What do you LIKE about the EU? — Page 7

I really enjoyed the Tales books despite the fact that everything gets tied in together. (Maybe that was the strength of it.)

Seeing that POTF2 figure info card brings back memories.

They're really just stories about what each individual was doing prior to that one day in their lives which we saw in Star Wars. In fact, that's what I find most interesting about it.

They're all at a chance intersection for an afternoon, but they have little (if any) involvement with each other.  A friend of Greedo's mentions seeing Solo across the room talking to an old man and a kid, but they get up and leave after a few minutes. It's a simple, nothing observation to them while they're sitting in a bar having a drink.  Yet to us, it's one of the most pivotal points of the entire story.

Real life is like that.  You and your friends may be in a bar after work surrounded by strangers, yet each stranger has a path that led them to be in that same bar at precisely the same moment as you.

You may see a guy walk by and think, if only as an afterthought, "...nice shoes".  However, he may have chosen them to make a nice impression on someone who had a lead on a job that he may get, which may change the course of his entire life.

Nothing to you - huge in the life of someone who just happens to be in the same place at the same time.  I think it's an interesting concept for a book of short stories.

^ makes me want to go back and read them again. I think I have all of the "Tales" books. Gonna have to find them, at least the cantina one.

So where did it all go wrong? Is there an easy spot to pigeonhole as the downturn that led to where the EU is now?

I'd say it started going down the crapper when TPM was released and when Del Rey took over the books.

I like a lot of the EU. I think the massive non-film-story presence is part of what makes Star Wars so great many times (though it can be a curse).

I liked most of the pre-Travissty expansion on Boba Fett. It really did build off the mystique and intrigue of the character (though I never liked the idea he was Jaster Mereel). Same is true for the Mandalorians. I loved the Open Seasons series, too.

I've been reading through all of the novels I can get my hands on in chronological (in-universe) order recently, and I'm just now getting up to The Phantom Menace, and I must say they've all been fairly enjoyable reads. The Jedi Apprentice series was pretty good, the Darth Bane books were quite good as well.

By far the best Star Wars book, and one of the best books period, that I've ever read was "The Life and Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi". Just an absolutely fantastic read, and very emotional as well. It really makes you feel for Obi-Wan, and ties the PT and OT together as well. Imagining Luke reading about the Clone Wars gave me chills, I have to say.

I also liked Shadows of the Empire, even though it's a pretty poorly-written book.

And lets not forget KOTOR. Probably one of the consistent best pieces of Star Wars EU out there, both the games and the comics, and the novels. Not many things have captured the feel of Star Wars as well as KOTOR.

Of course, on the flipside of that you have books where they do poorly. Some of the one-off short stories I've read in my novel quest have been lame. Even some of the larger series like the New Jedi Order stuff is pretty bad (you just don't kill Chewie, sorry), and, of course, like I mentioned before, Karen Traviss can just fuck right off.

So, I mean, there's the bad, and there's the good. It all adds to your personal canon, or it doesn't. Either way, there's a whole other window into the Star Wars universe in the EU that's really fascinating, and I don't think it should be missed.

Just a general EU question here.  What is the feeling toward Timothy Zahn's take on the EU?  Just from looking back through this thread, it seems somewhat positive.

I ask because I'm reading Hammertong right now and I'm really digging it so far.  Not that I need any more EU just yet.  I haven't even finished this one and still have one more to read, but I'm digging the expansion of my Star Wars universe.

I know I'm in the minority, but I have problems with Zahn's storytelling.

Without spoilers.

The main villain, evil genius Grand Admiral Thrawn is nifty enough, but it's plain that Zahn likes him more than he likes our heroes from the OT. Thrawn is smarter, cooler, and better than they are, and in his later works Zahn makes it clear Thrawn is more moral, farsighted, and noble than the "heroes."

Ultimately I dislike that Luke and company are mere observers for Zahn's new characters to go about their business, and can only occasionally comment on how cool Thrawn is.

They could be better, but I liked how the Thrawn trilogy revitalized the spirit of Star Wars. And without Heir there really wouldn't be an EU. Zahn's Thrawn duology was similar. (anything with Mara Jade can't be that bad..) But things like Outbound Flight put me to sleep. Allegiance was one of the only good modern EU books that I can think and that has a sequel due this year.

And now Heir to the Empire has a 20th Anniversary edition. Crap.

From what I've seen, most Star Wars fans seem to think Zahn is a pretty good writer, even the fans that aren't EUphiles. I for one think he's a cut above the typical EU writer.

He does have too much of a hard on for Thrawn, though; the character features heavily in most of his stories, and perhaps it's time he moved on to focus on other characters.

Expect a 200 volume saga on the tragedy of Darth Thrawn sometime in the next two decades (you read it here first kids).

Looking just at Zahn's Star Wars novel list, there seems to be several that might be good reads. Looking at a few non-spoiler write-ups, some of these sound interesting.

Heir to the Empire
Dark Force Rising
The Last Command
Specter of the Past
Vision of the Future
Survivor's Quest
Outbound Flight
Allegiance

Are these Prequel\Annikin\Padme heavy?  The write-ups make it sound like they're more about the OT characters later in life, which could be very interesting.

Apologies ahead of time, I'm an EU newb.

Most of his stuff was written pre-PT. His newer books, like Outbound Flight, which is a prequel book, are more PT-heavy.

He's a pretty excellent writer, though. Very good books.

Im a fan of Zahn, ive read all of those listed by Anchor except for Allegiance. They were all decent enough to read.

What's ya'lls take on Talon Karrde? Didnt Zahn come up with him too? I think he's a pretty cool character.

Anyone ever read the Corellian Trilogy? I remember reading that one and liking it. Its pre pt and set when Leia and Han have the 3 kids. It wasnt too bad.

My take is that he looks a helluva lot like Bruce Campbell with long hair and a mustache.

The Zahn trilogy was an interesting idea at the time, basically to turn Star Wars into airport books, for adults to read the way they would read Tom Clancy or whatever. That was fine to do for 3 books when they were only coming out once a year. But after that they just went nuts cranking this stuff out and it became comical that all this shit kept happening to these people. They're like O.J. in Naked Gun. Looking back, I think the Daley Han Solo books and some of the old marvels had the right idea, to do these smaller, more lighthearted, low-stakes stories.

Sounds like you've really been on a kick to branch out lately. I generally don't like EU novels with few exceptions, but I love the first three Zahn books. Those are good reads, all about Luke, Han, Leia, and the gang several years after Return of the Jedi. Specter and Vision continue the story a few years later, I heard they are good, but have never read them.

From all I have heard, pretend the others don't exist.

I also always liked Shadows of the Empire, which most people hate. But I think falling in love with the video game and the story has a lot to do with that. I actually haven't read the book since it came out, so I don't remember how bad it was in writing. Every so often I listen to the abridged audio book, my preferred way to experience the story. It leaves a lot out and cuts the story down to the very basics, but I think it does an excellent job of doing so.

The Tales of books have been others that have always stood out to me. Personally, I think they get silly at times, but that is to be expected from any anthology of short sci-fi stories. Surprisingly, my favorite of these was Tales of the Bounty Hunters.

I was a teenager when I read any of these last, Revenge of the Sith (love the way it is written, story still sucks though) being the only SW novel I have attempted to read as an adult (if you exclude listening to the full unabridged audiobook of Attack of the Clones). So, I might feel differently about them if I were to encounter any of them today.

I'd say give Heir to the Empire a chance, if you don't mind reading a story where you have to take the events of Empire and Jedi into account, it can't hurt.

From now on Bruce Campbell plays Talon Karrde in my head! Thanks Durecell E., this makes me very happy.

Count me among the "most people". It was cheaply written, half of the book doesn't make sense in context, character motivations are 100% wrong, and I think the worst thing you can do with the first book that doesn't include Han Solo is to include a character exactly like Han.

Kaarde was "played" by Zahn himself for a Decipher card.

That's Shannon Baksa as Mara Jade and Michael A. Stackpole as Corran Horn, too.

On the topic of SOTE, it'll always have a place in my heart as "good Star Wars", even though it really isn't the best. I played the game to death, and read the book dozens of times. I think the "multimedia campaign" really did a good job of sticking it in my head.
