Does anyone here like to visit cemeteries? If so, have you ever found a favorite tombstone/marker and what is it?

Actually I've visited a cemitery (same one) about 3 times my whole life, I've never been to a funeral, and I don't think I ever will, except for my own. I don't know what my reaction would be when losing a close, loved one, everyone who has died in my family was someone I never talked to. I suppose I've been kinda lucky so far.

My favorite one was one I've seen in one of my rare cemitery visits, a japanese man (judgin by his last name) who died in the late 50s, and we see there was supposed to be a picture of him on the tombstone, but it was missing. It was kinda sad, like, no one remembered him, or even bothered to put his pic back. In a way, his face was missing forever, and we'll never know who was that man...

That is sad. I hate seeing vandalized cemeteries. I've run into way too many of them. My grad school thesis was an online cemetery so I visited a ton of cemeteries and took a lot of photographs. I love cemeteries. I find them very peaceful. Easy place to go to in order to have some time where you can just think in complete solitude.

My favorite memorial was to a girl who died in my wife's old neighborhood. Outside their high school, they put a granite bench with her name on it. I liked how it kinda acts like a meeting place for everyone. They can sit there and it fosters a sense of community and whatnot.

I don't think it was vandalized, there's no reason for it, I belive it got loose with time.

That's kinda sad and sweet at the same time... I wonder if I would get a bench with my name, if I died during high school... Probably not.

It was a very cool memorial. Apparently, she was a very popular girl. No question about how beautiful a girl she was. Her picture was on her gravestone which I have visited and photographed as well.

Has anyone here ever had the chance to visit a cemetery in New Orleans? They are such a surreal place to go. Since New Orleans is effectively a swamp, they cannot dig down the customary six feet to bury people. So everyone is entombed in mausoleums. It's like a mini city walking through all these ornate mausoleums. Sad thing, though, is that so many of them are vandalized and these cemeteries are the most notorious place for muggings because there are so many places for people to hide. Sad really. But they are beautiful.

I don't think I ever want to be in a funeral, unless my presence really necessary, I have no idea what my reaction would be after founding out a loved one died, and seeing his/hers corpse on a coffin, I think I'd freak out. I'm more scared of other people's death than my own.

I've looked into coffins on many occasions. It may be a bit freaky but it is a good way to say goodbye. You just pray for a mortician who doesn't overdo the makeup. That can be tricky.

It's not the "looking at dead people" thing, I'm ok by that. It's the "looking at a loved one corpse" thing I've a problem with. I could go to a funeral if I'm not familiar with the dead person - altough I'm not even sure what to do on a funeral, and what to say. I could do like my father, who once mistankenly "congratulated" the dead man's wife - lucky she didn't hear or didn't notice.

These are people I know and love. I'm not gonna walk in on a stranger's memorial service.

Well I mean not an absolute stranger, it could be a co-worker you barely knew, or an aunt you never met...

Those I'd likely stay away from as well. Unless my wife knew the person. Then I'd go.

I've been to a few funerals. The latest one was when my grandpa died last September.

The hardest part was when I got up and read an 8-page story for him next to his casket. And he had a big family that was looking on, so you can imagine how nervous I was.

But when I was done everyone applauded. I felt proud of myself and I'm sure my grandfather was too! Out of all the people who were there, including his many brothers and sisters, I was the only one who said anything.

I applaud your courage, SES. I'm not sure if I'd be able to do that or not.

I know I wouldn't if I had to improvise as I spoke. Reading it would be a little bit easier, but not much...
