What is the deal with NFO files?

Author

I never understood why downloaded files like to have NFO files versus a strait text file. I usually rename it to RTF and open it that way. When I try to open it before the rename it tries to open the file with the "System "Information" program and of course it doesn't open the file because it's not really that type of file. No "official" product has an nfo file. Is there some kind of "law" that everything that is a "bootleg" so to speak must have this nfo file? I think a regularly named text file would be better.

Don't know why myself. I used to just rename it as a .txt file. But since then, I've downloaded the so-called "DAMN NFO Viewer" and it works fine.

You may also try "open with" and then "always open with", so inf files will be opened with for example wordpad. Who needs inf files as system information anyway?

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

Infinitely better. There's a reason they spend so much time on the ascii art.

Well at least I wasn't the only confused one. Though I did think you wee swearing at me for a second. Like just get that g*d damn nfo viewer already. The art does look a lot better using this damn thing, (hehe) but it's abit hard to read. Too small text.

I always open them with Firefox. Maybe I should seek out this GDNfo viewer

Some of the NFO artwork images are stunning given the medium used. Respect to them guys.

"I set all .nfo files to open in wordpad. No additional program needed. "

Same here, though I prefer Notepad.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Good point.

Ah... Reminds me of the old BBS'ing days.

Doesn't seem to be as many upper-ascii-encoded nfos as there used to be though.

I got the System Information file horsecrap after I installed the M$ rtf utility. (Has anyone actually encountered a System Information file?) Took me a while to find a tip on how to make the open-with stick. But I think I like the Damn Nfo idea better. It ran well when I tested it on a ye olde Athlon 500. And I like the idea of setting the foreground & background colors - makes it easier on the eyes than black upon white.

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.

Download shows from Cable DVR (Updated! Yes, it needs a rewrite, but it's worth slogging through, anyway).
