What do you HATE about the EU? — Page 2

IIRC, the conversation in question took place in Padme's apartment.

Oh, gee. What the heck? For some bizarre reason I woke up thinking Artoo had shown Luke the Force-choking scene on Mustafar. I went back and re-read Tack's post. You're right.

I might be thinking of a fan-fiction I read years ago.

Well, force choking must push somebody's buttons out there. ;)

On the flip side of the coin, I could believe there was a fragment or two of something in Artoo's memory. He's probably recorded and erased a lot of messages in his travels.

I actually like some of the early efforts from Russ Manning and Archie Goodwin. It was a simpler time. The stories are often a lot of fun, and allow for some creative things modern SW wouldn't allow.

For instance, a frog bounty hunter named Gribbet, a scantilly clad girlfriend for Han named Gamine, and various other things. It was endearing, in a retro kind of way.

The original Marvel comics, much less so. They were just kind of bizarre.

My problem with the Eu (once it became known as that) is just how humorless everything is (much like the prequels) Even in Dark Empire, there's some attempts at humor. But, NOOOO! Like most comics in the last ten years, grim, grim, GRIM, stuff.

Chewie never should have died, and there should never have existed a panel where a woman explodes from a force-bomb.

EDIT: For the record, I don't have anything against character death (Heck, in my EP 7 outline Lando dies in the first 20 minutes), but there's a certain way to do it, and I don't think they did it right.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

It's official. RT @KnightsArchive BREAKING: LucasBooks has confirmed to us that The Essential Characters has been cancelled. #StarWars #SWEU

Is the EU dead?

Maybe they figure since the EU's gonna get at least a partial reboot with the release of Episode VII, it'd be a waste of money to print a book showcasing a host of characters who'll be rendered non-canon in the near future.

If you think the main Marvel comics were bizarre*, you should see the stories Alan Moore wrote for Marvel UK.

*Bizarre comics are awesome, so don't knock 'em!

I've seen some of them. Pretty weird.

I won't deny that some bizarre comics are good, but for licensed products I find it less forgivable. I enjoy the early Star Trek Gold Key comics, so I have experience with weird stuff.

I prefer his work with the comic strip, though. He'd grounded himself a lot more by then.

i used to feel that way, but i really enjoy those pre empire stories.

In the early days, I don't think Marvel had too many directives from Lucasfilm save for not treading on ESB's potential storylines, or setting off George's Leporiphobia. ;)

The only Marvel comics I have an issue with are the post-ROTJ issues. The whole "the Empire fell in a day" aspect aside, the writers just seemed to have been running out of ideas for good stories to tell.

They may have actually had more limits on what they could do at that point. I don't think anyone besides George knew how far off new films really were.

I used to some what ignore them but the prequel-isms in the books post 1999. I read Survivor's Quest again recently.  Its not a terribly good effort on Zahn's part to begin with, but the prequelisms which i must have missed last read through, i now really despise.

The wost part that Yoda taught Luke that Jedi were forbidden to love during his training on Dabobah.  Nowhere in the movie.  Zahn trying to harmonize the non canon sequel Eu storyline with the prequel film, its rubbish.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

Before tossing Mr. Zahn out the airlock, we should ask how much leeway does any writer really have with the EU? Doesn't Lucasfilm call the shots?

As far as I know, nothing in the EU is to contradict what's been established in the movies. That doesn't indicate to me that the writers have to include prequelisms where/when they aren't necessary.

Author

That doesn't preclude an editor inserting them after a writer has turned in his final draft though.
