyone think it weird that the Emperor had a lightsaber and was a Sith Lord?? I sincerely wanted to see Yoda with a lightsaber, but that was ridiculous.

Yea, the multiple Darths throughout the PT did get kinda lame and it's almost as if it was there just so Lucas could conveniently work his way From Darth Maul and Darth Sidious (and the backstory of Darth Bane) in TPM to Darth Tyrannus in AOTC to the backstory of Darth Plaguis to Anakin being dubbed Darth Vader by the emperor in ROTS. Correct me if I'm wrong, but whether or not it was implied that Vader wasn't the only Darth, he was the only Darth we knew about until TPM was made. I didn't like finding out that the Emperor was also a Darth. There was one Darth too many in TPM.

Yeah, Darth now seems lke such a "meh" title since Lucas overused the living hell out of it.

I will always respect and enjoy the Prequels for what they are, even if I like them less than the OT.

I agree with most of your perceptions though, and I just couldn't help but wonder if they would have been better if Anakin had of been a teen in EPI, Darth Maul is the main baddie in all of them, and then in EPIII Anakin cuts down Maul in revenge (Sith concept) over Qui-Gonn and then takes his place at the Emperor's side...seems so simple it would have worked...

I enjoy the prequels despite their flaws.I,as I have said, really enjoyed ROTS.Certainly they didn't live up to my expectations but let's be honest we are not an easy bunch to please.Would anything he had released actually have lived up to all our collective expectations? Our expectations for them were probably so colossal that a let-down was inevitable. All in all though I like the extended story and scope of the whole saga nowEven though the OT will always, obviously,be paramount for me and in particular ANH.My collection mainly focuses on ANH for a reason.

The Prequels met some of my expectations, though I was dissapointed in TPM for a long time, I liked the other two more or less from the day I first I saw them at the cinema. I think there are flaws in the films and there a few things I would have liked to have seen maybe done differently but I find them entertaining and thats one thing I wanted from these films so they succecced in that aspect.

I had the opposite problem, each installment was more dissapointing than than the last; yet I tried to convince myself that I liked them.
And about the Emperor, now AKA Darth Sidious, was it implied in ROTJ that he was a sith lord??

My original expectations were that we'd see, over the course of 3 movies, how Anakin went from a regular person to the greatest evil the galaxy had ever known. I honestly didn't expect much else. I didn't know we'd see him as a kid and not starting straight as a Jedi. When Qui-Gon asked "Who was his father?" I thought "oh, awesome, icing on the cake". And then Shmi's response came and I thought "huh, wth?" I also expected to see more Jedi throughout the PT, not just in AOTC and ROTS.

One thing I agree with a lot of people here on is that Anakin should've been more evil and definitely dark side in AOTC. His sudden switch in ROTS was only made better by ADM's fanedit. In fact, the original story had a much better switch point (where Palpatine reveals himself to Anakin), but George said he changed it because it was to soon. No, actually, it was the perfect spot. But anyway.

I think I expected a lot of things to be cleared up. Things like "There's something familiar about this place", "I must obey him", "And he was a good friend". After AOTC came out, a friend of mine said "WTH? They were never friends so what's up with the line in ANH?" This is plain to anyone that watches them in the order of release. Even in the comics, Obi-Wan was constantly on Anakin's case. That, to me, is not much of a friend. I was also hoping for a better explanation of why 3PO didn't remember Tattooine even though as ROTS got closer it became more apparent that a memory wipe was in store for him.

What I never expected was that as the PT moved along, the Star Wars galaxy would become smaller and smaller, to the point where Yoda and Chewbacca are now friends. Was that really necessary? How about instead of blowing the screen time and that one little scene, we show Yoda go to Dagobah and maybe explain why he went to Dagobah. Nah, can't do that.

Oh well, now I just pretend they don't exist.

Pretty much. I'd deny the existence of the Holiday Special too if I were him. I wanted to see that for so long when I heard about it. Then, after I did see it, I wished I could unsee it.

So what's worse- the SW holiday special, TPM, AOTC, ROTS, the SE OT, the 04 DVD OT, or non-anamorphic OOT?

How about "D: All of the above."

So, what is being said is that the Holiday special is worse than the PT. This holiday special must be very bad if the PT is unwatchable.

It is absolutely god awful. I know what you're thinking, "eh, those guys are just being sarcastic, I think I'll go ahead and watch it." Please, for the love of all that is holy, DO NOT WATCH IT!!!
