What do you HATE about the EU? — Page 3

Author

While I don't hate them, I really dislike a lot of the covers Drew Struzan painted for a lot of the EU novels in the 90's. Far too many of them just looked like alternate movie posters for the OT films, and they rarely reflected the plots of actual stories inside.

Is it possible that's what they were?

Well, it's possible that some of them were, though a lot of times the different floating heads of the characters were taken from each of the different films (TESB Leia's head here, ROTJ Luke's head there, etc).

I'll be so happy if Marvel destroys Legacy!!!!!!

So glad you got your wish that Legacy II is cancelled as well as Brian Wood's star wars line?

No news but i also assume Dawn of the Jedi is gone as well.

To make way for Marvel shit.  The x-men comics have been absolute shit since Disney took over. They still got some great artists, but the writing is crap.

I expect star wars comics that are not overly violent, are safe and kiddy and in no way dynamic.  The Marvels have stayed violent but i see Disney sees star wars as a kiddie line.  Look at Rebels its very kiddie.

I suspect any ongoing comic series will be cancelled. After all, has any comic company immediately picked up a series that another company began and continued it where they left off?

While its a rare thing it happens.  IDW and Simon Furman picked up and continued the continuity of the Marvel Transformers comics.

Which pretty much pretend the series never was cancelled and generation 2 never happened.

I do wonder though about Disney Lucasfilm.  Will they have a new EU spun off from the movies.  Or avoid such a distinction altogether and have the new marvel comics and rebels in the same continuity as the sequel trilogy.

I hate B'omarr monks. Can't a spider thing just be a spider thing?

Spider Thing! Spider Thing! Does whatever a Spider Thing can.

Frightens prissy protocol droids.

Sneaks out the palace door.

Look out! Here comes a Spider Thing!

Well, it was never actually named on screen. I didn't even know it had a proper name until it became a hard to get action figure.

I am not sure if its true but i think i read that a lot of continuity the novels later used, Zahn and going forward came from the West End Games stuff.

But it could also be  that an action figure card created the continuity.

How much leeway in such things was Kenner given anyway in the old days?

So the spider thing's brain comes from a monk -- what's the big deal? It's not like this revelation undermines its characterization or anything.

When the line was revived in the 90's, it was the also when every thing that ever walked or crawled it's way across the screen in the background of the OT got a formal name and a backstory. I think Kenner went with what they were given.

The Monk was a mail away figure, and I don't think it ever came out carded.

Remember when those weird guys in the cantina were simply Snaggletooth, Hammerhead, and WalrusMan? I kind of miss that simplicity.

The big deal is that the spider thing's brain was clearly meant to simply be a droid brain, not an organic brain. And the brain coming from a monk is an example of KJA's obsession with every little thing being ancient and awesome.

Clearly meant to be a droid brain? In what way does this

look like a droid brain?

No kidding, it looks pretty organic to me.

EDIT: Well, maybe not pretty--it's kind of ugly actually.

Of all of the things about the EU that I hate, I hate the melodrama the most.  Drama doesn't have to be cheesy.

Disney have organised a 'committee' to determine this issue it seems... -

and  http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/star-wars-spinoffs-will-matter-668958

(Whatever these guys decide, I'll continue to choose my *own* preferred 'personal canon' where 'Star Wars' is concerned, just as I do with the 'Alien' and 'Star Trek' franchises amongst others) ;)

No time to discuss this in committee! ;)

I've only just noticed that DominicCobb and yourself had already mentioned two other articles about this development a couple of days ago over on the 'General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread'.  So I'll just stick those links here too, for anyone following this particular thread -

I just hope Disney is clear as to what the official canon is.

I hate the new DC comics. They 'rebooted' or something, and then say "WAIT AND SEE WHAT FROM THE LAST 70 YEARS IS OFFICIAL BACKSTORY!" as if that's an exciting selling point.

Wanting to know which of the guys who hang out with Batman used to be Robin isn't a fascinating plot point.

If I read a comic about the future of Star Wars, and I don't know if the "New Jedi Order" series happened or not is just confusing.

Well said. Canon is useless if it's unknown to the reader.

I wish the sequel trilogy  was built upon the original canon.  I mean the original 3 films from 1977, 1980 and 1983.

Not the 1997 version, not the 2004 version or the 2011 version.

They won't match anyway no matter which versions.  A 2015  cgi laden film is not going to match a film made in 1983.
