so instead of saying "now its REALLY the last time" they are instead saying "this is a limited release."

I can't find the links but I remember several of those way too many articles back in august of '06 (or thereabouts) stating "this will be the only time the original versions are released on dvd." Sure, that leaves high definition releases totally open to possibility assuming that they're even telling the truth in the first place, but LFL is being explicit here.

Yeah, but did any of us really take that seriousy back then? Back then it seemed more of a "the films are back in print, get them while you can before they disappear!"

I DID take GL seriously when the "one last time" campaign was rolled out, I guess because I'd heard that the SEs were coming in a couple of years. I bought the Faces VHS tapes back in '95, but of course at that time I really didn't know what to expect from the SEs as they weren't really giving out a whole lot of info. I'd assumed that most of it was going to be just digital clean-up of FX, but I also heard rumors about a digital Jabba being put somewhere (to replace the original Jabba in ROTJ, I assumed). That gave me a bad feeling about what was to come.

When I finally saw the SEs in '97, I panicked and got the LDs too.

I remember the "one last time" campaign and at first this didn't worry me because it was around the time that DVd was starting to take off so i just thought that they'll release the SE on home video the Lucasfilm will switch to DVD and release both versions. God how wrong was i? If they had kept the SE as exactly that , a Special Edition, then i would have been happy. But not with the way that the SE is the only version we are ever allowed to see on the big screen or in decent quality on DVD. I have the GOUT and i have only ever watched the first few minutes of ANH before i felt like smashing them with a hammer. They look so bad on my LCD TV ad don't get me started on the anamorphic issue.

In my opinion the SE should have been more about enhancing the FX work and yes maybe adding new scenes in but not changing the storyline of characters. Having Greedo shoot first was one of the biggest mistakes they could have done. What the hell was GL thinking? I also think that If we had decent versions of both the SE and OUT available and that GL hadn't decided that the SE was the only version of the OT that we can have at today's quality standards then i doubt there would be so many SE haters as that is what we would all see it as and nothing more.

Hell i love the SE, apart from a few things, but i also love the OUT. Hopefully now that we are starting to see the theatrical versions of various films restored and made available that George will wake up from his little LucasWorld and see that he is destroying a major part of cinematic history by denying the OUT even exists. Saying that the original negative was destroyed while making the SE and that it is impossible to do a high quality transfer is pure BS. I'm sure i read somewhere that they had to use footage from someone's (I think it was Kurtz) private copy because the negative was too deteriorated in places so why can't they just use that to restore the OUT elements? It would be much work as it would only require those shots to be done, no no huge buck spent.

But after saying all this i do recon we will get the OUT in high quality when the saga is released on whatever HD format Lucas decides to go with. Can you imagine the sales if he gave us the OUT & SE in HD? And lucas is all about making money at the end of the day so failing to take the opportunity to do this would be a huge marketing disaster ( or maybe this is what he has planned and releasing the OUT in such crappy quality on DVD will make people go out and Buy HD players and rush to buy these sets . Hmmm)

The real sad thing is that in 1997 none of us knew how tight Lucas' grip is on the entire film industry. Oh well, he have to swallow our losses and accept the inevitable...

Adywan has a point. The exact same thing happened with Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The last time it was released on vhs was '98 (I think) and it was the latest '98 revision. This was then the only version released on dvd back in 2001 and has been the only version available on dvd ever since. The forthcoming dvd will have all the versions. Whatya say we get onto writing a new petition as soon as that comes out?

Adywan's post is absolutely correct. If Lucas would just see the error of what he is doing and release the originals in today's quality, it would probably douse many people's lashing on the SE. Also, it would be record breaking in sales all together. Yes, the 2006 release is an insult to fans. So bad that I did not even buy it. I refused to buy a rubbish product like that. Fang Zei, I agree. We should have a new petition. Lucas does know that we would all buy the OOT on a great transfer doesn't he? What a moron he is for the disrespect of the films and his fans.
