What if??? (Star Wars Reboot)

Author
Time

With all this Han Shot First discussion, I've pretty much given up on Mr. Lucas ever restoring the Original Trilogy. Which made me think... A lot of movies from when we were kids are getting the "reboot" treatment a la Star Trek. What if someone rebooted the Star Wars franchise, who would we like to see play the main characters?

Luke Skywalker

Princess Leia

Han Solo

Obi-Wan

... and others.

Let's have fun with this, and stop the Han Shot First discussion (since they are not going anywhere). You first!

Well I can't help thinking that with all the rights to the franchise still in certain hands, any reboot would be tragic.  So here is my list of "tragic" casting choices.

Luke Skywalker: Daniel Radcliffe
Princess Leia: Lindsay Lohan
Han Solo: Seth Rogen
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Ewan McGregor
Darth Vader: George Lucas (because the trilogy is all about him)

C-3PO, R2-D2, Yoda, and Jabba would be CGI, of course.

I think you could argue in favor of Lucas at least reshooting the original trilogy (to perfectly capture his "original vision") if it'd motivate him to release the unaltered trilogy. That's a compromise I could live with, esp as likely nobody would give two craps about the reshot/rebooted/whatever new "original" trilogy.

Oh, to dream...

All I really want is each film as it was originally seen and heard in theaters; no fixes, corrections, "improvements" or modifications necessary.

I really think what would help more than a reboot is just a hibernation period for Star Wars. One of things that prevented the franchise from getting too over-saturated to an audience was that it more or less went quiet from 84-91. As it is we've had an explosion of material for 20 years now from a multitude of comics, endless books, a cavalcade of games, 3 of the original films re-released in theaters, 4 new movies over 9 years, with 6 movies to be re-released in 3D, and two television shows, with another on its way.

Now its never going to happen because there's way too much of a cottage industry to pretty much everything Star Wars related now, but in an ideal world there would be a period where the franchise could effectively step away for a bit, recharge its batteries, and maybe when it comes back, a new creative force could oversee it.

Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, Doctor Who, Rambo, and Tron all come to mind.

Luke Skywalker: Zac Efron

Princess Leia: Emma Watson

Han Solo: James Roday

Obi-Wan Kenobi: Hugh Laurie

_____

It could work and have a fun chemistry. Granted I'm trying to stay close to the original characters. And while I generally have disdain for Efron (and his eyebrows), he does seem to have some ability for acting as a wide-eyed and eager kid.

The blue elephant in the room.

I agree that the franchise has been over-saturated with content, and I believe a clean slate would be nice.

But if one was done, I can only image what kind of constraints it would have on the story as it would have to keep things that have happened in the comics, shows and other movies relevant, but hey.

Star Trek got away with, at least I think it did for the most part.

If one did happen, I wonder in what order they'd be rebooted? I wouldn't mind if they started with "Phantom Menace", but likely the films would be rebooted in order of release - and in the process anger many, many, many, many, many fans in the process.

I only want the new trilogy rebooted, but I honestly cannot see it rebooted for at least 20+ years.

Optimistically, 15 years.

Will Yoda be played by Miss Bliss?  ...and as this is a reboot shouldn't we be using 'The New Class' cast...

Every role played by Barry Humphries or the deal's off.

If I could have access to any actor from any era at any time in his/her life, these are the actors I'd pick for a rebooted saga:

Ewan McGregor - Obi-Wan Kenobi

Leonardo DiCaprio - Anakin Skywalker

Hayden Christensen - Young Darth Vader

Matt Lanter - Young Darth Vader's voice

Jane Fonda - Mother Skywalker

Clive Revill - Palpatine's voice

Djimon Hounsou - Mace Windu

And that's all I've got.

Lando is Mace Windu's son? This universe is shrinking by the minute.

I was going to say that Bingowings should play Obi-wan, but then I remembered Alec Guinness was only 68 when ANH was filmed.  Perhaps he could play Yoda instead and leave TV's Frink the Ben Kenobi role.

It is funny you should say that because when I'm not accused of being my older partner's father or my mother's partner I'm sometimes accused of sounding like Sir Alec.

I can't hear it myself.

That could work, it makes a lot more sense than something really stupid like casting him as Ford Prefect, heaven forbid that should happen.

Eddie Murphy: entire cast.

Yes! Except the kid from the Golden Child shows up as Yoda.

I know we've talked about this before, but I'd love to play.

Obi Wan Kenobi- Ken Wattanabe

Darth Vader- (Voice) Phillip Quast

Han Solo- Tom Hardy

For what it's worth, I think Mos Def would make a pretty decent Han, but he's a bit old for it.

A lot of the actors mentioned seem a bit long in the tooth to play these parts intended for younger people.
