What is the most distressing aspect of the PT? — Page 2

I agree with ronlaw in this summed up way: the PT was horrible due to too many "yes-men" at Lucasfilm enabling an incompetent writer/director.

That's what I find most distressing. The story itself was not fatally flawed, but ruined by crappy realization.
Nobody to tell GL that not every word in the script was a gem. That making Anakin a nine-year-old, then hiring a terrible child actor, was not a great descision. Or maybe tossing all the add-on junk (midichlorians, Jar Jar), might tighten up the story. The list goes on and on.

Oh yeah, the midichlorians. I forgot all about them. Yeah, they suck too.

And thank you Hot_Rod. Nice to know I'm not the only one who saw that Episode 1 failed to properly build any kind of friendship between Obi-Wan and Anakin.

You're not the only one. I thought all three movies failed miserably despite Lucas's efforts to "tack on" little scenes to plug up that hole.

And the moment I heard "midichlorians" spoken in TPM, I was devastated. It utterly destroyed Star Wars and the mystique of the Force.

Story-wise, I think ROTS is a real let-down. Count Dooku is supposed to be the 8-ball of the Clone Wars, and he's killed off right at the start. Then they introduce Grevious.

I think ROTS would have been better if they'd stuck with their original story ideas. And had the ending be less like a powerpoint presentation. (And have Padme move to Alderaan at the end! WHY DIDN'T THEY DO THAT?)

My stance on revising fan edits.

I agree. Glad you posted, and nice signature.

Hmm...this is a tough question. I think probably the things that grate on me worst are the digital/CGI look of AOTC and ROTS as opposed to TPM, and the handling of the Obi-Wan/Anakin dynamic in the last third of ROTS. Whatever happened to "Obi-Wan once thought as you do"?

Anakin's "virgin" birth.

Jesus? Not even close. It's like he couldn't WAIT to slaughter children.

Midichlorians. Unquestionably. We took the concept of a mystical force that can be communed with by anybody who believes and trains their mind and turned it into a 4400 ability, attainable to only those with the right level of nanoscopic thingies in their bloodstream. It was as if to say achieving zen has nothing to do with your state of mind, but how much brown rice is in your diet.

I agree with most that has been posted previous.

First, I would have loved to see the Darth Maul character explored more. Someone should of mentioned to Lucas to keep one ongoing villian throughout the trilogy, and not keep on introducing a new one every movie. In layman terms, it´s just plain sloppy storytelling.

Second, I like special effects, but CGI, to me, looks too real. When CGI is done well, especially with models, it looks okay (a good example of such is the LOTR´s trilogy). But, by itself, it looks too much like a video game.

For me, being a writer myself, I find the lack of any real story or character development in the PT disturbing... I know that most of the audience already knows the ending (i.e. Anakin being darth Vader, redemption from Luke, etc.). However, there could have been a few GOOD surprises thrown in there... Fondness for the characters lacked for me. I really did not like Anakin. I could care less about Mace Windu. Padme was blank. Even Yoda at times was about as wooden as Pinocchio. The only character I enjoyed watching on the screen for the PT was Ewan Mcgregor´s Obi Wan (and that´s a complement to his acting abilities, not the script itself).

Hell, one can find better plot, story, diologue and character development in the K.o.t.O.R. video games...

Rarely will I say this, but I totally agree with Sean Wookie.

I've read through this and thought about it, and I think that for me, it really has to be the blatant disdain for the original trilogy--which covers everything from Qui-Gonn and not Obi-Wan finding Anakin to the replacement of Shaw with Hayden in the RotJ DVD.

Not to say that the other stuff mentioned--midichlorians, awful plot, awful dialogue, awful performances (with the obvious exceptions of Palpatine and Obi-Wan)--isn't awful, but a lot of it (especially the midichlorians) is part and parcel of the disdain for the OT.

Who is Shawn Wookie? (Thank you for agreeing with me, though!)

The fact that it expects me to pretend that Darth Vader is actually a completely dishonorable, selfish crybaby underneath his mask. What a prick Anakin was!

I have a question.

I posted this on here a couple of years ago, but it didn´t get much of a response.

I have an observation that seems a bit odd between the original 1978 Superman and Episode II. In the funeral scene near the beginning of Superman, after Clark Kent´s earthy father (Glenn Ford´s character) dies of a heart attack, Kent says something to the effect of, ¨All these powers, and I couldn´t save him...¨ Now, watch (but only with extreme caution!) Episode II´s funeral scene with Anakin speaking about his mother Shmi... Correct me if I´m wrong, but I believe the lines are almost exactly the same (i.e. ¨All my powers couldn´t save her...¨). Has anyone else noticed this?

I don´t know if it´s plagerism, Lucas not being original, or mere coincidence... Any thoughts?

Probably not quite enough to be plagiarism. It was a much more moving scene in Superman. Superman is one of my favorite films (EpII is not).

Maybe it was subconscious on GL's part.

Well, in episode 3 it is well noted that Lucas ripped off the Godfather(the death of the Jedi) and Frankenstein(Vader saying nooooo!)

Leonard part 6 would be more watchable than the PT. Those parodies are great

The fact that they were actually titled Star Wars is the most distressing aspect.

Here's something I was thinking about a couple of days ago (I don't often ponder the PT since it's mostly crap).

Yoda pretty much saw or felt what Anakin did to the Tusken Raiders. So why wasn't Anakin punished for what he did? Maybe it's in one of the books that takes place between Ep2 and Ep3, but I was just wondering why the little shit didn't get punished for what was essentially a lot of senseless murdering.
