What was so Godawful about The Force Unleashed?

The first one, I mean. The sequel is terrible, over dramatized fanfiction that breaks continuity inbetween TFU and ANH, but I digress.

To me it’s a more sensible and enjoyable adventure than anything in the PT. I don’t really care for the majority of the EU, but the fact that TFU was dissolved from the extended canon in favor of Star Wars Rebels irks me a bit.

Vader’s a menacing, double crossing villan as he should be, pulling the strings from the beginning. Starkiller’s got a great emotional conflict sans the boring factor/melodrama. Proxy’s probably one of my favorite EU characters, and the concept of him being programmed to both obey his master and kill him without feeling conflicted at all is really great to me. All the main characters feel more alive and fleshed-out than anyone in the PT, and we already knew who they were before going into those movies.

Yes, the DLC is terrible, yes the game consists almost entirely of just hitting guys with the lightsaber level after level, but the question remains. I’m not trying to justify my own opinion against the rest, I’m just genuinely curious. I’ve never seen more hatred centralized around a single piece of the EU. What went wrong?

EDIT: In Hindsight the way this is written makes me sound a lot more passionate about this than I really am. It’s a silly little game, I’m just wondering why people seem to lament it’s existence so often

TFU severely crapped on the two main OT characters: Vader and Emperor. The idea alone that some random guy would beat any of them is beyond stupid.

I’ve wondered the same Swazzy. It’s always seemed to me the most vocal critics never even bothered to play it.

The Force powers are sillier than the PT and that takes some doing.

Repeat to yourself, it’s just a video game, I should really just relax. 😉

Where were you in '77?

I never played it myself so I don’t have a very strong opinion. I played the demo, and like others mentioned, was quickly turned off by the ridiculously strong force powers. It just didn’t jive with what I liked about the force in the OT (amazingly powerful when you thought about it, but so subtle you could almost miss it if you weren’t paying attention). Also, like so much of Star Wars since the mid 90’s the Force was severely lacking in the mysticism aspect it had in the 70’s and 80’s that was so crucial in making it so interesting.

I dunno if I’m doing a good job of explaining it. I’m not always good at using words to explain feelings. But back in the day, the force had a certain feeling to it and The Force Unleashed (based on the demo I played) failed to capture that feeling. I really have no idea how the final game turned out, but the demo was enough to make me completely apathetic and have no desire to even try the final game.

The Force in the OT feels more like sorcery/ESP. The Force in the PT (and its derivatives) feels like superpowers.

I think it’s a fun video game but that it doesn’t belong in the canon.
