If a person goes without food for long enough,  he/she will die.  That is a fact.

LOL, not saying someone can go indefinitely without food. Not sure what is being debated here, if anything at all. Yeah, of course they'll die if they go long enough without it, but forty days isn't always it (at least not in every case). The amount of time someone can go without food depends on the person and their body weight (my friend who did this forty day thing once a year was a big guy) and other health conditions and factors.

All I can say is that I'll bet he ate good on Easter.  C3PX, I'm sorry if it sounded like I was trying to debate you.   I didn't mean to come off that way.  Btw,  what was your friend doing for a living at this time?  I would think it would be very difficult to keep working while fasting for so long.   Where would you get the energy for it?

He was more or less an artist, so no, he didn't work a typical 9 - 5 or anything like that. I went for a week without eating while working full time at a fairly active job, and I actually felt surprisingly energetic after the first few days had passed, but even a week was no small challenge. I personally couldn't imagine going for a full forty days.

I'm definitely not saying a forty day fast would be a good idea. It is actually extremely unhealthy. Upon not eating for such a long period of time your body not only begins to eat away at your fat, but also at your muscles. But it is possible to do.

C3PX- how much weight did your friend lose?  How much wait did you drop?

I am not sure how much weight my friend lost, but I am sure 40 days had to have made him drop quite a few pounds.

As for me not eating for a week, it has been a few years back, but I actually don't remember it effecting me a whole lot. I think I remember dropping a few pounds, but putting it back on really quickly.

In college I once went 6 days fasting. (to be fair, I had a glass of apple juice each morning to placate my girlfriend who thought I'd die).

It had occured to me that I had never been hungry in my life. Maybe a bit peckish, but never really hungry.

After a few days, the gnawing hunger transformed into a kind of quiet listlessness.

I was aiming for a week, but only made it 6 1/2 days because there was a fire drill and I was night security, and no way was I marching around the dorms all night with a flashlight without some caffiene and sugar.

It wasn't a spiritual thing, and i didn't have any kind of fasting-manifesto worked out, but it changed my worldview a bit.

If I skip breakfast, I no longer say, "man I'm hungry" when lunch rolls around four hours later.

(I think I lost a few pounds, but a Nurse firend told me that when fasting, the body shuts down non-essential stuff, so you burn less calories)

given up the sweets (I'm a sugeraddict)

Years ago the Doctor gave me instructions to stop drinking Tea due to my erratic heart beat, but I am back on it for lent with the plan of only having 1 spoon of sugar in it and by the time lent is over to have reduced it down to a few grains of sugar hopeing to wean myself off the stuff...

wish me luck, (I'm gonna need it)

Good luck, Babar.

I am a sugar addict too, but I have never been the type to pour the stuff into my coffee or tea. What is the point in drinking something if you are just going to try to cover up the flavor? I think both tea and coffee each have a wonderful taste of their own.

I have finally decided what I am going to give up for Lent!

I am going to give up,

-soda/pop/soft drinks

-watching televised sports

-and anime

It is going to be a tough forty days, but I think I can handle it...

but C3PX,  I thought you weren't didn't like sports?   Also, you don't seem to be the anime type.

Maybe I'll give up my membership in the W. Bush fan club for Lent.

AHA! I got it. Facebook. I've been meaning to get rid of it, but I need some sort of motivation - which, I never have enough of. So why not give it a shot? Who knows, maybe I'll break the addiction and leave it alone after too.

Maybe you can take up guns for Lent?

And I don't suppose a Texan Police Officer should give up guns while he's on the job... :(

but I thought the point of lent was to give something up, not take up something.

good point.   But he could give them up while he's off duty ;)

I think you can also take on a new good habbit for Lent, but I'm not sure.  Perhaps going to the Gym is the positive way of stating "Stop Avoiding the Gym."

So, you can stop being a gun hating pacifist for Lent.  There- now you're giving something up.
